Synopsis

The island of Ilegenes is home to an internationally renown genetic engineering research institution. In addition to their research involving genetic manipulation, a dark underground organization exists called the Black Market. Great profit is gained from the mass production of clones and the sale of human bodies. Thus, people refer to Ilegenes as the place God has turned away from—The Genetic Sodom.

Fon F. Littenber enrolled in the Ilegenes military school to become strong. He wants to avenge his parents' deaths by destroying the Black Market organization. Fon is a cool, collected young man whose attitude and parentage separate him from his peers. His father is Professor Littenber, the father of Genetic Sodom and the authority on brain research. Due to this, Fon is targeted by rival students and nasty rumors that claim he was subjected to genetic manipulation at the hands of his father. What fate awaits Fon in Ilegenes?

ILEGENES
Ilegenes is unfortunately one of those mangas that recieve very little recognition despite being a masterful piece of work. When I stumbled across this manga it was like finding a hidden gem. It is what motivated me to finally join this site just so I could write its first review.

What captured me most about Ilegenes: The Genetic Sodom, is the main character Fon. His charisma seems to affect everyone in his military school and it is also what captivated me. Fon's character, like the island of Ilegenes, consists of an intricate web of mysteries and secrets. As he tries to unravel the intrigues of his read more

Ilegenes dynamically blends the concepts of politics, power, scientific cloning and genetic engineering geared towards a darker path of human nature (in a psychological way). Coupled with friendship and brotherly romance, the manga distinguishes itself from other series of a similar genre by pausing at the appropriate spots instead of trying too hard.

I love the unique aspects of the plot, the charisma of Fon and the seemingly frivolous yet caring personality of Jacques. The interaction between Fon and Jacques is the manga’s major selling point – yes, readers can simply assume there is definitely some extraordinary brotherhood between these two yet at the read more

Toxic feels like it's trying very hard to best Ilegenes and borrowed certain aspects (cute, uniformed guys in shoujo military setting, revolutionaries), but instead of providing light commentary on genetic engineering, it has more man-whoring (perhaps a positive with someone frustrated at Ilegenes?). It mostly feels like a rip-off so far, so try the other out.
Both of these are hidden gems in the world of manga. Both MC's have pasts shrouded in mystery, riddled with danger and heartache. The art to both is extrardinary, and the relationships between charactors both touching and provoking. These mangas with make you scream, cry, laugh, and want to read them all over again.
