I would say it's so unpopular because of its genre. I don't think that
Yuri has a big fanbase.

I think that you've hit the nail right on the head.

Anime series where they throw in slapstick Yuri can be very popular, such as the
very successful "YuruYuri" (2011,2012). Leaving out any character development
while having beautiful animation of highschool girls swapping spit seems to have
made "Sakura Trick" (2013) a success. "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" series and
"Slice of Life" very often throw in a little girl-on-girl romantic subtext just to keep
things spicy. This was one of the subplots of "Non Non Biyori" (2013). People
who classify Yuri anime, manga and novels sometimes label this kind of Yuri as
"Secondary-element Yuri".

It is no insult, by the way. Some examples of classic series which are labeled as
"Secondary-element Yuri" are "Sailor Moon" (1992), "Azumanga Daioh" (2002)
and "Madoka" (2011). As well, "The Rose of Versailles" (1979) is a 40-episode
early classic that "Utena" fans might want to have a look at.

As for Yuri stories where there is serious character development which is the
main focus of the story? This can be called "Central-element Yuri". The sad truth
is that nobody has made much money since "Maria-sama ga Miteru", which had
four seasons going from 2004 to early 2009. They also made an awesome live
action movie in 2010. Apart from "Simoun" (2006) and "Strawberry Panic" (2006),
every other series was single-cour. Also, the two Central-element Yuri series at
the end of 2009, "Aoi Hana" and "Sasameki Koto", crashed and burned in terms
of DVD sales. After that, they simply stopped making more Central-element Yuri.

Until now.

Given that "Yurikuma" has been such a dismal business failure, I now think that
everybody should give up hoping for more Central-element Yuri anime series and
go back to your manga and novels.

I don't know when YKA was called "incomprehensible".

To be fair, DMM News called it the most incomprehensible series of this cour.
Compared to Yurikuma, most other series are simple and straightforward.
None of the other anime series that I have watched recently require any
thought whatsoever. I just turn my brain off and then turn my computer on.

I believe that shows like Yuri Kuma require some time to be
appreciated or acknowledged because it requires more than
what you see to grasp it, and it can become an issue if you
watch it on the television.

That sounds like another very simple and therefore very likely explanation.

@Xenocrisi:

Thanks! Those look great. I can't wait until Monday.

There's a bonus song on the OP Single CD for the show called "I Met a Bear" and it's driving me crazy because I know I've heard the tune somewhere. The lyrics are different, but the tune and melody are so familiar, and I just can't remember where I've heard it before.

I tried looking for it myself, but as far as I know there's not anything like Google (image) search for music. I did find a website called midomi where you can apparently hum or sing into your computer's microphone, and it can use that to look for a song, but it requires allowing the website to access your computer's microphone and camera, so I'm really hesitant to use it. I also found a website where you can tap out the melody using the space bar, and I tried that, but it didn't work (as in, the website kept giving me an error message even though I tried about half a dozen times).

If anyone knows the name of the song, or another way I might be able to look for it, please share. Thanks!

@Sejin:

As far as I can tell, the song that they are singing really is called "I met a bear".
On the Yurikuma CD, they credit the lyrics and melody to "traditional", but the
arrangement was done by Bonjour Suzuki, who also sang the OP.

It is an old Boy Scout song. The very nearly precise version of the lyrics that they
are singing is here...

http://www.boyscouttrail.com/content/song/i_met_a_bear-37.asp

...except that the Yurikuma version omits the 4th verse of the Boy Scout version,
which says:

I says to him,
'That's a good idea.'
'Now legs get going,
get me out of here!'

The reason why you may have come across a different version of the lyrics is
because the Boy Scout version is much too scary. So I think that they have less
violent and nightmare-inducing versions that are appropriate for young children
to sing.

