The story
In Junior High Honami and his first love Terumi used to give each other hand jobs in a hot stuffy room at the gas station. But Terumi couldn't decide to be with Honami properly and in the end they never confessed and never even kissed. Now Honami is in love with his class mate Shouji and gets to finally enjoy a real relationship and sex life. But when he tells Shouji about his past, Shouji wants to see what his lovers' first love is like and meets Terumi. And now there's an attraction sizzling between Honami's ex-lover and his current lover. No matter what - in this love triangle somebody will get hurt.

The review
Enough with the serious stories, deep characters and plots that make you feel all nostalgic inside - time to get a bit more intimate here! Now that we have had the featured special read for a while I feel finally up for featuring something for the pervs here into whose ranks I include myself. Because today I give you Mukizu ja irarenee by Sadahiro Mika - the censors would like to have a field day with something like this and all our aunties would go "Oh Shocking!" while secretly trying to get a good look at some of the boycandy. So turn down your heater, get your fan ready and let's talk about hot boys engaging in unrestrained forms of bedroom combat.

The first thing to mention about Sadahiro Mika's art is that she has an enormous cast of unbelievable eyecandy. That is also really true for Mukizu ja irarenee. These boys are good looking; really sexy, toned bodies, well cut faces, firm, perfectly shaped buttocks and typical Sadahiro Mika lips that always look like freshly botoxed. She makes a point to show her boys in flattering pin-up poses too, so even if you don't fall for the story, at least your eyes will have a good time reading this. Her art is good, but it is not what you will remembering this story for.

Sadahiro Mika is a Mangaka known for steamy horizontal action, for explicit or hard yaoi that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination and wants to shock you out off your pants. And that is just how her fans like her. Her characters are primarily gorgeous hunks and all you can be sure about with their characters is that they have absolutely no moral limitations, no hesitation to taboo-breaking and never try to act against the nature of a hormonal high tide. The main cast in Mukizu ja irarenee are all 16 at the beginning of this and despite this relatively tender age have a sex life more active than some hollywood stars.

This sounds all a bit degrading maybe like the mangaka only makes a sorry excuse for drawing some porn, but I personally don't think so. I really believe she should be applauded. She is a master of the secret technique of stringing one sex scene after the other and actually telling a story this way - she even manages to develop characters and convey emotions - well nothing that will ever be mentioned in high literature discussions, but still surprising for a story that would collapse if you took the sex scenes out.

One of her ways of doing that is that her characters often talk during sex, it's either the really dirty sex language or words of love or a sentence of jealousy - she even uses the sex scenes to get a message to the reader and be it that theses two are really having some serious fun here. In Mukizu ja irarenee her other secret to convey emotions is that she lets us see inside Shouji's head and we hear his thoughts commenting every scene. This is how despite existing mostly of sex scenes all kind of feelings like angst, jealousy, despair, hurt and of course love get across to the reader. In Mukizu ja irarenee I found it surprising how much I wanted to see Shouji end up with Terumi and how much I thought that Honami was just in the way, when of course in reality he is the primary victim and all later hurt comes from his backlash against his lover and his best friend who have been getting it on with each other. I have usually better morals, I assure you, but the mangaka swept me away. Instead of thinking how tragic it was that Honami was betrayed, I ended up thinking how tragic it was for Shouji to fall for Terumi and started to make up excuses for him in my head. This partiality I believe stems from the story taking mostly place from Shouji's point of view. Somewhere in my head I was at the same time aware of the injustice of my favouring. What I really liked about this manga was the end - it had full closure without painting the future too pink. It showed that couples still argue but that it does not mean they don't love each other. Besides every one of the main cast would probably have agreed that he ended up with a "Happy End" which is not a bad achievement for a love triangle.

The plot and the characters are a lot detached from all live that doesn't have to do with the relationship of these three boys. We don't even get to see any of the families of the characters, there's exactly one tiny scene that happens at the high school and no outside characters appear that don't somehow get involved in the main plotline. Actually apart from the three main characters Shouji, Terumi and Honami there is only one other real character, Han, who gets his own little part in the story ... which with Sadahiro Mika means of course that he gets to exchange some body fluids somewhere along the plotline. Every other figure in the story who makes a split-second appearance is just a name-less part of the scenery. This detachment from outside "normal" life lets the story appear less realistic, but I guess that realism was probably never what the author intended for. I believe she wants to create entertainment and if watching hot boys having uninhibited sex is your kind of thing even without the literature award and critic acclaims than you should really give her stories a try.

Original art by Sadahiro Mika, Club graphics by zetsuboshita

Sadly an english translation scheduled by DGM under the title of "Can't help gettin' hurt" never actually made it into print. Maybe they feared that it was too steamy?

I read this one a few months ago and i'm pretty sure i really liked it. It is very graphic but there's nothing wrong with that when it also still has an interesting story.

