I was disappointed by Gon vs Gido fight and it was the one I looked forward most. There wasn't much animation and speedlines over mostly static image are not what I like in anime. Second fight was better and music fit well. Third one was okay, I guess.

Killua vs Riehlvelt. The animation + godly song makes it perfect.

Not much animation? Static images? I didn't see the same thing you did

Yep, especially when Gon threw the stoneplate with Gido, it was a static image with some effects( dust, speedlines) and a clumsy unfluid CGI plate and Gido. I know that comparsions to '99 series are frowned upon here but, well, see for yourself.

So one part of the fight with a static image used for dramatic effect and the whole fight had little animation? And it's not a static image if Gido is clearly moving

Maybe the stoneplate scene isn't specially impressive, but look at this:

This comparison clearly shown the differences technology has made. The 4:3 ratio of 1999 is so limited that the framing tends to be so tightly cropped, its hard to feel any sort of spacial relationship between the characters and the environment. They relied on exaggerating Gon's swinging arms action to display the action. The 16:9 ratio of 2011 allows a spacious canvas for composition, where you get to actually feel the bigger space and where the opponent is. When the space is bigger, the movement is lessen. From an direction point, the 2011 sequence is a lot better for me It felt cinematic and 'bigger', the way Gon is animated gave you the feeling of a hard pull, and there's a deeper space (distance) emphasized by that holding frame (not a static image btw). The 1999 sequence came off looking silly...where Gon swing the tile overhead...err... Oookayy. That's the problem with 1999 version in general, it always felt so 'small', the spacial relationship felt inconsistent at times. Well it as the 4:3 days....
