At the risk of stating the obvious, it's clear that no one over at TNK put a lot of effort into this anime. But considering the fact that their top anime is Highschool DxD one shouldn't be all too surprised by this fact.

goes in and explains these basic things about it's characters, and as a result investment in them becomes difficult. From a more meta perspective the reason is clear, of course. Because the writers need some sort of moral justification for the upcoming r*pe/torture scenes. But that's an out-of-universe explanation. There isn't really any in-universe explanation and that's a problem. It gives the viewer the feeling that the story was just an after-thought and that the sex-scenes is everything the creators cared about. Those priorities don't make for good anime, sure, they make for good hentai, but this anime clearly wants to at least pose as something more than fap-material.
Characters don't need to be deep, not all entertainment needs to be deep, but it should at least be entertaining. If i asked you to describe the MC of "kaiyari," what would you say? He's mean, he's angry, holds a grudge? He doesn't really have any notable traits that make for an entertaining viewing experince. He's just a blank slate with anger issues. What was his early life like before he became property of the princess? Did he have values, dreams goals? What were they? Does he have any funny or interesting quirks? If you saked me these questions about the MC of other fantasy-shows, even less "deep" ones like KonoSuba i could answer these questions. With Keyaru i can answer none. It seems like the protagonist was nothing more then an after-thought. This is bad, an anime is nothing wihtout a strong lead.
The anime also fails at basic world-building. How does magic work, why is the MC's magic so strong? What cheat has he discovered that allows him to do literally anything? No answers. There's a time-skip and after that the MC's powers are completely broken, what are the mechanics behind that? Even in some of the most generic shows such as "The Irregular at Magic High School," how magic functions is actually explained. It's not an after-thought and is as such way more engaging. This anime fails completely in this area as well. It is clear that everything except for the sex-scenes are a complete after-thought in this anime. I expect that kind of behaviour in hentai or pornos, not in a non-hentai anime from a major studio.
TL;DR:
This anime fails in basic character- and world-building, and as such i just can't take it seriously or be invested. As a result i don't see this show as "dark" or "too tough for normies" a dark show makes your stomach turn, it makes you feel bad. This show is too lazily written to do any of that for me. I guess it could work as fap-material for some people but it is certainly not a good show. Unless you're watching it with your d*ck in your hand you won't get any value at all out of it. You won't see me walking around pretending that this show is good or has anything going for it just so that i can "piss off the SJW's". I'm not that infantile.

[LIGHT SPOILERS]
Maybe, it's hard to tell what qualifies as a spoiler at this point.
Anyways, around season 2 of MHA i started getting the sneaking suspicion that this is not a good show but i couldn’t pinpoint why. I think i get it now. After sitting with this show for another 2 seasons i think i get it.
Is the hero-job pointless?
No seriously. As i watch the backstories of the various villains in the show i see that none of them just randomly became villains. The usual trend is that society failed them some place along the way and this drove them towards crime.

All heroes talk about their goal being creating peace in society. But if society is producing these criminals doesn't that mean that the only way to bring peace is by changing society so that it no longer does so? That isn’t what heroes do. The job of the heroes isn’t to change the way society is structured so that society no longer produces criminals, their job is to stop criminals in the act and minimise that damage that they do. Changing the way society is structured is the job that politicians among many others do.
The heroes can stop all the criminals they want but at the end of the day society will always produce another one. Thus, the heroes will never achieve their goal of bringing peace to the world. Their efforts are completely pointless. This pointlessness is a problem as it disincentives me too root for the heroes knowing that what they do will never help them achieve the goal they’ve set out for themselves. Don’t get me wrong, minimizing damage is a valuable job, but it’s not the job the heroes proclaim to be doing therefore i can’t help not feeling invested.
A show on its last legs:
Additionally it’s just clear that this show is on it’s last leg. Our new top hero, the symbol of “peace” is Todoroki’s abusive dad. Yup, that’s the best the heroes have to offer us. But it’s fine! All his past transgressions are forgiven because he defeated a nomu! Seriously, i’ve never seen something more forced than that pathetic attempt at making Endeavour the new symbol of peace. Also, since we’ve already established that the heroes will never bring about peace, the moniker “symbol of peace” just comes off as a cruel joke.
There are of course more basic critiques of the show, like how the writers don’t even bother giving any characters except the villains elaborate motivations for their actions anymore thus making empathizing with the heroes imopssible. Or how the personalities of the entire main cast has completely stagnated. Or maybe how every big fight at this point follows a predictable formula. Here’s the formula:
Hero and villain fight evenly, hero struggles and almost loses, hero remembers some random shit and gets a power up for no reason at the last moment, hero defeats the villain in a big explosion whilst screaming a corny catchphrase at the top of their lungs.
These are all critiques you’ve probably heard already though so there’s no point in me going into detail on them. The point is that this is a very bad and sloppily executed superhero show. The only character that i like at this point is hero-killer Stain (maybe), it’s not supposed to be that way.

