Metal is probably the kind of music with the most genres. (I may be wrong but at least there are a fucking lot of them).

You are only allowed to vote for one genre so please vote for the one you like most and post the rest in this topic.
If you like include some bands you like most and a reason why you like the genre or how you got to like the music.

And remember: There is now false or true / good or bad metal so please don't flame or behave like some hip-hop kids (I say this cause I already saw it some times like that)

Yes I know, that there is some stuff up there, which shouldn't be, but you'll have to bear with it, as MAL doesn't come with a method to delete the options, once added.
This was just to get some general overview and start a topic to discuss this matter.

Black-, Death-, Powermetal

i never heard christian-/whitemetal - what's this?
Oh, pitiful shadow cloaked in darkness.
Thy actions cause men pain and suffering.
Thy hollow soul drowns in thy sins.
How would you like to see what death is like?

It's hard to decide on just one genre, however out of these I like death metal the most. In Flames got me into metal at first and a friend of mine introduced me to bands like Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Bloodbath, Deicide and Nile. Early Hypocrisy had a great death metal sound which I like a lot. I've had trouble finding new good death metal bands so nowadays I mostly listen to black metal and melodic death metal.

Other metal sub-genres I listen to:
Only listing the bands I listen to the most.

Black metal
Avant-garde black metal - (Diabolical Masquerade, etc.)
Symphonic death metal - (Dimmu Borgir)
Doom metal - (Katatonia, My Dying Bride, etc.)
Death/Doom metal - (Novembers Doom)
Melodic Death metal - (Hypocrisy, In Flames, Zonaria, At The Gates, etc.)
Viking metal - (Amon Amarth, etc.)
Power metal - (Nightwish, etc.)
Pagan metal - (Radigost)
Progressive death metal - (Opeth)
Thrash metal - (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Sepultura, etc.)

well melodeath is very popular and is quite different than usual death metal (and usual death metal is mosty the 'brutal death metal")
Or am I wrong here?

Brutal Death:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yu_B2pnOJE
Technical Death:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZJC7vdqzRA&feature=related
Goregrind:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYL7wCgMsZg

far more different than the trio od viking, pagan, and folk metal

DOOM. It's the way forward I tell you!
Also like a dose of near enough every other genre there, with the exception of nu-metal (although I have no idea what this 'fun metal' is...)
And yeah, I class christian metal to be bands such as Jacobs Dream, Lo-Ruhamah and near enough every band under the Bombworks Records label. Some of it is rather good, since all they're really doing is singing about the holy rather than the unholy, and its good either way.

White metal is the polar opposite of black metal.

I've been into doom heavily lately, so thats what I voted for.

Witchfinder General, Neurosis, Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Black Sabbath, Eyehategod, Weedeater, Electric Wizard, Reverend Bizarre, and a ton more. All bands that are doom. Of course, Eyehategod and Weedeater are sludge but sludge is just hardcore mixed with doom.

Metalcore and melodic death metal for me. I dunno, I just like a really technical guitar and a good vocalist. These sub-genres tend to deliver on both aspects.

Death Metal (Bands like: Death, Morbid Angel, Vader)
Progressive Metal (Bands like: Opeth, Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Disillusion)
Black Metal (Bands like: Emperor, Diabolical Masquerade, Summoning, Burzum, Mayhem) -edit- I'm idiot. Ildjarn belongs also in this list!!
and Thrash Metal (Bands like: Sodom, Megadeth, Death Angel, Slayer)
have always been close to my heart.

I voted Funk-Metal, because I am totally in love with the band Rage Against the Machine, they are probably one of my favorite bands ever.
If I could vote more than once I would have also voted for Industrial metal since my other favorite bands are Fear Factory and Static X.
All of those genres of metal are good.

What exactly is "post-metal"? A blend of metal and indie?

To answer the poll. . .I don't think I have a favorite. At various times I get into various genres, but most of the time my fandom of any given genre boils down to one band (e.g. Blind Guardian, In Flames, Dissolution).

No technical metal?

A bit of a tossup between progressive, doom, and death, with melodeath and metalcore at a close second.

In other words, I honestly don't know.

Progressive Metal, by a landslide.

Because over-the-top composition, 343/65464534 time signatures, lightspeed solos, and 45 minute songs are awesome.

Some of my favourite bands:

Dream Theater
Fates Warning
Spastic Ink
Andromeda
Symphony X
Into Eternity
Gordian Knot
Opeth
Annihilator
Watchtower

etc.etc.etc.

I could go on forever.
