Hey guys,

I've been reading the manga for a long time and really enjoy it. So one can guess how hyped I was after hearing it would get an anime adaption! The first few episodes were good, after that it felt like animations were getting worse and worse.
So after 20 episodes the anime is getting a good score on MAL, but not a very good (like 8+). Since the manga is pretty successful I'd like to know if the anime is selling good in Japan.
Because in my opinion Baby Steps is getting really good at the point where the first anime season ends. So I'd like to discuss wheter you guys think Baby Steps will get a second season (and how long it will take to be aired). There is definitely enough material (English translated there are 227, but in Japan there are about 308 released at the moment).
I know that the manga won an award for best shounen not so long ago, but how is its overall sales on manga and anime? Is it good enough for another anime season with maybe even higher budget or do you think they won't produce a second season?

Well I see NHK/NHK Enterprises on the producers list and NHK do whatever they want even if the anime doesn't sell well, simply because they can.

So a second season is actually quite probable.

Reminds me of when Phi Brain Season 3 was announced:

It's possible and honestly, I hope so because there are some characters from the manga that I like to see.

Yeah but what are the chances of getting the second season within the next year? Log Horizon for example will air the second season soon already, while other animes need like 1-3 years for another season even if they got enough chapters to use for the adaption.

There are plenty of manga chapters to adapt, so... while there's no guarantee there's every possibility. NHK and all that.

Don't know about DVD/BD sales (is the first volume even out yet?!) but the manga sales have had a modest increase. Something like 50%?

DVD vol.1 was released 5 days ago, I guess the sales number for it will be out this week. It seems no BD release for this series.

Hoping for a second season because this anime is awesome imo!

Why not? Depending on the price it wouldn't be a waste of money like you say. It seems like 35$ for each DVD, well, it's kinda high for just 4 episodes... But yeah, there are other websites selling it for much less and with more episodes, so why not buying it if you liked the anime?

It doesn't appear that the DVD made the sales charts for the week, so the sales figures are pretty low. We should also watch the sales figures for the next volume of manga that comes out and see if it sells more.

I would love to see them make a 2nd season or at least a movie, since I can't see them getting to the Nationals in four more episodes, let alone getting to the point where
I expect he will go to Florida before the end of the season, but maybe not much past that.

You can't compare pricing in the US with pricing in Japan. They are willing to pay that much. Heck, they have four episodes per disc! Usually they pay that much for two episodes!

The lack of a bluray may be more of a problem, but it is probably about two-thirds the price of a bluray, so that may make it better... But I don't think it is selling well...

Plus, as was mentioned above, NHK does as they please. Since it got the green light in the first place, it probably means that somebody loves the manga and wants to animate it. If that is the case, the money will flow and the anime will get made. (Not that they are spending a ton on the show in the first place. The animation is ... not the fanciest out there...)

All I'm saying is why buy the 4 episode DVD when you can whait an year and buy the 12 episode DVD for the same price.

Just passing this on, but Baby Steps did not rank in the Top 300 DVDs. 清水楓 派遣ファイル ranked 294 on DVD and sold 164, so Baby Steps definitely sold less than 164 DVDs.

Its low sales doesn't matter much though, since it airs earlier in the day and also on NHK TV channel. It relies more on ratings, so it could get another anime adaptation depending on factors such as its TV rating, boost to the manga sales, merchandise sales, etc.