This is ecchi done right ladies and gentlemen. Although it could just as well be considered softcore hentai (some of the sex-scenes get really “raunchy” sometimes).
[LIGHT SPOILERS]
The story:
There really is none, just a bunch of dudes (and people with potentially different gender-identities) walking around reviewing interspecies brothels. And in this instance that is totally fine. The characters are sufficiently entertaining and they always get into ridiculous/hilarious situations, therefore there doesn’t really need to be a story or narrative present.
A true melting-pot:

any though, and that isn’t surprising. This show is actually really inclusive and quite progressive. The main characters live in a world where multiple species with different cultures live together in peace, sexwork is legal, sexworkers aren’t looked down upon, sexworkers actually have safe work-environments with respectful customers and one of the main characters is effectively intersex. The angel Crimvael to be specific. This show isn’t an sjw’s worst nightmare, it’s an sjw’s wet dream, and i love too see it. The way this show casually includes people of different species and genderidentities within the main cast whilst also painting sexworkers as independent and intelligent people actually makes this show extremely progressive and most importantly, extremely wholesome.
In conclusion:
This is just a silly anime about a group of adventurers reviewing brothels, but they are all so entertaining that this lack of an overarching narrative is totally fine. There are always a bunch of silly moments and the sex-scenes are all unique due to all the different species inhabiting them. Furthermore, the show is very wholesome and dare i say, progressive, due to the positive manner in which it displays sexworkers and people of different genderidentities. All around a funny, wholesome and sexy show. If you like ecchi that borders on hentai or just a wholesome and fun show, this is the one for you.

Finally, some decent shounen ai. A lot of anime and/or manga with gay men in the lead roles just turns into shitty, often rapey fan-service for women. It's not very fun to look at and good writing or entertaining characters are often sacrificed in the name of fan-service. This one is different.
-Characters
This manga has a light tone with a lot of focus on comedy. The characters are simple but serve their purpose (comedy) and most importantly, the characters aren't just vehicles for fap-material, they are written as actual human-beings. inner dialogue he has going on inside his head is always fun to read through.
-The main relationship
This isn't one of those gay mangas where one man is super effeminate and submissive whilst the other one is dominating and rapey either. Know why? Because (spoiler alert), actual romantic relationships don't work like that. Nope, instead the power-dynamics aren't really skewed in anyone favor and the relationship actually develops slowly over time.
-The rest of the cast
There is actually a cast outside of the main duo, yup. Because despite what shounen ai or yaoi writers would have you believe, world building and supporting roles are actually important. One big issue with gay manga/anime is that it usually only appeals to women or gay men. This is because gay manga/anime is rarely anything more than glorified softcore porn. Things like fun characters or good story aren't as important as delivering fan-service. This manga does not have that problem because the creator did not just want to make some shitty fap-material, they wanted to make an actually readable piece of art. And I'm pleased to announce that they succeeded.

