I think; don't know how it develops later on though) Texhnolyze ... and mangas: Basilisk (I mean here the situation main characters are in) Freezing (lots of dying here) Great Teacher Onizuka (you should know from the anime) Kannazuki no Miko (rather sad story) Shin Angyo Onshi Shitsurakuen // edit: oh, and finish Kara no Kyoukai series. |

| Tsumiki no Ie - Not sure if it's what you are looking for, but the main character is certainly alone, it's 10 minutes long and as one the best anime I have seen yet, there's really no good reason not to watch it anyway. sometimes delves into this. Not particular often, but it's still an important theme. From what I have seen. [url=http://myanimelist.net/anime/1126/Figure_17]Figure 17 appears to delve into this as well, as Tsubasa is one lonely girl before the events at the end of the first episode. You may also want to pick up Key the Metal Idol from your PTW. I'm not sure how much it fits your requirements, but it's a dark anime overall and the main character is after 30,000 friends, so it has to fit to some degree, I suppose. |

| You could give Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan a try. It's short and pretty much dripping with depression. |
| BLAME!, Homunculus and Berserk all feature more or less lonely heroes. Hitsuji no Uta focus a lot on the loneliness of the main characters. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou has a lot of philosophical reflection with a hint of melancholy and loneliness. |
| I'd reccomend watching and reading the Welcome to the NHK anime and manga. |
| Bizenghast does a lot with this, though it's not Japanese-made manga |
