I am just curious to know if there are more Otakus or anime fans on MAL.I think that difference between the two is obvious but just to be sure I will explain it.

Anime fan-people who like watching animes in their free time as a hobby but who think of animes only as something that they like watching to pass the time.

Otaku-people who really care about animes and for whom animes are matched more than just a hobby, people who have big passion for animes and who give animes high priority in their lives.

I am 100% Otaku what about you?
The real world is past the virtual world is future.

Thirding.

By the way, OP, the plural form of "anime" is fucking "anime" and having an extreme passion for literally anything would qualify you as an "otaku".
As an example: I east, sleep, and breathe cars, therefore one could consider me a car "otaku".

Oh, and one other thing: The plural form of "otaku" is "otaku".

You're a potato? What a shock, 'cause I'm a tomato!
In all seriousness, I wouldn't fully consider myself an otaku. ... look, there's tons of programming outside of Japan that I would like to see, too!

I like to call myself an Otaku, just because people associate it with anime so it clears up my hobbies real quick whenever I meet new people. Truth be told though... I'm not that much of a nerd. Sure I like nerdy things but I just don't have the kind of passion that others do. I realized this when I went to my first anime convention this year.
Let this be our little secret, no needs to know we're feeling HIGHER AND HIGHER AND HIGHER!

All I learned is that I'll never be able to make an anime-themed cosplay. At least nothing accurate.

Movie characters, on the other hand...

I'm an anime fan.
I know people that call me a figure otaku, though. But I really, really detest that word. I refuse to use it at all. I have hobbies - everyone has hobbies. Whatever.

I kind of feel like any english speaking person who refers to themselves as an "otaku" are really just weeaboos, because they feel the need to self identify with a Japanese term.

There are more fans and less Otaku, but the buying fanbase in Japan is mostly Otaku, in the US it's half fans and half obsessed weaboos.

Don't get me wrong, I love anime and it's probably my favorite hobby but I just consider myself a fan of anime, and everything else I enjoy for that matter. I don't see a reason for people to join any of the cancerous subcultures like otakus, bronies, trekkies, and etc. I mean, I get it that a lot of the times it's a bunch of the younger fans or that they are just using them as harmless monikers, but it's really the subculture aspect that gives things bad names and I'd want to distance myself from that part of the fanbase as much as possible. At the end of the day all these things are just hobbies.

I'm an anime fan. It's my favorite medium of entertainment just after MMA. That being said, I am in no shape or form an otaku or weeaboo. I do not pretend to be Japanese or obsess over a character. I do like to collect statues and figures though.

Isn't the word "otaku" the Japanese word for sloppy, obsessive, socially inept people with no job or social net worth? If so, I'd imagine that most here couldn't be refered to as such. But you never know, some sick shit in the internet ಠ-ಠ

I think you're thinking about NEET. Otaku is basically the japanese for nerd and you can be an otaku for just about anything. Like Movie-otaku, train-otaku or gaming-otaku. It's just not anime.

For the love of life, the plural of anime stays anime.

And I'm absolutely an anime fan, although I also like manga, Cosplay and the like, and it may be a part of my life, but it absolutely doesn't rule me. Otaku is a fucking insult in Japan by the way, I don't get why people even want to call themselves something like that.

But no, anime by no means is a priority in my life, that would be quite retarded, wouldn't it? It's just a hobby, and by no means is it more important to me than my close friends or family. However I also wouldn't let those people tell me not to watch anime, it's not their fucking business. However, I wouldn't cancel a meeting with a friend to watch some fucking cartoons.

Of course they do. But they know they're losers already, so now they just want to find a common identity with other losers who also wish they were from the grorious rand of nippon. It's kind of sad.