[Spoiler Warning]
This is an anime about a mother and a son who venture into an isekai world together in one of the most uninspired and bad isekai-shows to date. There are zero intriguing characters and worldbuilding is inexistent. The show looks like trash and i don’t remember any of the music.
Shitty mom-jokes:

starts crying whenever he complains about the fact that she essentially kidnapped him. It turns out in episode two that the entire isekai world is rigged in the mothers favor, she has complete dominion over her son and the company that created the fantasy game is in on it. I guess this is supposed to be super funny, but it isn't. “Haha, look it the son trying too venture off on his own just for the mom to use her magical powers to track him down.” or “Haha, look at the mom treating anyone spending more time with her son then she does as an enemy” is not funny. The joke doesn’t land. I’m not saying there is no way to make obsessive parents entertaining. There might be, this just isn’t it. I've never found enjoyment in those types of jokes, making bad parenting funny is hard and this low-level anime shouldn't have tried to pull it off.
Mom-jokes aside:
This anime is so bad, the jokes are so sloppy and usually just some primitive form of slapstick. Funny characters or interesting worldbuilding is of course also inexistent. So even if i wanted to ignore the shitty mom-related jokes there are no other redeeming qualities either. It must be so easy to make bad animes when you can just hide behind the excuse that your anime is a parody or something.

Most harem-animes do nothing for me. The reason is obvious, i’ve seen them all. Even before i got a MAL account back when i was watching anime on the family computer, i was watching harem-animes. Despite this, 5-toubun made me feel, now i’ll admit it wasn’t much, but at least i felt something. What a pleasant surprise.
A decently characterized cast:
Tropes aren’t inherently bad, some animes embrace them and make them into strengths (Bakemonogatari for example). This anime succeeds to some degree and at least makes attempts. Characters are important in harem animes, especially the main girls. I can describe the characters-traits of 4 out

of 5 of the main girls. 2 of the 5 i can go more in-depth on. This cast is therefore strong enough for me to enjoy it. All the girls are distinct and at least 2 of them have depth beyond the tropes they fit into. It’s not some award-winning writing but it does it’s job and got me more invested than i usually am in harem and school-life shows. Some characters are obviously weaker, like the MC. His primary job is to function as a self insert for the viewer. He is very forgettable and couldn’t carry the show on his own in the same way a harem MC like Hachiman could. Overall though, the characters are good enough to keep me mildly emotionally invested. This is a rarity for me so this anime does a way better job then most harems.
What sets this harem-anime apart:
There is one aspect of harem-relationships that most writers shy away from exploring. Realistically, most harems should end in tragedy. If you have a harem with one boy and two or more girls, unless you’re polygamous, only one of the girls are gonna get the “happy ending”, the rest will have their hearts broken and leave with nothing. Writers dodge this in many ways, usually by making the MC completely oblivious to romantic advances or never letting harems reach their conclusions. They also often completely ignore the conflict that would ensue as multiple people are desperately fighting to gain the affection of the same person. This anime however puts on display more than most others, the conflicts and troubles that occur as 5 sisters are all trying to charm the same guy whilst simultaneously keeping their relationships with each other intact. The show also makes it clear that this harem has a conclusion and doesn’t shy away from that fact. In the show we repeatedly get visions of the future that shows the MC getting married to one of the 5 girls. The visions never shows which one of the girls but it is nonetheless made clear that this harem has a definitive end. The main cast of this show actually struggled on occasion and their harem-relationship sometimes put them in distress or tough spots which in turn made characters in the show actually develop and evolve. This in turn made me more invested in them.
Concluding:
I understand that the bar is really low when i’m praising a show for simply including some basic character development or giving the main cast some basic personalities and personality-traits. Some basic realism and common sense shouldn’t be enough to set a harem-anime apart from the rest but sadly, in accordance with most harem-anime today, it is. I actually became a bit invested in this anime and found that i somewhat enjoyed the main cast and the story. This anime isn’t great but compared to most harem i’ve seen, above average. If that’s what you’re looking for you’re in the right place.