For those people who really actually want sheet music, these people will sell
it to you together with the CD, however it is only available to school teachers
who happen to live in New York State, USA:
http://www.gvlibraries.org/find?tid=9648
http://www.gvlibraries.org/content/get-kids-singing-old-favorites
http://www.gvlibraries.org/content/get-kids-singing-old-favorites-0
http://www.gvlibraries.org/contact

Apart from that, the best way to learn the melody might be to join the Boy Scouts.

There seems to be a snippet of the melody in the "Charlie Kane" song in Citizen
Kane, but the words they sing are totally different. Apparently, it is such an old
traditional American folk melody that nobody remembers where it came from.

Sejin asked:
How did you find it?

After seeing that the official website credited it as "traditional", first I
searched for snippets of the lyrics the girls were singing and after that
I ended up searching for "I met a bear" and finally I looked specifically
at places offering the lyrics.

Fortune favors those who Google.

Sejin also said:

I wonder where you learned it. Apparently, that is the most pornographic
of all of the versions. Hopefully it wasn't in Boy Scouts.. .;)

As of 25 hours ago, Yuri Kuma Arashi has a new official Twitter account:
http://twitter.com/yurikuma_TV

Here is their original official Twitter account which is still suspended:
http://twitter.com/yurikuma_anime

The very first tweet that they sent out says that their original Twitter account
underwent judgement as a result of some kind of Elimination Ceremony. Next,
they say that the Invisible Storm is scary. They say "gau". The tweet ends with
this symbol which is a crude drawing of a bear, I guess:
~(๑•﹏•)

Their second tweet is about Valentine's day.

The third tweet announces that the OP and the "I met a bear" song are on
iTunes.

The fourth tweet is a retweet announcing a character song titled 「森のくまさん」 ,
which roughly means "The bear in the forest". This is Bonjour Suzuki's first
single in his career, apparently. But I'm not quite clear about specifically what
song they are talking about.

The fifth tweet announces a special bear-themed cake available at the Honey
Toast Cafe until March 8th.

The sixth tweet is about Volume 1 of the Blu-ray and DVD which goes on sale
on March 25th.

Finally, the seventh tweet says that their original Twitter account remains frozen
and is a goner. They add, "What can we do?" The tweet includes this bear-face:
。゚(゚´Д`゚)゚。

So, that brings you up to date, as of this moment.

This episode completely mindfucked me. My brain still hurts. I love this show so much.
So Ginko DIDN'T kill Sumiko? Thank god.

As for the moon girl x forest girl story, I was thinking that Ginko was the forest girl and Kureha's mother was the moon girl, and when they were facing the mirror, Ginko smashed the mirror to get to the moon girl, but accidentally killing her. Which is why they said Kureha's mother was killed by a bear, and why Ginko had the pendant, and why the headmistress knows that Ginko is a bear because of the pendant? I don't know. I'm all jumbled up right now.

Quality anime A+++ I'm saddened by the scores of ignorant people who don't "get" it.

For those of you who are desperate to see Episode 7, there may be a hint in a
tweet that was sent out 3 hours ago from their (new) official twitter account.
However, there is no explanation about this image. It may be a still image from
from Episode 7 (as I suspect), or it might not be. Warning, there might be a
plot spoiler. You have been warned.

Link to the actual tweet (warning, possible spoiler)

Link to the same image in that tweet (warning, possible spoiler)

Besides that, Xenocrisi has already mentioned the four still images from
Episode 7 which were posted on the official website a few days ago. These
are definitely from Episode 7, and (warning) may well contain plot spoilers.
http://yurikuma.jp/story.html

Finally, as Xenocrisi already pointed out, the title of Episode 7 translates very
roughly as . . .

Just five hours left to go until it airs on TOKYO MX at 12:30 am Tokyo time!

Some people don't find it impressive, interesting or attractive. Recently I've talked about this anime with a homossexual friend and he said it was just another show to elect waifus, something that contains as little content as anything else and thought it was a waste of time.

