At what stage have you evolved from a casual to a full-fledged elitist? I'm curious. I've been watching anime for more than 6 years, yet I can't wrap my mind around the fact some people have seen more than 500/600+ anime. Though I get annoyed by people that scream that SAO and Tokyo Ghoul are the best anime ever created, however I wouldn't consider myself an elitist.

So, what makes someone a casual and what makes someone an elitist?

When Naruto/Bleach/One Piece/Fairy Tail is no longer the "best anymay evuh"

But tbh, there's no exact definition for a casual. A casual's just someone who doesn't know much about the anime culture/anime community.

Why are you grouping casual with elitist? They're 2 entirely different things.

You can be a casual elitist.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

Casual: Someone who casually watches shit
>mostly mainstream, but doesn't have to be
>doesn't watch it OFTEN, can marathon shows but doesn't watch anime daily
>forms generalized opinion on anime based on what little they've seen

I'm not an elitist either, so I can't claim to know what kind of breed they are

Casual anime fan:
-Fairy Tail/One Piece/Naruto/Bleach/SAO/Tokyo Ghoul = Best anime ever
-Have not watched underrated anime shows and only watched mainstream shows
-Does not care about the show's story
-This loser claims he has seen it in all when in fact, he only has seen 10 anime shows.

Elitist anime fan:
-"My opinion is better than yours because I'm a goddamn loser"
-"I have watched over 1000 anime, hurr durr"
- Rates 95% of the anime shows out there with a score of 4 and below.
-It's impossible for them to just sit, relax and watch the anime shows
- They have no life

Me...I'm either a casual anime fan or in between. NO way in hell I'm an elitist though.

There's actually a table that sums up how much of a casual/elitist you are based on your favorite color.
It looked pretty legit and reliable. Look it up.

The new flood of casuals will come in sooner of later going all "PLS REACT 2 BEST ANIMU EVAH SERAPH OF DA ENDO". Sooner or later, SnK and TG and SAO will be phased out for newer, dumber anime ;3

I find it kinda weird that elitists hate/disregard everyone else's opinions on stuff like SnK or whatever, but are constantly cramming their opinions down ours

I consider myself a casual, but none of that applies to me.

Elitist or casual, I hate when people use the argument "you have *insert anime that the given person dislikes* in your favorites, your opinion is shit".

I respect your opinion as long as you respect mine.

You're a casual if you haven't watched many anime, but the ones that you have watched are popular "mainstream" animes with a lot of advertising in the West.

You're an elitist when you have significant knowledge of the anime industry and Japanese culture, are capable of breaking down an anime and determining the level of skill put into various aspects of an anime, how it affects the watcher, and how it compares to other animes with similar genres and production dates in the industry, AND you use your accumulated wealth of knowledge to bully casuals.

Not having these qualifications and still bullying casuals just means you're a troll. (Or, if you actually believe your taste is better, then you're just an idiot).

A casual is someone who cares nothing about the medium and just watch anime for entertainment.

When you develope a certain level of criteria and start judging an anime on quality, then you stop being a casual.

1- When they have watched like 10 shows and consider them "the best anime" with no discussion.
2- When they confuse demographics with genres.
3- When they don't know what a 1-10 rating system means.

Having an awful anime like Toyko Ghoul is having shit taste, not being casual. Imho

Sounds like being a casual is pretty ill-treated here.

Based on the definitions here, I don't think I am casual or elitist which I am glad. The amount of anime I watched were more than mainstream ones, and I watched a lot in one sitting. I never really criticize other people's opinion.

Nice, kou shuurei in your favourite.

Casual are just peoples who watch casually. IE, not often, and mostly irregularly. For example, I watch very few shows a year, I haven't even watched one episode of anime since more than one month and half. Sometimes I may watch a series in one go though, but at the end of the year, the number I've watched is quite low. I'm over 400 anime entry watched but that's over 20 years, and this includes obviously OVA and movies, like anyone else.
So I'm watching anime casually. So I'm a casual.

Notice that at no moment there is anything related to taste, to mainstream, or whatever. In other words, almost all the answer above are completely wrong. And notice that you can, as someone else pointed out before me in this thread, be an "elitist" AND a casual very easily. Elitist is all about the attitude you have toward the media and others fans. The moment you think you have "superior taste" and start looking down on things that you are persuaded to be "bad" as well as looking down on opinions of any person who like those, you're on your way to be an elitist.

Notice then that Elitist is basically a bad thing from others point of view, whereas being a casual is completely neutral on that point, since it's just the rate at witch you're watching anime. It doesn't even mean that you watched less anime than others, since you may have started far before those peoples watching a lot by year, effectively having watched more than them as a whole.