Wooooow......Wooooooooooow. This is bad. This is real bad.
Problem 1, The Gary Stu:
Usually when you write a story there are certain pitfalls you want to avoid. One of them is the Mary Sue, alternatively called Gary Stu for males. A gary Stu is a character that doesn't have any flaws and is really strong or talented at whatever you have to be talented in in their specific story in order to be successful. at stake, no tension is ever built up and nothing dramatic that is exciting to watch can ever happen.
This is actually quite an easy pitfall to avoid and is basically character writing 101: just make your character not be good at absolutely everything. This story absolutely ignores that and makes our dear MC super OP. He's a genius magician whos just naturally talented at magic, in the world he lives in magic is power and someone who is good at magic can become anything they want in life, he's also good looking and charms 2 women simultaneously in the first episode by beating up a bunch of generic bad guys (nice another generic harem isekai). He's also super positive, loved by everyone and has no mental issues or trauma despite literally being ran over and killed in his past life. TL;DR? He's a Gary Stu whos good at everything and has never struggled in his entire life. Seriously, this is such an easy thing to avoid even, One Punch Man, a dude who can literally one-shot anything, isn't a Gary Stu!
Problem 2, Silver spoons:
There is wrong with wealthy characters. Bruce Wayne is wealthy and he is one of the most iconic superheroes of all time. Growing up with a silverspoon shoved up your *** can obviously make for interesting characters as well, however. When a life of wealth, social and economic, is combined with Gary Stu-ism you get what might probably be the most boring and unwatchable character in human history. That is exactly what the MC of this anime Shin Walford is. Not only is he naturally talented at everything, he was also raised by the lands greatest hero, his partner, the literal king of the country he lives in, a famous knight and others! This is absurd! All this of course results in Shin being the most boring, uninteresting and unwatchable MC of all time as he has 0 problems in life.
Supporting cast and setting are also trash:
We have a generic magic-school setting where student are ranked based on their capabilities as magicians (wow, never seen that before). We have two girls who are literally introduced as damsels in distress that shin (the MC) has too swoop in and save, one of them immediately falls in love with him. A Draco Malfoy type character that literally fills no other purpose then further showing how strong Shin is and setting up the villain slightly(not saying Malfoy is a bad character, i’m saying that the character filling the same role in this anime is bad).
Lastly, we have a villain. Man he's boring, so boring. You know what i hate? Villains who are evil just for the sake of it. No rhyme or reason, no philosophy guiding them, no event which molded them. I hate villains who are just evil for the sake of being evil. This is because there is nothing for me to relate to, no way for me to understand them or become invested.They're just there because the MC needs an antagonist. Also, this guy is not intimidating or anything in the least. He gets hurt by Shin (the MC) and struggles against him in their first encounter. He's unrelatable, uninteresting and intimidating at the same time.
Last words:
There’s nothing left to say, Shin just swoops in with his overpowered magic everywhere and succeeds at everything he tries, this is not fun too watch. If the MC and main story of a show is this bad then it doesn't matter what merits the rest of the show have to stand on, which are none, btw. This is just a generic and uninspired magic-school anime. There is no point in addressing specific plotpoints in the anime although there are many which further illustrate why this show is so bad. This is because the fundamental aspects of the show (characters, story and setting for example) all fail and are so mediocre and overdone that the show collapses on a foundational level. I’m not telling you too not enjoy mediocrity, blandness and bad writing as a guilty pleasure, just don’t praise it.

You know what annoys me? When edge-lords band together around an anime and start giving it unironical 7 out of 10’s or higher just because they saw 2 people on twitter who seemed offended. Here’s the what you need to know:
This anime is not “realistic” or “dark”, a more correct term would be “edgy”. For example all goblins are seemingly men, why? Because that makes it so that their only means of reproduction is raping human women. From any sort of realistic perspective, maybe an evolutionary standpoint, we can see that this doesn't make sense. But this anime isn’t interested in making sense, it’s interested

in edge.
The MC is about as interesting as a rock or a brick wall (actually, i take that back, rocks and brick walls can both be fascinating and interesting to look at). He has a generic edgy backstory and 90% of his dialogue consists of “ok”, “i see” or “goblins are bad, boohoo”. The main girl a naive idiot whose only purpose is to be a useless damsel in distress and annoy me. The elf girl is a naive brat, whose only purpose is to make the goblin slayer “go easy” on the goblins and give them needless moral consideration so that we can get more “dramatic” and “dark” (not really) situations. The rest of the cast are, well, i don’t know what they are, that’s how uninteresting they are.
This anime is mindless self-insert fanservice and isn’t trying to hide it. Fanservice can exist in forms other than boobs and cute girls, don’t let this anime fool you. Have fun with it, but please, rate it accordingly.

