Mangaby MyAnimeList

Shoujo manga magazines typically feature stories with female leads: the character whose perspective and inner thoughts primarily narrate the story to the audience.

The manga collected in this stack are original works serialized in these same shoujo magazines, but instead feature a male leading character. Story plots can fall into any genre and vary widely, including Romance, Adventure, Horror, or Comedy.

Please note Boys Love (BL) stories and male casts with heavy BL subtext are excluded from this stack. Manga serialized in josei magazines are also excluded as there are specific publications which have a higher tendency to feature only male characters.

Mangaby Weebookey

A list of manga with the most realistic artwork I can think of. Some titles have their own style added into the manga, this is totally fine - so cartoonish features and anatomically incorrect proportions are fine - so long as backgrounds or character art is high quality and reminiscent of realistic imagery/CGI then its eligible for this list.

Shoujo manga tends to have a reputation for telling the same kind of stories over and over - romances, magical girls, cute animals, fujobait involving a cast of hot guys (often flocking around a hapless female lead), and slice-of-life series starring characters doing mundane things. They tend to be full of fluff or melodrama and are generally low on violence. But not every shoujo title fits into the "usual" categories meant for teenage girls. This list features atypical titles that you probably wouldn't guess ran in a shoujo magazine.

Worldbuilding - "the process of constructing a world, originally an imaginary one, sometimes associated with a fictional universe." These kinds of manga are usually set in a fantasy and/or sci-fi world, and excel at establishing & showcasing the rules/history/economy of their fictional universe. List was created through collective data from multiple websites of people's answers as to what manga are considered to have great world building.

Here are all the shoujo manga I think one should read in order to cover all bases. I organized this list by general theme, with publishing series at the bottom.

We start off with serious drama and slice of life series, then period and fantasy action and war series, then science-fiction series, then magical girl series, then series for younger audiences, then romance comedies, then drama slice of life romances, then horror and supernatural manga, and lastly, important ongoing series.

I'm currently using this list too, despite me being the one who created it!

Mangaby noodlesan

shoujo and josei titles that may appeal more to shounen/seinen readers looking to get into the demographic but want to avoid the stereotypical shoujo romances told from the female POV

A guide for anyone looking to explore more modern shoujo and not knowing where to start and optimized for variety.

The genres are sorted as follows:

High School Romance
Fantasy and Supernatural
Queer Series
Historical
Romcoms and Comedy
Trashy Series of Ill Repute
Isekai

Unusual/intriguing premise, complex worldbuilding, well-written characters, big cast, supporting characters play important roles, multiple arcs, psychological themes. Long-running series (longer than at least 5 volumes).

The main plot has to be something other than just romance. It can be romance-focused if it equally focuses on another genre such as supernatural, action, adventure, psychological etc.

Highschool setting or slice of life themes are excluded unless the story has more interesting/unusual themes other than the two.
