Both feature a story about a swordsman in Feudal Japan. these titles boast spectacular art, a riveting story and epic samurai action. Arguably the 2 of the best seinen manga today.

Berserk addpermalink

Despite the difference in drawing style and adult content (i.e. sexual material of Berserk) these two mangas have a distinct similarity when it comes to atmosphere. They both sport a definite anti-hero, gore, beautiful characters and a great story. I could honestly not choose one over the other.

Both manga are set in a period when samurai were still active in Japan. Both also deal with the changes in the samurai world when Japan started to open up to the Western civilization. And, of course, both manga tell the story of a rounin searching for redemption.

Both are about a swordsman going on a journey to pursue their respective goals but they've both come across someone who've later become close to them. Both series also feature an antagonistic group who seek to destroy a certain establishment. If you've enjoyed Rurouni Kenshin then you'll most likely enjoy Blade of the Immortal (and vice versa).

The premise of both series is a man who wants to atone for the sins/crimes he has committed. Of course, there is way more to the stories of both mangas than that which I don't want to spoil. They also both have a historical backdrop and are of similar length. The main leads of both mangas (Kenshin/Manji) I find very likeable and well done, as well as both female leads (Kaoru/Rin). Both supporting casts are great and contain very memorable characters. The villains that appear throughout both series have a sense of moral ambiguity to them to the point that 'villain' isn't a fitting word to describe quite a lot of them, with the exception of a few who are truly despicable, but it's true that Blade has a larger quantity of sympathetic antagonists. Both mangas also utilise flashback sequences at multiple instances for backstory and have rather lengthy story arcs. RuroKen and Blade make great use of their historical setting despite both series being set at different times of Japanese history, with RuroKen being a Meiji Restoration narrative while Blade is set in the mid-Tokugawa era.

(Also in my humble opinion, the last story arcs of both these series are the high points.)

The similarities more-or-less end there. Blade of the Immortal is a seinen series and therefore has much more mature content such as extreme gore and sexual violence, its story delves into some seriously dark territory at times;  RuroKen does delve into some serious and depressing territory but it is a shounen and naturally, doesn't go quite as far as Blade. Furthermore, RuroKen has significantly more comedy than Blade (particularly in the earlier chapters), but that's not to say Blade doesn't have its humorous moments. Additionally, Blade has a much more realistic and sketchy art style compared to the more solid and typically 'anime' style of RuroKen, but I greatly enjoy both styles for what they are and they compliment the tone and atmosphere flawlessly. 

I think it's safe to say that if you liked Rurouni Kenshin then you'll like Blade of the Immortal as well, especially if you are a fan of Japanese period drama and can stomach its darker tone.

Historical fiction epics that are full of dismemberment and gory battles involving samurai, assassins, ninja & everything else you'd expect to see in a Japanese period piece where swords are used. 

Azumi is as unknown outside of Japan as BotI is known. This is because, until very recently, NONE of the manga had ever been translated into English. Dark Horse have been releasing BotI officially for nearly two decades, as well as there being internet translations by fans. The only translated Azumi content before the recent manga fan translation started was for the two live-action movies. And it's a pity because Azumi is a long-running manga classic on the same page as Berserk and other old/endless series loved outside of Japan.

The biggest linking factor BotI and Azumi share is their female characters. In BotI mentally strong female characterisation (the most skilled fighter, Maki, also being a female) defines it as a series. During a time when females held no power in a man's world, it's the heroine Rin that drives the story onwards and grows from a girl into a cunning woman over the course of the series. Azumi's titular heroine walks a similar path to Rin - growing as a person and a woman with each trial she faces - but, unlike Rin, Azumi starts out extremely skilled as a warrior. Azumi is like Maki and Rin from BotI being merged into one character. 

If there is one negative Azumi has that BotI doesn't, it's the art. The titular heroine, Azumi, is beautiful... but the HUGE old school male eyebrows and some cartoony design choices hurt it. Having said that, BotI's art improved over its lengthy duration, and Azumi's artist improves later as well if the sequel scans are anything to go by. It's hard for an artist not to improve when drawing a series for 1-2 decades!  read more

They both about a man who is plagued with immortality, trying to find a way to become human again and both meet a girl on their journey and start travelling together. But that's the only thing in common, as they are completely different in feel and genres.

Both are serious, well drawn, deeply complex, adult samurai stories.  Both feature men with dark pasts who are traveling and selling their sword, while striving for an underlying personal goal.

Shin Angyo Onshi addpermalink

Shin Angyo Onshi (SAO) and Blade of the Immortal (BotI) are manga that are set in the past. There is plenty of fighting, suspense, adventure, and a great deal of gore. The main character involves a duo composed of a girl and a man, both parties seeking revenge. These stories aren't for the faint of heart, due to some mature themes like sexual assault or murder. If you like reading fighting manga with a little bit of fantasy, I recommend reading SAO first, and if you enjoy it, it's a given that you'll like BotI too.

It is not hard to see how much Samurai Executioner and the works of Kazuo Koike have influenced  the  gritty portrayal of Japan in Blade of the Immortal.  Characters and  world building  in Blade of the Immortal, despite taking a different perspective than Samurai Executioner share  simmilar concepts and ideas. Hiroaki Samura even introduces an indirect reference  and tribute to the main character of Samurai Executioner in the third arc of Blade of the Immortal.

The protagonist is an immortal guy that is continuously beaten to a pulp and keeps killing and killing no matter how many times he has been cut or shot. Very explicit and detailed gore scenes.
