A title created by the makers of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni and Rozen Maiden. A great blockbuster? Rather pseudo horror without tension. Unused potential and destroyed dream about worthy successor of Higurashi.
Hiroshi Kuzumi along with his sister and father took up residence in a small village called Jouga. The boy quickly befriend with his age-mates Isuzu and Kaname. He’s also popular with the rest of the class. The carefree atmosphere end, when Hiroshi noticed that some people from his surrounding suddenly disappears. The searches lead him and his friends to an old legend about local wolves and yearly festival named Hassaku. Moreover when
...
the night falls mysterious figures and a girl with scythe roams in the village. All these strange events seems to have some connection with Hiroshi.
Anime is based on a visual novel game which the script is written by Ryukishi07 who is the creator of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. The characters are designed by group Peach-Pit who drew Rozen Maiden and Shugo Chara. That information itself can entrance and prepare for something original and interesting. Unfortunately. Although I can’t judge the game I haven’t play, the animation of Ookami Kakushi is very disappointing.
All the expectations about this series were ruined and the hope about a worthy successor of Higurashi destroyed. Supposedly this title should be a horror but the creators messed up. We can ignore the fact that the characters looks very sweet, have cute big eyes and the colors are quite bright. For horrors we mostly expect tension. We wait and wait and wait for couple of episodes but it never appears. Since there’s no blood and no violence there should be some tension. There’s non. Even in the middle of the forest on night you can fall asleep watching this.
In the beginning Ookami Kakushi was somehow interesting. Mysterious figures with masks and their leader, a girl with scythe who looks like a white wolf. Moreover a mystical red moon. The atmosphere could attract some people. The performance was less well than expected. What it needed was some anxious sounds, unexpected twists to use the series potential. That was nothing like that. We have a riddle to solve: people are disappearing without a trace. However we don’t have this feeling to find out the truth. The secret of Jouga village don’t draw attention. In truth many people will solve this secret after few minutes. The rest will yawn instead of analyze every scene. All the mysterious vibe disappears after few minutes and solving the affair don’t give any satisfaction. Ookami Kakushi is simply boring although posses some action.
The characters don’t convince as well. They are bland, irritating or they don’t give them much attention. The main hero is not impressing. All the more as a protagonist of horror genre. He’s very fearful, avoiding troubles. In the role of a irritating character features Isuzu Tsumuhana who sticks to Hiroshi all the time. This type of character rather shows up in a harem anime than in a horror. Some interesting figures like the mysterious class president Nemuru Kushinada, or the doctor who wants to cure the villagers from a untypical illness didn’t get much attention or was introduced badly. Only two characters save this title. Shunichirou Sakaki who is interesting considering that he is the main antagonist with revenge and tragic past. This kind of thing were showed many times but with other characters which don’t have any motivation this is enough. The second person is Kaname Asagiri, Hiroshi’s classmate who is interested in occultism and novels. She has the role of a person that discovers the village secrets. She would definitely fit as a main hero.
The graphics offers good standard. You can recognize characters design same as the one from Rozen Maiden or Shugo Chara.and although this isn’t a style that you would expect from a horror. Sometimes the characters faces looks very flat though. The backgrounds don’t impress this much but the Jouga village can enchain from some point.
The music fit well and is interesting. You can’t call it groundbreaking but it manage to build up the atmosphere. We have some ominous and mysterious sound in the background. The best in it is the opening and ending, that shows how the anime should look like.
Basically some people can be dragged by the story and secrets of Ookami Kakushi, which aren’t so bad. Frankly the realization is bad done. The general idea, although commonplace, could have attract people who like mysteries. The authors couldn’t fit neither the secret or the characters personality. I don’t know to who recommend this title, maybe to fans of the game? In the end one sentence, that sums up this title: the good idea isn’t enough, the more important thing is how it will be introduced.

Another blockbuster from Kyoto Animation studio. Forming a music band that is a pretext to eat cakes and drink tea in nice atmosphere. Enjoyable and positive comedy with big accumulation of moe.
Kyoto Animation has at least two recognizable anime series. After Lucky Star and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya we have K-on. This time we don’t have loli student who talks about food or girl who search for aliens. This time the pretext is… a music band. Yes, Kyoto Animation knows how to attract millions of otaku. For K-on has so much fans as adventures of Haruhi or Konata and the amount of bayed
...
guitars during emission has increased markedly. We have another phenomenon.
