| All very entertaining fun stories in this volume. 7/10. An easy favorite. From melted children turned ice cream by a mysterious man's ice cream truck. Rival Club spirits possessing a girl's two friends, leading her to get her head and feet pulled by the spirits to join either side in-between a blocked entrance that connects the clubs. Cigarettes grown with ash of cremation, inducing the taste and feel of "darkness", death. A black smoke that breathes out from the eyes. A Ghost record of an inspiring singer who sung before she died from injury of a car accident, leading anyone who wields it to die and sing her song as corpses, while it causes others to unintentionally kill from craving to own the record. A young man who's doppleganger in his dreams wishes to come out into the real world through his skin from the inside out. Until the man is unable to stay awake, the doppleganger succeeds, while pulling the heroine into the dream world also. A dangerous businessman who gets hypnotized creates stone carved avatars of himself imbueding his soul which also hypnotized his abused son to keep distributing these dolls to everyone as a gift for happiness. Finally, a puppeteer family who's dad dies, with the oldest son's belief of his father being the puppet against the actual puppet turns true. After escaping, the puppet influenced the oldest and his family to be literally wielded and become like puppets living their life. Until his little brother reunites with him, his now girlfriend meets the puppet she threw out of fear, that is when we learn that that puppet is the puppet master. The boy's girlfriend is left dead, and his big brother is realized to be a puppet. ... Fascinating stories. Junji Itou's range of dynamics ideas are really incredible. I feel like there's some hidden or subtle folklore/mythological meaning that I'm unaware of, but I wish some of the stories had answers to their mystery for how extremely intriguing they are. The last one stands out a lot from its beautiful aesthetic of a man-made mansion made to wield humans like puppets. Den of the Sleep Demon is awesome as well though. |
