No, don't do that. The second episode ends differently if I remember correctly. The reason there's a remake is because the first two episodes seemed a little rushed I think.

Awesome. I've been meaning to get into this anime for so long since I keep reading everywhere that it's the best anime ever. I was wondering what I should view first, but thanks to this thread all my questions have cleared up.

I'm on around episode 16 and its really boring, does it pick up?

I think its the old animation that bothers me or something its just not capturing my full interest for some reason. I'm gonna finish it because it might be one of those anime where I realize its greatness towards the end

But does it pick up?

The correct watching order for the entire series is:

Movie: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars
Movie: Overture to a New War
Main 110 OVA series

Then the 2 prequel series, but really it's more like 1 large prequel series since the correct watching order for them is a mixture of both series and the 3rd movie

Spiral Labyrinth 1-14
Silver-White Valley 1-4
The Mutineer 1-4
The Duelist 1-4
Movie: Golden Wings
The Retriever 1-4
Dreams of the Morning, Dreams of the Night 1-4
One hundred Billion Stars, One Hundred Billion Lights 1-12
3rd Battle of Tiamat 1-2
Dishonor 1-4

Bakabt. You'll find them by searching the name of the movie and bakabt. The 2nd one must be typed in English.

So the most important to watch is My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, Overture to a New War, and the first OVA series. Do I have to watch the two Gaiden series to know and understand the main plot?

I have watched the series and all OVAs (165 episode, 73 hours) twice in one year and I'm still tempted to watch it again. Never happened to me before with any other anime.

Then the 2 prequel series

I endorse this viewing order. Its the right way to watch the series.

Op mentioned that he would take suggestions for the title of the sticky, so here goes:

I was uncertain of the meaning of the title of this thread, thinking that it perhaps referred to the "Preview" movies of the series. This is reinforced by both the related anime list having all of these "Prequels", and the posts in the first page of the forum discussing the watch order of said Prequels, which could add to the confusion. Remember the majority of people will only see the title of the Sticky Thread, not actually read the pages and comments therein. Ofcourse now I am certain of its intent, namely to warn against watching the previews at the end of the episode, but I feel that the title could be a bit more descriptive to reflect that. While I myself avoid previews from any show like the plague, there is no doubt that LOGH has the biggest spoiler previews ever (I retroactively looked at some of the infamous episode previews, you know which one in particular I'm talking about) and as such every possible step must be taken to warn future viewers from potentially catasrophic spoilers that can ruin the show for many. As such the minimum change to the title should include "Don't Watch the Episode Previews".

This is not extraneous or overly obvious, especially since the beginning of the title discusses the Viewing Order. If one erroneously reads/interprets it as "Lotgh FAQ and First Time Viewing Guide: Don't Watch the Previews!" then it could seem to indicate that the 2nd warning is directly related to the view order/viewing guide, as a succinct and summarial imperative to skip the prequels, atleast before watching the OVA itself. Sure the actual first post explains clearly not to watch the episode previews, but the title itself which is more important doesnt properly convey the message IMO.

Most fans would recommend the following order (and I personally endorse it):

My conquest is the sea of stars -> Overture to a New War - > Main OVA -> A hundred billion stars; a hundred billion lights -> spiral labyrinth.

The Golden Wings movie is chronologically the first, but most fans don't like it, so its really up to you how or when to watch it.

I saw the first 5 eps of the main ova, then I saw Golden wings, my conquest, overture, and came back to the OVA. And I'm glad I watched it in that order, helped me enjoy the first season more.

This sounds about right. I also watched a few episodes of the Ova first, then watched My Conquest. Golden Wings is optional, but if you can get over the animation difference and voice actor changes, then its best to watch it during the first season of the Ova as well. Unfortunately I watched Overture to a New War late in the Ova after the 3rd season, and eventhough I remembered what was going on and the characters, it would have been much better to watch it during the first season when it was more relevant.

Watching the series again with Family, I followed a similar approach to Koreye, namely watching the first 4-5 episodes, folowed by the 2 main movies (not golden wings). This is the ideal way to watch things initially to maximize the impact.

why not golden wings? and why golden wings first? after the first 5 episodes?

because the overwhelming consensus of the fans (even the die hard fans) is that Golden wings is mediocre and doesn't add much to the literature or the background. Whatever backstory there is, has been covered in the OVA and movies in a much better way. Also, the Art, VA cast, and the overall aesthetics of Golden Wings is very different from the main OVA and the other movies. If you skip it you won't miss much as the background is covered in the OVA and the other two movies in sufficient details.

