The new character is kinda boring.

Anyway karuta was way more challenging when they played it with the cards flipped.

Just being honest. I dislike Taichi, the way he acts and his personality, annoying.

Arata on the other hand is my favorite character, I'm rooting for him.

I liked this episode better than the previous one. Good new character.

Man, Arata would have destroyed them with his photographic memory, good thing he wasn't there or it wouldn't have been interesting.

Taichi is pretty awesome in my opinion, I don't dislike him anymore.

I really liked this episode, mainly because most of the focus was on Taichi! :)

I actually don't miss Arata, I'm not even sure if I like him or not.

i like the episode :D

Desk-Kun was okay, he didn't do much other than spectate.

but at least Taichi showed despite losing(either by Karuta or Chihaya) he still keep on fighting.

i've grown a new respect for this man :P

my favorite scenes of Chihaya :D

her charming points makes me love her even more!!

poor Desk-kun T__T

acquired new member!!

can't wait for more new member's

though as much as Arata needs some screen time too, i prefer Taichi for now :P

This episode focuses on Taichi and shows Chihaya's 'weakness' (unable to memorise the cards when flipped over). The new guy kind of annoys me, but I suppose his attitude is understandable (somewhat) from what he had experienced. Maybe with him inside they'll have different ways of practising karuta?

Wonder who the next member would be...

Awesome episode, playing it with the cards flipped was quite interesting and Taichi winning was also quite nice! They got another member in the club so they only need one more to be a real club! Lets see how that goes.

5/5

Plot dusting off Taichi and places as the fulcrum of the narrative, not bad given the bad situation in which he was slipping.
Chihaya is epic anyway. The new character looks interesting, we'll see in the next episodes.
Nice design, warm colors and BGM are the best part of the anime series.
I hope that ample space is given to all sorts of characters in the story! ^ ^ "

1. Chihaya has gotten loud, reckless, & maybe too passionate

2. I like everything about this series except for karuta. It keeps putting me to sleep.

Is it only me, or both the other characters look like way younger than Chihaya and Taichi?
Somehow they don't fit there too much, especially Megane-kun. I hope it will be more balanced later on.

Honestly that new kid got my nerves. "I don't have talent".
That's one of the most lame excuses I ever heard.

Talent doesn't go to a person, a person creates talent. When a person practices something and they get better and better then they have created a talent for that. In sports people start from the bottom and with hard work, determination, effort and patience athletes become great players.

At least the new kid went back at the end to the karuta club.

Chihaya reaction when she lost was so cute hahaha :3

I had pretty much the same reaction as Taichi : ''Who is that boring kid?''.
How can he throw that desk that high? o.O

Well, one member left! And I can say for 99% sure that he's that fat guy in the OP :P

Pretty great episode, love how she just dragged the guy desk and all to the club xD Felt bad for the kid since he seems to have been used a lot.

I like this show a lot, but I'd like it so much more without Arata in it. I love these Taichi-focused episodes, then I remember how soon surely Chihaya will go back to thinking nothing but ARATA ARATA ARATA ARATA and it's a bummer. I feel so bad for the guy. :/

Taichi is an idiot though. Instead of confessing to Chihaya he ends up with another girl who he doesn't even seem to care about. The fact that he's got a girlfriend screwed any chances he had with Chihaya. Then there's the fact that he acted like a complete douche to Arata at first which led to Chihaya showing interest in him.

Chihaya is so awesome, like her reactions to the events surrounding her are beautiful.
I'm loving this character, not just her, i think all the characters feel so alive and are awesome in their own.

Excellent Episode.

Taichi beating Chihaya in karuta with flipped cards was very nice thing for a change. She always wins against, it was some damn time to see him beat her in a different way.

not really a fan of the new dude. would've given it a 3/5 if it wasn't for the taichi focused parts - which by the way, has grown so much!!!

i like that chihaya's skills grow based on the new friends she makes and the teachings that they offer based on their personalities, instead of a methodic, linear way of development. it also reflects on her relationship towards the game from the beginning: she has no interest in playing by herself; even when they parted ways when they were kids, she kept playing with the promise that she'd see the boys again, and so it's extremely pleasing to me that they kept that theme throughout her growth as well.

Man I feel like I had a way different reaction to this episode than everyone else, and it all came down to one comment made by the new kid. Specifically when he said to Chihaya that there's no point in playing because there's no professionals/no money/it's just a game etc. I was literally like "Chihaya, tell him you're a class A pro????" But after googling I was unable to find any indication that there is even a borderline livable amount of money to be made in karuta.

Now I'm finding myself saying the same. What is the point? Why go through all the trouble of having competitive leagues with a similar Dan based ranking system of shogi if there's no money to be made. What's even the point of dedicating your life to become a master as Arata wanted to do if it's literally an empty title.

I feel my knowledge of how competitive shogi works and how much money pros can make has ruined my experience somehow. It's not like anything has really changed. I just set myself with expectations that have been shattered. I almost can't blame Chihaya's family for not showing a ton of support in those flashback episodes. At the time I was thinking "just wait until she becomes pro and starts bring home the cash," but now I can't help but think "she made class A, so what?"

I guess I just need shift gears and treat this as a typically highschool club anime.

I'm surprised Taichi is able to keep a cool head while being obliterated by Chihaya. Maybe it's cause he's not really serious about it. I take that back actually. He really got into it during that flipped karuta game.

Is studying too much really a thing kids pick on you for in Japanese high schools? In my high school kids still picked on kids for being different in other ways (I should know) but they were pretty much over picking on people for studying or being nerdy by that age. Also, this is a bit counter to the western image of Japanese schools, where it's portrayed as if all Japanese students care about is studying, lol.

Also, I feel like this show is rushing through the plot...

Seems like we're gathering the club members first before actually teaching them karuta. That also means pretty fast character introductions while still developing the already existing ones ...and I don't really like that all that much here. We get to know one of Chihaya's weaknesses as well as her strengths and showcase Taichi's intelligence, but the new guy falls short in terms of characterization I'd say. He's an introvert and would like a social circle, but that's ...pretty much it. Doesn't seem all that interesting so far, but I blame Chihaya and Taichi getting focus for that. Hope he gets some more character later on.

Also, this structure now has Oe just awkwardly operate the radio without really doing anything else or learning to play karuta herself, which also seems odd.