The episode is finished airing in Tokyo as of half an hour ago. While we are waiting
for the raw to come out, if you wish, please have a look at this article which just
appeared in Animate.TV a few hours ago. It is an extended report on that special
marathon showing in Shinjuku last Sunday, February 8th. Don't worry about the
extensive text. I had a look through it and I didn't see anything exciting at first
glance. I'll check more. The good part is that there are lots of photos of the three
main voice actresses and Ikuhara.

So her mom wrote a story about the meeting of a "forest" and a "moon" girl and their love huh? It's is happening with Ginko and Kureha.
Those girl from Kureha's class are really evil, I guess Harishima is sleeping with Yuriika, also if it's Yuriika who is behind everything how can she loved Kureha's mom so much but now she is doing bad thing to her child?!

You know, for a moment there I actually thought Kaoru and her little gang of bitches were going to sacrifice Kureha into the flames or something there. Sacrifice her to the Conformity Goddess, oh no! But no, they just sacrificed Sumika's letter into their little hellfire of doom. It just looked like such a creepy little Satanic ritual with the candles and ominous lighting all that. I find it a little odd Kureha wasn't suspicious; I mean the whole thing just gave off bad vibes. Especially when Kaoru told her to open the letter and basically stand there and read it in front of everyone else; I would've found that incredibly weird and awkward.

Although we did one glorious sacrifice to the Yuri Goddess — Ginko tossing herself into a pit of flames for Kureha. How nice. I feel like that's a new development feelings-wise; I mean Ginko was willing to stand by and let Sumika get eaten so she could have Kureha all to herself, but here she saves Sumika's letter for Kureha, like she put aside her jealousy to return something that was important to Kureha.

I liked the story of the Moon Girl and Forest Girl too, seems like that might become some nice parallelism there. I love how symbolic and deep this show is, since I'm a big fan of symbols.

Overall, it was a great episode! =)

Loved this episode and this time I actually managed to understand most of it. I can see that the book represents Kureha and Ginko. That was pretty obvious.

Poor Sumiko wanted to protect Kureha from being invisible.

Seems like the Kureha x Ginko ship is finally setting sail!

I'm guessing the flowers represented love and that girl wanted to burn that love.

Glad to see the Shabadadoo

Not sure what the mirror represents or killing oneself but even so it's still pretty interesting.

i know i'm really late to the party, but the discussion here is really interesting and i wanted to give my own two cents.
i think yurikuma is not a show for everyone and the production [and ikuhara] were well aware of it ever since the beginning.
it's not an easy theme, the artsy atmosphere is confusing and it requires you to think about what you're seeing in order to understand it. it was never made to be a huge hit. it's more of a treat to fans of the genre, which aren't the majority anywhere.
i mean, it's not easy to understand why it didn't do that well with sales and the common japanese people. aren't most of different things like that? they become sort of a classic just among the people who are into it? get any indie movie made in america, they can be really famous, but you can't compare its box office to any blockbusters because they are made for a niche and that's it.
and the ratings being different from hat we see here, that has a really simple explanation. we're halfway through the series. anyone who didn't like it or didn't want to bother understanding it already dropped it, making this a niche. we are the target audience of the anime, hence, we like it. as it was previously intended by ikuhara and the studio.

that moon girl x forest girl storyerlling was truly playful and beautiful! the mirror is the limit that makes both worlds distant and breaking this mirror might be breaking the rules, conventions, prohibitions that this division and those worlds imposed on them/society, and, in this case, moon girl and forest girl. So breaking this mirror by a mutual kiss is the same as breaking worlds rules, ideologies and prison that it tries to limit people in some kind of fictional representation... in the case of the world of moon girl, as "phantoms". just a personal suggestion and interpretation.

Ikuhara's profound storytelling is unmatched in this industry. This show, again, like Ikuhara's previous works, breaks the mold while telling a story that also breaks societal conventions, norms, and judgement.

This episode was so good with the birthday letter, mirror, mutual kiss, etc. They all served a purpose to the narrative in the most beautiful fashion.
