Pokemon Movie 08: Mew to Hadou no Yuusha Lucario

Onmyou Taisenki and Lucario of the Mystery of Mew are both among the best of the best in the Monster Fighting genre of anime. If you enjoyed the deeper emotional conflicts about the bond between a human and their talking animal companion in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Onmyou Taisenki is a must watch. Over the course of 52 episodes this show develops an unbreakable bond between its talking animal (the white tiger Kogenta) and his human friend Riku. Onmyou Taisenki is one of the best Pokemon/Digimon style anime out there because its characters are some of the deepest and most likable in its genre, and it does a wonderful job exploring their relationship.

The creator of the Ancient Magus Bride stated in Volume 1 of her manga that Brigadoon was an influence on her. And this should be clear just by looking at the shows. Both are about a girl with no parents who experiences tragedy in their lives, while forming a bond with a powerful nonhuman male creature that protects them. Both are about the love between the girl and her protector and appear to be shojou "girl's shows" at first but actually feature violent and bloody battles, with human characters dying. Both shows are really unlike anything out there, and highly recommended.

Both shows are about a talking animal god with white fur forming a bond with a young and innocent human. Both series explore the relationship of this unlikely pair and how the presence of the animal god in the human's life helps them to make friends, overcome social anxiety. Both shows are immensely heartwarming and filled with kindhearted protagonists who do the best by everyone. Animal lovers will enjoy both shows for the many cute and fluffy animals the main character befriends.

If you enjoyed the darker, more disturbing episodes of Digimon Tamers, I highly recommend checking out Brigadoon. Both shows explore the bond of an innocent child and a non human creature from a different world, although Brigadoon tests the bond between the two perhaps even further than Digimon Tamers, with some truly disturbing and violent fights. Be warned, however, despite its cute art style, Brigadoon is anything but a kids show. The fights are intense, and humans and non human characters are killed on screen. If you enjoyed Digimon and want to see what it would be like in a brutally realistic setting, Brigadoon is a fantastic choice.