Yui Hirasawa is a very lazy and irresolute person. She would like to join same club but she doesn’t have any interests or talents. She arrived to the light music club by accident. The activities of this club fits Yui , who don’t like to overwork herself. She meets tree other girls, who also arrived to the club by coincident. Four of them tries to improve their play on the instruments, but after a moment of practice they sit by the table with cakes and tea. Even when a new member appears it don’t change anything.
There are five members in the music band. First guitar is owned by Yui, a sweet and drowsy but cheerful girl. On second guitar plays Azusa, band’s mascot with large avidness and graceful appearance. The bassist is Mio, a quiet a and shy girl, who get scared vary easily. Percussionist Ritsu is a person with thousand ideas and energetic personality. The last member Mugi, who plays the keyboard is the sponsor of all cookies and tea. We also have four tangential heroines. There are non male characters.
Every character movement or sentence fits the fans exceptions. Girls have very cute lifestyle and are very adorable. Yui sleeps in weird places, eating lots of sweets and acting lazy. Azusa as the youngest member have role of bands mascot, obviously with cats ears. Mio blasts everyone with her shyness and scariness. Ritsu capers around all the time. Mugi is a motherly type from rich family.
Persons who want to watch K-on because of music will be disappointed. The club activities are constricted to eating cakes and drinking tea, rather than practicing on instruments. They won’t write many songs or perform concerts every evening. Don’t expect any masterpiece lyrics either. The band plays very light music with trivial contents, singing about rice for example. It can be classified as sweet pop-rock.
All music theme is contained in short conversations about this subject. Problem with hurting fingertips, controlling instrument or catching the right rhythm are one of those enjoyable additions. That can encourage many people to try some instrument practicing. Besides the portrayal of instruments is incredible. The guitars looks so much genuinely that we can recognize their analogue in real life. The character movement while playing and the instruments images from different angles are also fantastic. Though the concert scenes are limited because of time accomplishment.
What else can attract to K-on besides tons of moe? Namely positive energy which bright up this title. Smile don’t disappear even for a moment. Carefree life of our heroines and the atmosphere will build up everyone’s mood. Days in the club are passing slowly, which is very relaxing. K-on don’t kill with laugh. You can find more funny titles. The humor is light and accommodate in characters of club members. We don’t have stupid gags or punching in the head.
Graphics are done very well, as like as the instruments that I previously mentioned. Colors are lively and apparently sloppy drawn outlines are adding some dynamism in the animation. The facial expressions of characters are also very positive. Even though the club members are in high school they look very young, but it can’t be sead that is a typical loli look.
The background music is very positive and don’t disturb on with any frustrating themes. The opening song is characterized by excessive cuteness and portraits perfectly what K-on is. Quick guitar sounds and squeaky voices can get your mind mixed up. Songs that girls are playing in the anime can be counted on one hand. If sweet pop-rock songs happens to fit someone’s taste there are many albums that contains band’s music not featured in anime.
Someone that don’t want to watch anything with moe will doubtlessly avoid this anime. If it doesn’t bother, many spectators will fall in love with the characters and bias positively with this mellowed title. Regardless, I wouldn’t categorize K-on as a music title this much. The designation that fits it more is “About girls who spend their free time in a funny and enjoyable way”.

Vampires, witches, werewolves and other monsters. Rosario to Vampire proves that even with them you can make your own personal harem. Effortless romantic comedy with halloween atmosphere.
Aono Tsukune arrived to a new school. We have a default beginning but something seems fishy. Since Youkai Academy is a school for… monsters. Aono as a human is imperceptible because of an important rule of this academy- every student must be at his human form. Normal people at monster world aren’t welcome. In some horror like atmosphere everyone would run away but Tsukune found some reasons to stay. This reason is Moka Akashiya, a pink haired
...
vampire. The choice to stay may be apposite because to our hero’s harem have joined another three girls . If he can stay with this four girls, the fact that he can lose his life to some monster is nothing. Besides every girl gladly protects our defenseless human. Especially Moka, who is one of the most powerful monsters, a vampire.
Rosario to Vampire is a combination of shounen, harem and ecchi genre. We can add some mahou shoujo and horror too. The author doesn’t hide his inspiration for monsters. We have all kinds of them, from European legends and from Japanese myths. Main heroin is a vampire, later appears a werewolf , witch, succubus and other monsters. A fair group from horror story. Every of them tries to kill or seduce Tsukune.
