I'm looking for a strong story with a strong ending

I've lately had a hard time finding an anime that really had a strong story. Many anime seem to begin as a very interesting and intriguing concept that never quite develop a well thought out ending (in my personal experience). I've watched a lot of anime from the past 5 years or so, so maybe something from 2000-2010! I haven't finished my list yet but I would appreciate some feedback.

Something with action/fantasy type stories are preferred, however I enjoy Romance. Also would prefer if said story didn't contain much comedy if any! :)
