SMASH THE CONTROL MACHINE

SMASH THE CONTROL MACHINE

Numbers are meaningless. The way we rate anime is wrong. The way we review anime is wrong. You won't find numbers in my list, just words that explain my thoughts while reading or after finishing a series. This is true for both anime and manga lists. Numbers are only a guide if you know what my number means and too many people have extensive write-ups of their evaluation of numbers, some crunch numbers so hard with decimals to create "the perfect score", but who is to say that there's a numerical difference between Neon Genesis Evangelion and Fullmetal Alchemist? Use your words, not your numbers, and pick those words wisely.

Let's also stop fooling ourselves that anime is to be free of thought. Explore the topics each piece presents. Like conservationism in Nausicaä, oppression in Attack on Titan, racism in One Piece, and the exhaustive list that can keep going. People write fiction from a place of reality, to speak about our world, to criticize and inform. Don't reject that education.

Villains with a Purpose

Villains to me are more interesting than heroes, especially when you can't argue with them, and when they blur the line between evil and good acts.

Heroes that Matter

A good hero can recognize the value in evil, and that purity doesn't make right. They question authority and don't blindly do "good" things because in the end, the hero might be perceived as a villain by more than just the "evil" side.

Moments that Teach

Some shows have extremely well taught lessons that everyone should pay attention to in an effort to learn more about the world around them. This isn't necessarily simple lessons like friendship, but deeper ones about life, understanding and consequence.

I disagree almost completely with your review of Dr. Stone. That being said, the reason I'm writing here is not because I intend to argue with you about the manga. Instead, I want to tell you that you might want to return to the manga and update your review somewhat because Tsukasa has been explored more, and " They made 100 Stories, why not 101 where one is just a brief history of the past." while I don't know if they made a story about the past world, they have made a story about one important technology back then in the story about "Speaker the bee" in chapter 59, which ultimately results in a very touching moment for not just Senkuu, but everyone in the village.

I appreciate your excellent review on Dr. Stone. It tackled a lot of the strengths and weaknesses of the manga but in my opinion 4 was too harsh of a rating to give. The manga had numerous plotholes such as the 100 stories remaining as is despite the time skip of 3700 years to the setting of the current story or Byakuya hoping that the 100th story would be passed to Senku. In my opinion, these plotholes are part of the shonen element of shonen manga and they add to the overall plot and setting just like how JoJo stays awesome despite all of the details that Araki forgot. I suggest that you update your review on Dr Stone(if you haven't dropped it yet) as it was mainly focused on the Senku vs Tsukasa rivalry which ended quite a while ago.

I get you; must be hard finding time to rewatch the first season and then proceed to binge the 2nd lol

I agree, I started reading this because I liked the premise and knew an anime was coming. I hope the anime is able to polish up some of the dirt in the early chapters and make the rest of it feel more refined. There is an amazing story and premise in there somewhere.

(Yes I know this is a week late reply, but thank you again nonetheless)

I really liked your review of Dr. Stone. While I found myself liking the series up to the point of your review (Chapter 58) I found you to be fair and balanced with your criticism. It really made me think about my overall feelings towards the manga without making me feel shitty for enjoying it. Keep up the good work.

Oh wow, thank you for the detailed explanation! I'm pretty used to heavy themes in all kinds of media, so I'm definitely intrigued - I'll have this on the backburner for sure, will get to it at some point in the future!
KentoCh Nov 11, 2018 3:11 PM
It really does, that's a very fair statement. On a separate note, I've seen that Neon Genesis is one of your favourite anime, and I've never got around to watching it... How much out of 10 would you recommend it and why? Just need an idea for what to watch and I feel like it's always been considered an anime 'classic'!

Thanks for accepting the FR! I think you have a really good selection of favourites and agree with your statements on anime critique c:
