Hello. I was guided here by one of your posts on AnimeSuki that detailed your scoring system (2011-ish) because I was:
a) Looking for opinions on MAL's scoring system
b) Looking for someone who rates things fairly low, because generally they've seen a lot of shows

I'm kind of disappointed that I've seen all the anime on your list aside from three that I don't have any inclination to watch, but I did read your Spirited Away review, so something did come out of this.

Spirited Away Review Feedback

Spirited Away, to me at least, is a character-driven drama narrative. I view it largely as a surreal representation of how Chihiro felt when moving to a new town. This is why it's easy for character motivations to change seemingly at the drop of the hat: Chihiro was either glorifying or condemning certain characters, which exaggerated their actions in different ways. Her parents are turned into pigs, which I feel is symbolic of how Chihiro feels about them--she can't properly communicate with or rely on them for help, and she even views them as pigs. She's lost in a confusing world she knows nothing about and is forced to turn the gears of a bathhouse (which I thought was symbolic of her mind) to survive. She feels lost and alone, but there are people there who extend kindness to her.

No-Face starts off as a character with an overly weak personality, but as he consumes more and more food, he starts to both grow in size (ego) and attempts to consume more and more the more he grows (hunger for/pursuit of happiness, but is never filled up). You see him throw up all the things he's consumed as he chases after Chihiro who had just given him a medicinal herb (?), and his personality reverts back to the weak-minded one he had previously. The medicinal herb is clearly symbolic of No-Face's cleansing; his lack of self-control results in him acting on all of his urges (both good and bad). In Freudian terms, it's like acting solely on your id with no regard for your ego or super-ego.

Spirited Away is chock-full of symbolism (which I won't go into great detail mentioning, as I don't want to go on for too long), and that's why I liked it so much. Character actions that seemingly don't make sense likely will when shone in a certain light.

I simply wanted to present a new perspective that you maybe haven't heard before. This doesn't mean that your criticism isn't perfectly valid, because it is. I just don't agree with it.

PS.: I also liked angel beats ;)

No problem. I often get the same type of replies .. i think it only helps us, reviwers, improving ourselves.

About the kid argument .. i only said that to justify the characters action and not the mistakes that the movie does. But you are right, since Yubaba wanted to kill him xD. Anyway it's not perfect i'm a aware of that but i also know that it's not bad either ;)

About your review of Spirited away .. i think you are the one who messed up everything..

You want to blame the movie because personally you didn´t liked it, so you make up excuses and think people will agree with them.

Like ... according to your list, the rate that you gave is unfair. Well this is a kids movie .. so ofc Yubaba's sister forgave Haku for stealing her thing. She saw that he was regretted about his mistake.

Then you say that Chihiro at the beginning doesn´t know who their parents were ... well let me tell you, that was a nightmare remember?

You gave 7/10 to Angel Beats .. according with your excuses to blame Spirited away, Angel beats for you would be a 1/10. Or you just ignored the gigantic plot hole in the end to give the rate that you wanted ?

I see. I guess I'll eventually give the manga a look. It's still ongoing right?

Also, Rei or Yuki? :3

Sup. Yea, I know you from AS, mostly from the Haruhi forums.

Interesting choice of favorite characters. :3 Also, how is the Eva manga?
It’s time to ditch the text file.
