let me get to the point.

onizuka, as the name suggests, is great. he carried the show so hard and made every episode entertaining.

and i get the appeal of some of his lessons being very powerful, and i agree with the comedy being hilarious.

but, for a show this highly rated and highly praised that has stayed in the top rated series for years, i expected more.

very few of the side characters are inteteating. the only ones that i thought were special were the principal and that super smart girl. the rest of the side cast was just kinda eh.

the music outside the opening is just ok. and the animation isn't that special either.

it doesn't have any super stand out episodes, and the ending wasn't super satisfying. which makes sense since i'm pretty sure the manga went further and had a different ending.

i went to this expecting a better assassination classroom, but it wasn't really that.

it didn't have the problems of ass class, but it also lacked a lot of its qualities.

i give it this, the lessons were a lot more mature and better thought out, so i can see why its life chaning to a lot of people. but still.

idk..... it just seems like a thing that you would only sing its praise if the messages affected you personally. and i feel left out for that since it didn't have a huge impact on me.

I feel that one thing holding the anime in particular back was that it didn’t adapt the entire manga, which in certain shows’ cases adds to the feeling that something was missing. I would say this one could qualify for this. The experience of GTO was much more fulfilling after reading the manga. I’d say that is the way to go after watching the show.

Ig the balance dude, like I've seen the anime and read all the three mangas, and it's one of the most goofiest stuff I've ever read, at the same time tho it also brings out the serious moments quite well.

GTO is a genuine classic. Maybe you’re just still to little to truly appreciate it.

likes of you say "I expected more" like you can think any better. The show has nothing to complain and I don't understand likes of you.

most of the people who have this in their top 10, grew up with it....

so if anything if i was little, it should have affected me more.

i watched it like 2 years ago so i was 16.

I saw it 20+ years ago. I hadn't seen anything like it. It helped shape my taste in anime and overall entertainment. I like the characters and the comedy. You expected it to be better than Assassination Classroom, and feel it fell short. I saw Assassination Classroom and thought, "oh, it's like GTO if Onizuka had tentacles. Ok."
Ratings are subjective. They only tell you what other people think, not what you have to think.

there is plenty to complain about:

most of the side cast is uninteresting

the ending isn't satisfying

the production value isn't bad but it could have been much much better. specially the soundtrack.

I wouldn't say it really felt short they were pretty similar in quality to me. I just expected it to be better... that's where the problem came from.

like koro sensei is pretty much onizula with tentacles, you're absolutely right.

the way I see it:

ass class, had:

much better production, a better ending, and better side characters

but onizuka had:

better lessons, and unlike ass class had very few problems/plot holes/writing issues.

I guess you are right though. a massive factor is probably the fact that it came first. a lot of people do put value in something being the first to do a thing.

most of the people who have it as their favorite say they grew up with it. there isn't anything here that you even need to be a 40 year old to appreciate. if anything it probably affects you more by nature if you watch it when you're younger.

I was like 16 when I watched it....

I'm pretty sure it's not that.

I think it's mostly nostalgia. since very few people watch it nowadays, the rating is not going lower.

it's not really an elitist show. anyone can enjoy it.

hell despite this thread I really liked the series. I just thought it didn't reach the level of praise that some people put on it.

hmmm.... it was pretty hilarious.

but I don't think it's the best drama. don't get me wrong the drama isn't bad.... but you can't really say you haven't seen better. most of the arcs are pretty cheesy and predictable. onizuka hard carries them into being as good as they are.

it is very funny. but there are a good few shows that I thought were just as funny.

maybe it's because I find most types of comedy funny?

if this is the only comedy that made you laugh hard in years, yeah I can see why you would think it's this good.

I guess my down fall is finding most highly acclaimed comedies funny lol

it's a lot cleaner in terms of writing.

but the side characters, production value and ending of ass class do a lot of heavy lifting to make it match/surpass it.

ultimately they have different strengths. so I think which one being better mostly depends on who you ask.

I remember watching it when I was 15 and I didn't really like it, dropped it quite fast. Then six years later something made me give it another chance and then I really felt that. As goofy as it is, the way it portraits teens' problems and traumas and how Onizuka helped them in his naive and straightforward manner amazed me. What I love about this show is how it works with the idea of tagging people: this one is a genius, this one is a crybaby, this one is a bitch. Teachers, parents give tags to kids and call it a day. But most children are pretty messed up and vulnerable and need a supportive adult figure and very few adults realize that cuz they're too occupied with their own problems.
I wouldn't call this anime the best comedy but it's one of the best teens' psychology shows I've watched.

I think you’re being mostly fair about how the ending isn’t very good in the anime, and I’ll even concede that some of the side characters aren’t interesting, but I think most people love the soundtrack which contributes a ton to how impactful a show is.

It might boil down mostly to if you don’t like the style of music and the recurring themes, you won’t find the show special since you’re distracted by that.

Especially since the track that accompanies “watershed moments” in character development (it’s the one that’s gentle with xylophone carrying the melody) makes or in your viewing experience probably breaks the impact of those moments.

I think all shows rely heavily on soundtrack quality to stand out above the rest, that’s a big part of why people absolutely love Hunter Hunter, why people have so much nostalgia for Dragon Ball and Naruto, and why some underviewed shows like Oddtaxi or Kaiba end up getting more exposure over time.

For what it’s worth, I think it’s actually better to watch GTO out of high school, whether that means before or after. I watched it last year at 20 y.o., and a large part of my enjoyment was reflecting on the difficult and awkward moments I had in high school and imagining how much different a lot of experiences would be with an Onizuka figure giving me the confidence to be myself. It’s very much a bittersweet show to watch, but in my eyes in a very kind-hearted way.

I think the best thing this show does is be imperfect, things don't always go how you expect and he doesn't go by the book in allot of ways that feel like it makes sense.

I think it's just the sentimentality of the whole thing.

On a technical level it's nothing special. On a story level, it's pretty simple - teacher gets to know the students and helps them out with life lessons.

But all in all it just makes me feel good to watch. It's funny, Onizuka is a likable guy, it doesn't take itself too seriously without being too over-the-top, and I actually really enjoy all of the soundtrack.

Plus, as a bonus, it's just a huge blast of nostalgia to watch - the versions available to stream seem to be overly compressed, taking me back to pre-HD days.