I think it's time for a second reading since my memory is a little hazy on the details. It's definitely worth a read.

i read this not very long ago, so the graphic sexiness and all other things are still fresh.
i liked the story, i felt drawn in, pondering over every move those boys made, i felt sad, then happy, and in the end i was glad.
this story landed with an 8 in my list.
Sadahiro Mika is one of my favorite mangakas, because I'm the 'hard yaoi' loving girl and her art and situations are just brilliant IMO. so I've read very many of her works, and intend to read them all, when the mood comes time after time.

P.S. Geisha's description is really great! ^^

Nice review Geisha! I was laughing at one of those quotes XD.
Sexy and lewd would be the perfect words for this manga, I know there are a lot of explicit stories around but I usually don't feel like reading more after a few pages. Then there are some exceptions or special cases, like this manga, where the sex is a mean to tell a story; wonderful way to put some perverted things on display without the ugly feeling that you could be reading plain porn.
Sadahiro Mika has such a sexy art, somehow it reminds me of Youka Nitta's one, but leaning more towards the manly part than the beutiful one; they both give off a similar feeling but you don't usually think that Nika's guys are hunks!. Strangely enough both of them have some horrible colored covers/art, so this is one of those cases where the black/white drawings are way better than the colored ones, well, zetsuboshita made a great job coloring her pictures for you guys! it looks really nice.

It was time to turn up the pervertedness here! We have been saints so far XD!

I've heard so much about this mangaka, but never tried one of her mangas actually, the art looks good just as I like it, plus the reversi thing, I must say that I am more than interested, I'll read it then give you my personal opinion about this manga. Thanks for featuring this =)

I hadn't read much of Sadahiro Mika until I joined this club, but I've been seeking her out more and more. Like already said, how Geisha talks about it makes me want to read it. This is one I haven't read yet and I'll have to remedy that. I agree about her art--itis unabashedly naughty and sexy and full of statuesque guys. No shapeless, undefined bodies here. I'm glad we're featuring something a little smuttier.. it's only appropriate in this club. :D I enjoyed reading up until the first steamy pic.. I'll read the rest after I've read the manga.

When someone says reversi couple the first that comes to my mind is this one (and they are reversi, not like it happens only once like in most mangas with reversi couples). And when it is Sadahiro Mika's work the first one I remember is this one too. So I am really happy, that this was featured.
I like it and re-read it many times. It has story with strong emotions even though it seems there is too much sex for that. The sex scenes are hot and the drawing is nice (I had to laugh when Geisha described their lips, that they look like freshly botoxed - I agree but sometimes it is annoying).

I would definitely agree with that. In fact I'm almost surprised if something is really graphic and still manages to have any kind of story. If that story still something that I raises my interest I'm almost overwhelmed. :) I do believe the graphic stuff has a natural place in this genre.

She's a favourite of mine as well. I like her unfluffiness, the way she paints love and sex without the pink tinted glasses that usually comes along with romances. I guess that is exactly what I appreciate in hard yaoi.

I can make an educated guess as to which quote you referring to. :)

Ey, Nitta Youka? I would never have made that comparison, but now that you mention... Unfluffiness ... check! ... boycandy ... check! .... breaking stereotypes .... check! ... yes, I guess there are some parallels. I don't dislike Nitta's coloured art so much how ever. Sadahiro's coloured art ... hmh, not sure, some are good, some are not, but I would agree that her b/w pages come across better. Maybe she should leave the colouring in zetsu's capable hands :)

Yeah, we have been saints, that's right. But I guess I clipped one of my wings with this one ...

Yeah, shame or modesty seem to be words that are not in her dictionary. And stories like that are forming an important part of this genre.

Yes, I'd say Sadahiro Mika is the Reversi-Queen. Her characters are reversing in the most natural way, not this "Let's try this once but never again", not this "I was T-kuns seme but for you I'll throw my uke-self at your feet" and not this "Years ago I was young and you did me, we meet again but I've grown up and from now on the bottom is your place". It's a reversing back and fourth, because they like it. (Though in the story there is a certain limitation to the reversing, I don't want to spoil it here for the people who haven't read the manga yet). I find this position-changing according to the mood so refreshing, because it seems more realistic. I know there are gays who are born an uke and die an uke and I won't claim to have researched this with empirical data but reversing seems a frequent occurency in real gay life ... but a rare treat in mangas even with it adding such a good new plot aspect.... I don't really understand why it is not used more often.
Ah, the Sadahiro Mika-lips.... yeah, I agree I think it's sexy many times but occassionaly she overdoes it and it looks like pig-snouts. And she has her own style of buttocks as well - I wonder if I could recognize a pair of her buttocks from a line-up? ;)