The episodes are very schematic. To Tsukune and his group time flows by and than they get to know one of the students. This student unveils his true monster form. It tries to attack Tsukune, so Moka come to rescue and defeats the delinquent with her roundhouse kick. This repeats for almost all episodes. Rosario to Vampire is a typical ecchi genre. The difference is that the story is set in a monster school. From this assumptions we know that it will be funny, relaxing and without any obligations and if you don’t expect anything special it is. Though the humor isn’t too good.
As a typical harem anime every heroine tries to seduce the main hero. Everyone has their own episode to show their personalities but after that they don’t develop. Most of time we have our main pair Tsukune and Moka. That’s a big loss because the female characters are likeable and interesting. Sweet witch Yukari dressed in a characteristic hat and cape, succubus Kurumu that has an ability to seduce and a snow woman Mizore a quiet stalker. A well done small harem. But they don’t have too much screen time. Instead of that we have many episodic characters that appears only in one episode.
A big advantage of this title is the female vampire. When Moka unlocks her eponymous rosario she changes like a magical girl from cute and delicate person to a blood-thirsty invincible vampire. Plus she get some body increase for free. This second form of Moka will win everyone hearts. She’s sexy, almighty and has a good kick.
The animation is very accurate. We have a lot of deep colors. The female monsters have pink, violet and blue hair. The background is very colorful too. We have a genial surrounding atmosphere. Graveyards, crosses, pumpkins. Maybe they aren’t horror like but we can say that there is Halloween Day all the time in Youkai Academy. Mokas transformation is also good looking. It’s similar too magical girl transformation but we have domination of bats. Opening and ending singed by Nana Mizuki show two sites of this title- harem and monster fights.
Manga and anime of Rosario to Vampire are different. First of all the plot in the anime don’t develop at all. We mostly have the harem site here. In the manga Tsukune became involve in various organizations and mysterious intrigues. The atmosphere is more serious and dramatic. The anime producers didn’t want to make anything beside a typical ecchi. If you want some harem in a different convention watch the anime. If you want some harem with intrigues and fights read the manga.

Interesting and dark conception in eroge adaptation. It was suppose to be bloody and mysterious but was shabby and schematic. Anime with wasted potential.
Satsuki Kakeru lost his sister five years ego. She was his only family. Up till then the stepparents of Yuki Minase, his childhood friend took care of him. And then one day, when Kakeru and Yuki were returning from school, the moon turned red. They arrived to unknown alternative world, full of monsters and no humans. Presently they returned to their own world but they were aware this trip can repeat. When they arrive to the world with red moon again,
...
they meet beings called Black Knights, that want to kill everyone who can travel to other worlds. Yuki and Kakeru along with three other school friends tries to protect themselves from attacks of mysterious beings.
And again we have an adaptation of eroge. The game “11Eyes” is a visual novel with some gore and sex scenes. The anime isn’t that typical eroge adaptation. We don’t have panties on half of screen. Sometimes pantyshots are shown in unsuitable moments, even in serious moments but it isn’t obtrusive that much. Concerning underwear scenes, there are fanservice situations but they are also important to the whole plot. They develop characters in some way.
First episodes are really schematic. Teenagers spend their free time in school, try to find some information about the other world. Then the red moon appears and they must fight some monsters and defeat Black Knights. This formula repeat over and over and may be boring for a lot of people.
All the time we have many uncertainties. This can attract some people. End includes some unexpected twists. Threads that were accepted at first sight are not that obvious. The puzzle which includes questions “Who is the girl in the crystal and why teenagers must safe her?” and “Why do Dark Knights wants to kill the children?” Only this threads are interesting. The rest is quite boring.
The story itself isn’t well adapt. The conception is quite interesting: girl from mage family, who uses five legendary katanas; assassin with attractive skills. All this characters with supernatural powers, little girl trapped in the crystal, Dark Knights with quaint design. This could go well. But the authors went wrong somewhere. There are many logic errors and shabby dialogs. The interesting conception was wasted. Instead of that we have teenager who stray over the place with no reason.
Everyone have some kind of supernatural skills, that helps them to fight the Dark Knights. Characters appears to be interesting at some point but the story doesn’t gave them opportunity to develop. Everything goes so fast, that the advantages can’t be notice. As if the authors want to accommodate everything that was in the game. Characters suddenly appears from nowhere, relocate to another place and we don’t even know when it occur.
The character design are similar to that in the game. Pretty manga like faces doesn’t disturb the dark and brutal scenes. The backgrounds are very simple, but the profiles looks detailed. Apparently the anime is more censored compared to game, with erotic scenes as well as bloody moments.
