I would like everyone to approach this thread as if you were going to write a review and structure your initial post like this: Art - insert rating Characters - insert rating Story - insert rating Enjoyment - insert rating Art - discuss any pros and cons of the art styling used in the series, try to include some specifics. Character - describe any of the things you liked or didn't care for in regards to specific characters in the series etc... If you are having trouble writing up a review or coming up with specific pros and cons, please don't worry. Just do the best you can with it and if you can only write two or three sentences about any of the 4 elements then that's OK. Not everyone here is currently at a level which will allow them to articulate their thoughts and opinions. After your initial post is made you can feel free to civilly discuss issues of contention. I am sure there will be many opinions expressed here that some of us will disagree upon and criticise and it is for that reason that this entire club exists. So I hope everyone has fun and I am really looking forward to seeing how this discussion will develop. | If I had to compare this manga with something, I'd pick a Hieronymus Bosch painting. Each of the individual components of Ichi the Killer is loathsome in its own fashion, but the total picture is farcical, almost absurd. The entirety of this manga seems to consist of violence of different kinds, sex and every possible combination of the two. Apart from being an exposé on how much of this can be crammed inside 10 volumes, as a whole it ends up being utterly pointless: the exact same story, a few men kill each other in as splatter-y a fashion as possible, could have been told in about a page or two. Oh, undoubtedly, if one feels the need to, it is possible to construct an entire analysis report on the psyche of most of the characters, in particular Ichi's own delusions, just like one could find the answer to Faust's question in any of the Bosch paintings. Yet it all is used exclusively to add some token of originality to the characters, who are otherwise nothing more than simple thugs, and add another layer of nonsensical desires for violence. If it were intended to be more, more would have been done with it. To its merit, this manga is a very quick read. It doesn't reflect for overly long on what happens - as none of that is needed - and just gets on with the story. Many of the pages can be flipped through rapidly, devoid of text as they are and not meriting any closer look, making it easy to finish the manga within an hour or two. The art was nice, though probably not to anyone's liking, and went for the relatively realistic look, yet exaggerating some features to the point of distortion, emphasising the insanity of the cast. At least, and many action manga can learn from this, it was always fully clear what was going on: even in action scenes there is no clutter of limbs or swashes of what is probably quick movement. Daisuki-chan in her post above summarises this manga very well, as there really is nothing beyond that. As said, I don't see the point of this one and will probably vote 'No'. |
