Spotlight Anime: Ga-Rei: Zero

MAL Anime Information Page: Ga-Rei: Zero

MAL Score – 8.09 (by 18211 users)
Ranked - #315
Popularity - #151

For the next week I would like to have a discussion about the anime that focuses on the key elements that we here on MAL use to critically rate an anime: Animation, Sound, Characters, Story, and Enjoyment.

I would like everyone to approach this thread as if you were going to write a review and structure your initial post like this:

Animation - insert rating
Sound - insert rating
Characters - insert rating
Story - insert rating
Enjoyment - insert rating

Animation - discuss any pros and cons of the animation styling used in the series, try to include some specifics.

Sound - describe any of the things you liked or didn't care for in regards to the music and sound effects used in the series

etc...

If you are having trouble writing up a review or coming up with specific pros and cons, please don't worry. Just do the best you can with it and if you can only write two or three sentences about any of the 5 elements then that's OK. Not everyone here is currently at a level which will allow them to articulate their thoughts and opinions.

After your initial post is made you can feel free to civilly discuss issues of contention. I am sure there will be many opinions expressed here that some of us will disagree upon and criticise and it is for that reason that this entire club exists. So I hope everyone has fun and I am really looking forward to watching this discussion unfold.

Well, in all respect, I found the anime to be better than the original material. Though, there`s been quite a bashing in the comment section that is, I must say, completely justified. I enjoyed Ga-Rei: Zero, but I would never be able to "objectively" defend it, since it's not that good in the first place.

An easy no.

As promised, I finished the 4th episode. I started watching this anime solely for the sake of having something to vote on (since last week for me was a week of "I don't Know"). The anime is short enough so it fit the bill. I started watching it without any extreme expectations which means I didn't expect it to suck or be a masterpiece but I was wrong. It really was a bad anime. This anime doesn't deserve a serious discussion in my opinion so I'm just gonna point out some of the many flaws it has. Here's the formula for Ga-Rei Zero:
7 cups Shounen + 3 cups ecchi + 2 cups shoujo + bad dialogue sprinkled on top.
Breaking it down:
A story about two friends that are very close but one of them turns evil and they fight while the non-evil friend tries to save the evil one from the darkness (Naruto, Kiba and tons of other shounen much?). So the core is cliche, how about adding other cliche elements to make it perfect?! So the parents are dead or neglecting their children. The non-evil character is superior power wise but is an annoying naive person (too nice, too good) so she ends up putting everyone possible in danger and makes the episodes run for as long as they can before she decides to kick some a** now that everyone is either dead or badly injured. (I think I'm writing about Naruto?) OK now all we need is throwing in some short skirts (high school uniforms) for satisfaction of otakus but if that's not enough how about being really cool and adding a bath scene and a kiss. OMG, MOE. Yeah now things seem to be alright. Oh, yeah we need an evil force that is acting behind the scene. Let's give him a cliche design even. So his hair is covering his eyes (mysterious enough eh?) and his hair is white, perfect.
And so on.
The plot of this anime is so cliche that after the third episode I made a bet with myself about how this anime finishes. Here's what I wrote: " The naive one gathers up her power, she defeats the evil one but the evil one is shown to have always loved her friend and dies". I asked a friend of mine on another anime community and he confirmed my guess. (Itachi and Sasuke?!) So yeah I call this anime a complete waste of time.

This is one of the very first anime I watched once I begun watching anime again, and I enjoyed it a lot back in the day. I would've probably abstained since I don't remember much of it, but seeing so much bashing... I think I'll quickly rewatch it to cast a more precise vote. Sure thing is, when I watched it, it was fun and felt pleasantly canonical. Probably, more to come.

I'm just always infinitely amused to see people who haven't completed a work commenting on it. What is always said? It's simple to trash a series, the true difficulty is in defending an Anime. Especially since there is such a general hatred for everything "cliche" these days, for good reason?.I can't help but echo Desirio's point about Ga:rei being an enjoyable show, if you are not predisposed to fits of epileptic convulsion when shounen elements are used. I thought the mixing of genre's was actually done pretty well in this series. It's approach seemed like a combination of Darker Than Black and Bleach, but considering it's director I suppose it would be more accurate to use Kara no Kyoukai and Bleach. There definitely isn't anything ground breaking about this series, but it did do a decent job at blending genres. I remember not liking the series at the beginning too, but it was later able to attract my attention with some of it's more dramatic character developments and or deaths. There was a particular episode of which I forget now, but it was in a deep dark hole and it involved a particular evil demon vampire. That was the episode that finally hooked me into finishing the series. The character dynamic between Kagura and Yomi wasn't new, but it was executed well. Kagura's inner conflict is definitely one of the many shounen elements bound to annoy those who despise the genre. The series wasn't exemplary, but it was entertaining for people who don't have problem with suspending the left side of their brain for a while. The animation annoyed me at first but, it seemed to get better as the series went on. I really don't remember the music so that either points to my horrible memory or it just wasn't that memorable. This series is basically meat and potato's not Flambé.