The music is well selected. When the red moon appears the chorus start to sing and when it’s time for a fight we have faster piece. There are moments with horror like themes but their goal is not to scare but to emphasize the atmosphere . Opening and ending songs are also climatic.
Regardless “11Eyes” is another wasted potential. It was suppose to be dark and bloody, with little bit mature erotic scenes. Somewhere the authors lost all ideas and it didn’t go well. Well done action anime, too lofty treated, that lead to shabby show. Sometimes it were original and interesting, sometimes boring and trivial.

Everyone once asked himself this question: ” How do the afterlife looks like?” What if the purgatory would be some sort of school? Human tragedies and confrontation with all your life. Everything with a little bit of comedy and a lot of action.
Yuzuru Otonashi awakes in the middle of night in front of unknown school building. Moments after he noticed, that he lost his memories. The first person he meets is Yuri Nakamura, who aims with a sniper for a silver haired girl. Otonashi is more confused when he hears, that he is dead and this place is some sort of purgatory. At
...
the beginning the boy doesn’t want to believe in it. He changes his option, when the silver haired girl pierces his heart with a blade, leaving him in the hospital, not wounded. After awakening Otonashi doesn’t know what to do and with lack of idea he joins Yuri’s crew. She created a school squad, called SSS, that stands against God. According to Yuri, everyone who will fulfill his dreams and obey school rules will disappear. Their enemy happens to be the silver haired girl, called Angel.
The authors of this show exactly know what the spectators want. They know what attract people this days. We got original foundations, human problems and at the same time we are prepared for teenagers with school uniforms, carrying guns, defending themselves from immortal enemy. We got blood, we got humor, there’s even a rock band. It doesn’t matter if the authors placed all this things just to entertain more people or if they want to create something original. The fact is that Angel Beats is a addictive and well done anime. There is another important argument: a person in charge is Jun Maeda, who is responsible for Air, Clannad and Kanon.
The plot of this anime involves student of the nether world, who must realize their sense of existence and past life. When accepting themselves and their problems, they disappear. The director build the story evenly, so that this kind of plot isn’t schematic or boring. Even if the episode is about a particular character, the other protagonists are involved. Some of the characters has dramatic past, but everyone has a comedy characteristics.
Although Yuri’s squad stand up against divine opponent, this position don’t involve any religious contents. We don’t have any philosophical talk. There is no questioning the existence of human race or the role of God. The characters wrestles with their personal problems. Their worries aren’t shallow, they don’t involve metaphors. They are just humanly.
Although we have school uniforms, this title can’t be called typical school anime. The students don’t even attend to lessons. Instead of that they devise new missions, that are similar to military troops tasks. SSS always have interesting weapons. They try to find some information about the nether world. As we can see finding the truth appears in the strange missions ordered by Yurippe, which really are parodies of military actions.
The lieder Yuri is a dominating type of character. She is determined in fighting, ordering around and always surrounded by her crew. On the other hand Tenshi- the silver hair girl and SSS enemy is her opposition. She is quiet, without emotions and always walks alone. Otonashi is the main hero. We gather information and observe the situations from his point of view. Of course there are a lot more interesting characters.
The biggest disadvantage of this anime is too small number of episodes. There are about twenty characters but we can see stories only of six students. It is sad not to know more information about your favorite character in the series. There isn’t much room for everyone. Many viewers must be satisfied by tangential role of their favorite characters. Mostly they are shown only in a comic way.
Angel Beats is an ideal balance of drama, comedy and action. It is not too much or too few space for this aspects. During the fights, character movements are very smooth and fast. Most of the students own a weapon, SSS have all arsenal to their disposition. Sometimes it looks silly when teenagers with school uniform are walking with handguns, rifles and even a bazooka. The target is the school president, a immortal girl with programmed special skills.
This title has specific animation. Glary and pastel colors are separate with thin outlines. Moreover the light effects are fabulous. They fit to a sunny hot day perfectly. Thanks to that, the profiles looks very good and they don’t need much details. Shading and precision do the job. School and other areas look likewise good. You can admire to every frame.
The music fits to every situation. It can amuse and thrill. It is worth to recall about the songs of Girls Death Monsters, a rock band which plays concerts in the school grounds. They play some good music and are important to whole plot. The opening song is singed by Lia, a vocalist which is connected to Jun Maeda’s anime.
Great idea, story, art and music. Title for cry and for laugh. An anime that will attract almost everyone.
