Spotlight Character: Siegfried Kircheis (Legend of the Galactic Heroes) MAL Character Information Page: Siegfried Kircheis MAL Favorites: 90 For the next week I would like to have everyone familiar with this character discuss what they think makes it an exceptional character. What attributes make it stand out in the ocean of interesting characters that exist in the realms of anime and manga. Unlike the other two subjects I will not force this conversation to fall into any set structure. Characters that are nominated typically get here because they are adept at breaking the existing character moulds and defying definition. Because of this freedom I encourage everyone to do their very best to stay on topic and keep any and all debate civil. | ...Well, OK, not really, but someone had to make that joke. Unfortunately, Kircheis, while a good and likeable character, was much more powerful in his absence than he ever was in his presence, and served much more to develop Reinhard than to be an excellent character in his own right. Easy no. |
| His effect on Reinhard is seen even in life, as Kircheis was the character that gives room for Reinhard to feel like a human being instead of a revenge-bent empire taking machine (the Guts to Reinhard's Griffith). That only works because Kircheis isn't one for large ambitions or dramatic gestures, so in that sense he is the most down-to-earth and in some sense relatable character in the first season or so. He treats other characters with relative amounts of respect, even on the other side of the conflict, and he provides a significant amount of insight to every situation he is involved in, and with that we can see that he is intelligent, even compared to the impressive cast surrounding him. I can't help but vote "yes" for having the same or more impact on the show as a whole in 26 episodes compared to almost every single other character. |

| I felt the gaidens especially Spiral Labyrinth and A Hundred Billion Stars blahblahblah gave a lot of character to Kircheis. I honestly didn't care much about him on the main series. |

Care to elaborate on that? I watched both Gaiden series and didn't feel that they told me anything about Kircheis that I couldn't find out from watching the main series. |