@ Orion1 & Desirio:

I have no problems with calling any anime enjoyable since that's for each person to decide. For sure there's market for any anime out there but that doesn't mean that the show is supposed to be nominated just based on the enjoyment factor and even more so it doesn't mean that it's induction worthy. I have enjoyed many anime that as a critic I wouldn't even give them a chance of being analyzed since I'd be the first person to trash them in that regard. But I'd never nominate such titles. My best example here can be "Darker than Black". I really enjoyed the first season of that series but I'd never think it's induction worthy.
My point is:
Ga-Rei Zero might be enjoyable for many shounen/ecchi fans but that does not mean it's "good". My bashing in my opinion can still be valid even if I had enjoyed the show which I didn't.

@Kokuro: And I still say that to see such comments about a series you haven't completed, actually dropped on the fourth episode, seems premature. I thought about it Kokuro and I've decided that you might be a little Jaded. Not a bad thing, we all are considering the amount of anime and manga we've collectively seen. Denying otakudum is basically useless at this point I'd think for you. Embrace it, let your hair down, put on your Cosplay kittie outfit and MEOW!

But seriously, please finish a series before applying final judgments, I'm thinking this forum is a place for people to critique the "series" Ga-rei-Zero, not just episodes 1-4.

Ironically, even after you having only finished four episodes, got a pretty good understanding of what the series is "basically" about. But if you are basing your opinions on other peoples, that's basically like using cliff notes on a test. I'm not trying to be mean or call you out, but. No I'm calling you out on this point. I apologize if you've since finished the series and have the "exact" same opinion.I'm thinking watching an entire series before making comments on a you decide forum should be understood as obligatory.

On another note, I would never have nominated this series either after having completed the series and all. *wink*

1. Sorry for hijacking the thread in order to respond to Orion1.

Satteto...:

I don't consider being an otaku as a bad thing but I don't think I'd qualify as an otaku (at least not during the past few years). At any rate, what I posted about Ga-Rei Zero is related to 1/3 of the series which by the rules of this club (and with my complete agreement) is more than enough of a 12 episode series to give one a grasp of the show. Hence being eligible to vote on the title after watching 4/12 episodes. There have been exceptional occasions when I've felt that the minimum requirement mentioned for the series is not enough and in those cases I have either watched more of the series before discussions or haven't discussed the series at all. In this case I faced a series that after only 3 episodes I could tell how it ends. To confirm it not only I asked people who had watched it about the ending but also I bothered to check the last episode (I've watched 5 episodes of this show in total). Such a cliche show that leads me to guessing how things would end, doesn't need more of my time for me to realize how things are done. Remember this is a discussion about the quality of the anime not how individual characters live/die (that's for the character discussions). When dialogues of an anime are terribly done, cliche elements are to be found every minute, the music sounds out of place, characters are nothing new, jokes are cheesy and etc. watching 4 episodes is more than enough to figure these flaws for the eye of anyone who's watched more than 100 anime shows. Having these flaws is more than enough for an anime to fail to be induction worthy in my opinion.

I have no clue on how you got to the conclusion that I am basing my opinion on others'. The only thing I pointed out was asking a person who's watched the anime completely about how it ends to see whether I had guessed the ending right. And yes I was right (after only 3 episodes) and yes this show is that much of a cliche for me.

1. It's actually pretty sad that this is the you decide discussion board. I don't know who took the time to nominate this series, but it has become apparent that we are not going to get an in depth analysis of this show. Instead what we will apparently get is the minimum. If it was a series I thought deserved further defense I'd probably wall this forum up, but alas it's not.

I swear, everytime i look at your name, you remind me of that girl from Toaru Majutsu no Index. Besides that point, the friend thing may have been done over and over again, but it isn't executed poorly. I mean it doesn't have like 100 episodes of filler right?

(I think I'm writing about Naruto?) OK now all we need is throwing in some short skirts (high school uniforms) for satisfaction of otakus but if that's not enough how about being really cool and adding a bath scene and a kiss. OMG, MOE.

Well they are living together and they are Japanese. Japanese people bond by taking baths together?

Let's give him a cliche design even. So his hair is covering his eyes (mysterious enough eh?) and his hair is white, perfect.

I remember that kid, I hated him. Not sure what the cliche design is though.

Bottomline however, the series just lacks what it takes to be on the relation lists.

being known for its first episode is practically only the feat of this show.

I have some fragmented recollections of the show and I don't remember it to be nothing more than an average to mediocre action/drama flick. Although I would say it scores bonus point for being better than the manga.

And well turns out I actually commented on this thread, so I'll just quote myself again.