I've completed about 6 or 7 of Sadahiro Mika's manga titles - and as much as I've tried, I can't seem to bring myself to like her work. Her boys look so smug, it's annoying; they have that, 'I look hot and I know it' look, which I absolutely loathe in art or real people. And like Geisha mentions, Mika's characters seem to know no moral limitations - and that drives me crazy, too.
Her sex scenes are, erm, lewd, but not quite so sexy; or maybe it's the characters' expressions, so they just seem to be in lust and I wonder where the love is. Maybe it's just me being a prude, though -_-" (Yes, a prudish yaoi fan. Go figure :P)

Having said that, this manga moved me while reading. It got really frustrating because I found myself supporting the cheating partner - can't remember the names, even after reading the review, sorry Geisha - and hating him at the same time. I didn't particularly like the non-cheating partner, either, so that helped - or made it worse. See, this is how Mika's works usually leave me. With the exception of the police stories (Buddy System, XL) which I downright hated, her other works seem to leave me, "Eh, I'm not sure if I like it." This is certainly my favourite work of hers, though.

All in all, great review :) Oh, I've noticed that the reviews for the special reads are no longer posted in the actual manga page. Any reason for that?

Thanks for your opinion. I thought it quite embarrassing as well that I rooted for Shouji and Terumi when in fact it feels to betray all believe in justice to support them. But I thought that way of making me go against my inner nature shows that the artist gets Shoujis point over sio well, that I can really live inside his head. It's not like she leaves all that guilt of cheating away, it's there and makes the two feel miserable and also ... I think Terumi says that ... it makes it more exciting for them. I thought it was one of the few points in that manga that were actually feeling real.

The characters are vain, you are right and I believe in rl I might dislike them for it, but oddly in the manga I find this refreshing. I'm a bit sick of the ukes (and seme occassionally too) who don't believe that the partner could find them sexually attractive and doubt themselves in that way constantly. It's not that I like the vanity, I just thought it a new and different angle ... and really, I like it when the uke is self-confident or even haughty and knows absolutely that he is seductive - I don't see many like those ...

Erm, I think the reason they are not in the actual review manga page is that I simply forgot :) I'll post them there one day. Especially this one as I find the review that's there is so much a of a bashing that I have to provide a different angle.

Glad you didn't think it a total waste of time :)

If you want to read any other of her works I would like to suggest "Undergrand Hotel", a 3-volume prison story hard yaoi and DGM just bought the rights for the english translation as well.

Thanks for doing the graphcis for the review. :) Terumi looks totally yummy. Makes me understand why Shouji can't leave his paws off him.

ahh..alas justice for the manga. The review on the manga page was quite immature and poorly though out, thanks geisha for shedding some spotlight on this manga. ^_^ I read this last year but I remembered passing through it countless times, having second thoughts about reading it, and just was too lazy to read. But I must say it was not as frustrating as hydra, there's sex.... plenty of them. The mangaka was not actually on one of my favorites since she focuses a lot on slice of life, I already have my dose of it everyday, why do I still have to encounter it on my fantasy world [which is my yaoi time]. Though her work were nice things to pass the time considering I got to see some threesome action xD. I think I just haven't read all the good stuff that she made that's why I don't see einstein in her xD I will look forward in reading Undergrand Hotel since it's being recommended lately (by the invisible geisha who only shows her presence in forums now-a-days =.=) It was not horrible but it was not a masterpiece. I gave it a nice 8 ^_^ very good! *stamps a star on the manga* (I feel like a kindergarten teacher now)

Well, I don't know about the immature part, everyone must of course be entitled to their own point of view. I just thought that I ought to provide a different one.
You write that you think Sadahiro's Mangas too slice of life. I can't agree with that. Well, not for the most part anyway. They have some angst or some have some drama, but in my opinion they don't really have much to do with actual life. If you look at these boys, no matter how much I like the manga, I don't see actual people. They are fantasy creatures. Nice to watch, I'd say, interesting to read about but not like real life. In real life this story would probably not have gone quite like this ... I don't see Einsteiin her either :), but she has a unique way with her art and storytelling and if shamelessly explicit or hardcore with a bit of drama/angsty story is wanted she would be first on my list to mention.

I've finished reading this and I was rather neutral about it. Tbh, I found UGH kind of better (although I didn't like that much either). What I do agree about with the review is how there is substance under the sex scenes, and that it isn't all about the sex (although a huge part of it is, lol).

I didn't like the threesome in particular :| And also how Honami's new lover (after Terumi and Shouji got together) seemed like a deus-ex-machina character to me.

Still, it was worth reading :D

I think you must be reading. Because it's different from most of the yaoi series and a good drawing style.. etc. Just these two would make you read.

I don't remember, when I read this one but surely one thing i remember, that's the "interesting" story line. Maybe that's because I don't used to read something like that, and I actually though "what a weird story, how could it be?" but my curiosity couldn't leave me and I read all the story.