Ok, im mad. Almost all reviews for this anime are unironical 8 out of 10's or higher. Whatever, lets get into this review.
First of. The story, or lack thereof. There is no overall direction with it. It’s not going anywhere. It’s like the writers just wanted to show off cute girls and halfway through writing realized that they had to give the show some sort of substance. Any drama that is supposed to happen never carries any weight because it’s never built up and whatever villain that appears doesn't have any substantial motive. checklist that they must complete. The latest villain, some random mage literally tells the main characters exactly where to go. Kidnaps the newest girl that is too be added to the mc’s harem. And then the mc has too work his way up a bunch of floors too finally reach the evil guys’ chamber. That is such a stereotypical damsel in distress type story that i don’t even know what's going on. All they need now is a tower and a dragon.
The characters...
It’s ok to just have a slice of life story that doesn't go anywhere but if you’re going to do that, focus on the characters. Develop them. In slice of life the characters and how they behave in their daily life is supposed to be what carries the show. Konosuba shined in this very way. This show does not. Zena for example is so boring, bland and she actually has no defining character traits. She's just a polite girl who fell in love with our main because the plot told her too. At least the demihumans bring a little shred of comedy (even if i have seen all these types of jokes before). But that is all they are there for and since the comedy isn’t anything new it gets old after a while. So the show doesn't go a more Konosuba character driven route or a more serious story driven route and as such completely falls apart. Don’t halfass two things, tryhard one.
Lastly… the mc. Wow, what a disappointment. I can’t even begin to express how much seeing his character turn into nothing hurt me. He started off strong, you see most anime mc’s are teens. Usually around 15. So when i heard that this guy was going to be in his 30’s i got hyped. I hoped this was going to bring some mature thinking too the show. I thought he, being 30 would have developed some type of character. A personality. Him being loved by a bunch of kids around the age of 15 was certainly going to be interesting. How were they gonna handle that. They didn’t. The mc in this show is painfully bland with no defining personality traits whatsoever and the fact that he's an adult isn’t adressed or ever even touched on. Not explored. In fact as icing on the cake they put him back into his 15 year old body when he gets teleported into the fantasy world. It is as if they wanted too really let the viewers know that this anime wasn’t going to do anything different. Of course he’s your stereotypical, nice guy, emotionless, always smiling, plain, bland, harem mc that you’ve seen before thousands of times if you actually watch anime.
Oh and btw, the animation sucks. Don’t even make me touch on the lack luster fight-scenes that more resemble still panning shots (i'm referring too later fight-scenes as the first one in episode 1 actually had actual animation and carried a little weight). Oh and btw, the show started strongly. The mc starts off with nothing in a world that he knows nothing about. He’s low leveled and we actually get to see him struggle and hurt. Legitimate emotions are being brought out here and thats why im so mad that the show then turned into what it turned into. Because it started off really down to earth with the mc pulling all-nighters at his office and then actually struggling in the fantasy world if even only for like 10 minutes of episode 1. But then the mc of course reaches the max level in one fight by literally wiping out an entire army with meteors. Yeah, f’ck this show.

Ok, im going to give you the quick rundown.
The biggest problem with this anime is the way it executes a plot that is meant to be filled with dread and sadness. This is a survival anime where a bunch of peole go aginst eachother for survival more or less.
In survival animes the writers are supposed to make you feel for the characters so that when theirs lives are at stake you really get nervous. The characters are supposed to have motives and personalities that are at least a little complex and unique.
That way when they get pitted against each other the battle

that occurs, no matter physical or mindgames get interesting.
This anime fails at all of that and just ends up becoming and edgy, fake-deep, dissapointment.
