Synopsis

The four heroes are on their way home after their final confrontation with the Demon King. Led by the talkative mage of the group, Nina, they head to the other heroes' hometown of Pocca. On the journey home, she reminisces about her past as a stray orphan and the family she found consisting of the hero and his two companions. However, despite the warm atmosphere on the surface, dread looms over Nina as she thinks about the villagers' reactions to their long-awaited return. After all, the news she has to deliver may not be something they would like to hear...

This was a fun read. I liked the overall concept, and the artwork is very strong. There's even a full-colour page, and it's beautifully illustrated. The character dynamics feel fun, and you get a good enough sense of their personalities considering how short the manga is. The main character reflects on a very emotional journey and even a bit of philosophical exploration.

It's hard to say why it's so good without spoiling it, so I'll just say that the plot is probably the strongest point.

The art is beautifully done and is capable of depicting the emotions of the characters throughout the entire short story. On a second reading, you'll understand especially what I mean by this

Nina's experience of bringing her comrades back home while shouldering all the hardship along the way makes this an endearing one. I don't mind the short story due to how well done and neatly it ends.

I do believe that given the situation and the theme of this world that all the motions and thoughts were very logical and ...

Frankly, this is bad.

Ryouji Hirano's art is better than it was in Bozebeats but still really weak and messy on almost every page (with just a few exceptions). The story blatantly gives away the twist on page 2 and then proceeds to pretend that we don't know until the "reveal" near the end. It's not all bad, as there is a decent amount of character writing and the rest of the pacing is theoretically solid - however, between the extremely jarring mismatch between the information the reader has versus the information Hirano wanted the reader to have, and the painful-to-read art, those positives are strangled ...