Why golden wings first? you mean why I watched it before the other two movies? because chronologically its the first.

you can watch it the way I watched it, or you can keep it simple and follow the order most fans would recommend (which is completely fine, don't fret over it too much) : My conquest is the sea of stars - > overture to a new war -> Main OVA

Before you waste/spend your time watching this masterpiece i recommend this:
Just go watch Mirai Nikki if you haven't. Did you like it?Best anime ever?Yuno best female? If yes, you will not like this anime, trust me. Don't waste your time you will thank me later.
If no it kinda works like this. The more shit you think mirai nikki is, the more you will like LoTGH. It really works like this sorry. The two animes are just not compatible they are for different mindsets and personalities. You can also replace mirai nikki with other crap i just used mirai nikki because for me its the top cancer of anime. Thx.

There have been no details released as to what is actually being covered in the new adaptation. If I recall, it was specifically statated not to be a "remake" of the original adaptation.

Given that, there's no telling whether the new anime will be the "same" story, nor whether if it'll actually be any good.

The entire purpose of this thread is to PREVENT spoilers for unsuspecting viewers. As such it's pretty inappropriate to have the shows biggest spoilers in tempting SPOILER tags. While technically not illegal i would still advocate those posts get removed from this thread since its so contrary to its essence. Also this isn't a thread to discuss in a roundabout way the shows biggest spoilers. There are plenty of other avenues and threads/ Logh Fanclubs where that can be discussed, but as is it's detrimental to new future Logh fans who are reading this as a guide and may get screwed over in the process (potentially losing us loyal fans due to the series being tainted for them). This is unacceptable due to Logh being criminally under watched on Mal, and turning off potential Logh fans is a true travesty.

Either way, I think I'll still love this series, as I also got spoiled for Code Geass's ending yet I still was very surprised when it happened. =P

Legend of the Galactic Heros is one of the, if not most unique anime is existence.
It doesn't hold the audiences hand while traversing through itself.
It expects you to be able to keep up with its political intrigue and philosophical and moral dilemmas. It's an emotional rollercoaster that will leave you wanting more and more.

Never before has a description turned me off of anything like this has. It's a recommendation so cliche and condescending that I cannot imagine myself liking it, if this is what its fans say about it.

Who would have thunk. People who really like the show have a high opinion of it.
Insanity the likes we will never be able to understand, I tell you.

I know what you mean. Many overrated shows have descriptions like these, and they just sound exaggerated and whatnot. (I mean, emotional rollarcoaster...what, really?) Saying that, you should give this a watch.
I was pretty skeptic going into this series, but I ended up enjoying it. And at first it can be hard to get into, but once everything starts rolling it's a great series. LotGH is full of political intrigue, philosophy and ideologies, humour, wit, sarcasm, and two great protagonists. I think it's something you will enjoy. Go look up some quotes, clips or whatnot if you're not convinced, they might pique your interest. Or read santetjan's review (first one on main OVA). Especially the last 3 paragraphs that summarize the series, I think it's pretty true.

I suggest this watching order:

I saw the first 5 eps of the main ova, then I saw Golden wings, my conquest, overture, and came back to the OVA. And I'm glad I watched it in that order, helped me enjoy the first season more.

Ah, I wish I saw this topic before I started the series. I just dived straight into the main OVA and then watched the first 3 movies. The main OVA was hard to get into at first. But after doing that, I will endorse this order of watching as well:
Conquest -> Overture -> Main OVA ->Stars -> Labyrinth

I haven't seen the last two OVA series yet (Stars + Labyrinth), but seeing as how they dive into the backgrounds of the characters, I can definitely see that an appreciation and understanding of the two protagonists would greatly improve the experience.

Uh, if I'm on episode 47 or maybe a few more by the time this is answered, is there a point in watching these prequel films now?-A friend of mine made it sound some prequel was made so I wouldn't have to watch certain eps at the start, but I decided to just go through the episodes out of convenience but this topic is making me think maybe I didn't gather his intent correctly.- And I'm kind of confused, are there movies between the first two and the last two seasons? Will these movies like be needed to be watched not to feel like you made some jump in time?

All of the OVA's take place before episode one and can be easily watched at any time.
If you're at 47 just keep watching the main series and hit the side stuff afterwards.

Sounds like what he was talking about is "Overture to a New War" which is a more in depth retelling of the first few episode. It gives a LOT more information then episodes one and two do.
