ok , so hear me out. this is not one of those clickbait discussion.
the characters in this show are actually piloting a shell (of flesh) and use it to fight and protect. this is actually pretty similar to another popular mecha (you know which one im talking about).
what do you think?

You are not the first to one to make that observation. If you also consider the emphasis on politics, mass destruction and the protagonist's dad having something to with all this you basically have steampunk Gundam 0079.

Nope it isn't. You can even see the same from the tags itself. Even on Anilist, it only includes Kaiju.

On the other hand, Eva actually has that Mecha tag and some Robot tags or something like that on Anilist.

I mean you can also argue that odm gear in a way is mech, after all it's described as a exo skeleton system.

maybe if it was bigger cause mecha are generally at least 2 times or more the size of the user.
also it doesn't makes for most of the outer shell, the user the big part of the outer shell.

Cool Point.
I wonder if there is a cooling mechanism in the flesh of the titans so you wouldn't get warm in their body...

Nope, there are no big guns or big blades that mecha has. And more importantly, no mechanical mechanisms.

The story and characters of AoT are written very similarly to Muv-Luv Alternative, a sci-fi VN. Shiganshina and Sadogashima operation are kinda similar. Eren and Takeru have a lot of similarities~

The Titans are more similar to tank-variant BETA instead of TSFs. I wonder if there are Titans that shoot lasers with aimbot accuracy? That will be interesting~

I would say it is honestly just because there not robots doesn't mean it's not a mecha like in the case of eva no one says it's not a mecha even though the mechs are actually organisms. Aot goes a step further obviously by not making the titans look robotics but still they seem to be controlled by titan users almost like a driver in a cockpit. plus there's all the military tech and shit also as previously mentioned Aot is clearly meant to have similar themes to other mecha

Yes. The entire story of AoT is heavily based off a mecha visual novel called Muv-Luv Alternative.

I've heard this take, but I can't say I agree. Mecha literally means mechanical. The titans bodies are made of flesh and bone, their organic.
Btw, what is the anime you're talking about?

I was about to make a comparison to one of today's most controversial topics, but I'll be banned if I do. Ever heard of the saying "if my grandmother had wheels, she would be a bike"? This is what it means.

Anyways, a "flesh mecha" is not a mecha. Just because there is one parallel doesn't mean that they are the same. The titans qualify more as appendices, they grow out of people after all, actual mechas don't.

Just stumbled upon someone's profile (not OP) a day or two ago where he similary stated that AOT is mecha and titan is just a giant robot made of flesh with people riding near the robot's head and controlling it.

Edit: oh, i actually took a screenshot of it:

evangelion. In evengalion the characters appear to be piloting big robots but as the story goes on you realize that they’re actually made out of people. Hasan (a youtuber) has made the same argument before.

It's not only that, the shifters are in some kind of control center in the titan, and the main plot is a war drama going into politics, which is typical for most mecha series. I mean ofc it was, what else do you need mechas / titans for.
And biomechas are a known subgenre of mecha.

That’s a good point but it feel like in aot they imitate mecha instead of actually being mecha. How is it gonna be a mecha without the mecha yknow?

Yes. The best mecha anime.

But seriously speaking, because it's flesh it should by defenition not be mecha, because, well, it isn't mechanical

No, the word "mecha" refers to machines. The titans are biological in nature.

no, i'd actually go as far as to say that evangelion is not a mecha, they are not the main focus nor are they mechs or mechanical, they are beings/beasts wearing armor and seals which limit their power, titans are simply giants, those who classify AOT as a mecha are missing the entire point of mecha, using mechs and robots and what is uniquely providable only by mechs and robots as tools to convey a message/theme, AOT and Evangelion do not have thag

this misses the point, mecha shows use elements which only mechas and robots can provide to tell a theme/message while entertaining the audience, AOT by virtue of not having anything mechanical let alone a robot/mech as a centerpeice for storytelling is not a mecha show, its like saying a show about tanks like Girls Und Panzer is a Mecha show, which nobody in their right mind would agree too, a mecha means humanoid and mechanical, not just humanoid, Kaiju are not mechas for that reason

exactly, Titans are not mechanical in any way, Evangelions barely pass because they have armored suits which contain seals and also have cybernetics in addition which dont even help the eva but rather actually keeps it under control and limited in power
