Haha the reason my club started was because the teacher overheard my friend talking about madoka magica

Got dragged to an anime club meeting once back in high school by a friend of mine and I was horrified with what I saw: Cat ears, acne, headbands, sweat stains, broken Japanese, engrish, and yaoi fanart everywhere.
The club consisted of around a dozen weebs, including said friend, and that day they were watching episode #3,574 of One BleaRuto or some shit. I asked the president what else they'd watched and I got the expected response of "Bleach, Naruto, this one old show called 'Sailor Moon'. You probably haven't heard of that one."
"My sister and I watched that on Toonami back in '97, Mack."
"Oh really? Well what about [I don't fucking remember]?"
"Saw that on Toonami back in 2000. Did any of you guys even watch Toonami back when it was good?"
As it turned out, I had watched more anime than the entirety of the club. I offered to show them something new and exciting (Birdy: Decode) but they declined and I noped my way out the door.

That was almost five years ago.

Oh GOD, I can imagine the hardships you must have faced.

We've never had clubs in our educational system and so I didn't really have the chance to join one back when I was in school. Although I suppose I wouldn't even have joined it since I wasn't really into anime back then. Anyway, it's always nice to meet people with common interests, so I think I wouldn't mind going to a club nowadays.

hmm, high school anime clubs, sounds interesting.

though anime clubs are not at all rare in universities/colleges. In fact, you will find that almost every school has its own anime club, and some of them are quite big.

I went to one at my college for a couple of years. It was pretty fun because we watched a variety of current shows, and this was before I had a decent internet connection or a job, so it was useful. I saw and liked a whole bunch of shows I wouldn't have considered watching.

I stopped going though when it got taken over by someone else and they started to watch nothing but old shows I'd seen already.

Well, we just started an "unoffcial" one, where its just our friends, around 12 people. Since a teacher allowed us to stay in one of the classrooms during break time, and most of us have watched anime before (only 6 watched a lot).
So far we've watched, Tokyo Ghoul, Nichijou, D-frag and spirited away. And we've watched the live action of death note.

and our rule is: "no ecchi" =(

There's a Anime and Manga club at my school led by a few of my friends from the year below me, and they're doing an extremely good job at it. We don't just sit and watch anime, in fact, unlike most chilled, lazy and complacent anime clubs, we never did watch any in the sessions, but instead we have tasks and assignments such as drawing characters, making vocaloid videos, conducting a music cover for an anime, or even re-acting specific anime scenes so we actually make use of our time productively.

But i really do believe that anime is underrated some times, seriously some anime series are AGELESS and PRICELESS story and plot wise, but most people who DON'T watch anime just associate it with DBZ, not every anime is frekin DBZ, gosh !!!
So what i'm trying to say is , making/participating in an anime club is a good effort that might help "shed some light" on things. :)

Actually my public library has a anime club on the 3rd Wednesday or Thursday of every month or something like that but I never gone nor do I probably ever plan to.
