Original is about a specific person and that person is built up brick by brick to the point where when it's over you have a good idea of who he was and why he lived such a miserable life. I like these characters who are honestly bad people yet still evoke empathy due to how their personality was formed. Novel this and on top of that was just the sheer journey through a pretty unusual life which is interesting by itself. The manga is extremely stripped down though, so even if it had more flare to it and a smoother pace, it lacked things that made me click with the original. By painting the character with broad strokes he became less of a person and more of a generic protagonist, someone for the reader to relate to and feel sorry about. Similarly, his path to the end became an exaggerated, almost "we live in a society" tier narrative. It's short and sweet but I don't see anything notable about it aside from expressive art. |
