I also disagree. If DxD was just 100% fanservice I would have dropped it and never would have read the novels. In comparison, I couldn't watch past the first episode of Trinity Seven despite it not having that much fanservice in the first episode. What makes DxD really worthwhile is the slapstick and self-aware over-the-top humor that is always present. The actual plot follows a very classic shounen plot (yes there is a shounen plot) and introduces a shit tons of characters and mythology every arc. Neither of these elements alone would be sufficient to make the series good but the combination of all of the above + fanservice makes this series more entertaining than it should have been. This proves there are shitty fanservice-oriented series and superior fanservice-oriented series. Not all fanservice-oriented series can be put in the same bin just because it has fanservice, a common mistake people often make. |

Call me when you get mythical ancient evil dragons showing up to fuck shit up in Darkness. Azi Dahaka and Grendel would slaughter Darkness in an instant. To LoveRU only has the fanservice going for it and a few good characters. Plotwise it's incredibly flimsy and a girl with a harem plan is not enough to make up for that. I still like the series but don't think for a moment that it's some jewel of the genre. |
