When is a Character a good character? You don't have to necessarily like him, but when do you say he is a good character non the less.

A lot of people say: "when he shows realism and is believeable". But when is a character believeable for you?

And when is character developement good in your opinion?

I was just wondering the last few days and thinking about this topic^^

I mostly rate characters through their voice. Probably I will like the character if his appearance is influencing the anime well and there's no problem with that character's personality.

I think it can vary from person to person. Some like depth, some like realistic approach and they consider that as good, some like "just" and simply likeable characters. Sometimes you don't even need a background story, reasoning behind their actions, coherence and so on. As for me, I think there are many good types of characters, and I probably could not state in a couple of lines what defines a good character, because there's not really a definitive definition.

When you can think of the character as a possible human: someone with backstory, and a personality a bit more complex then a "One Gag show"

when its (part of) a deconstruction and/or isn't used in a ton of stock scenes

always, really; there are many ways of character development. or maybe im just thinking of relationship development.. or maybe they're both the same; who knows, its weird to define.. i believe there is character development outside of the most obvious exemples (hurr simon durr clannad) in every new bit we learn about the character and their relation with others

Main characters: cant be annoying, whiny, overly weak, or otherwise lame. Dynamic MCs are preferred. I like badasses.

Side Characters: I tend to like side characters more, so they are very important. A good side character must be unique, but definitely not cliche. Its good for side characters to provide comic relief, but as long as its not in a cliche way (clumsy clutz, obnoxious, etc). My favorite side characters are the mysterious ones. The ones that turn out to be more important than you think, and have shady back stories.

Believability and consistency are important. Consistency doesn't mean they can't develop, but it's pretty bad when, let's say, a lone wolf type character is inexplicably sociable and relaxed in one ep. After this it'll depend on the show. I won't really expect a multidimensional character with deep motives in a comedy, for example.

Lastly, the most important part: their eyes.

How believable the character is should be a non-factor. A good character is how interesting they are. If the character is well developed but is boring, I don't consider that a good character. This is entertainment we're watching after all. A non-developed, but interesting character is far superior to the opposite. Look at Baccano! It's full of them.

i like characters that can think

no, seriously, i'm gettin' tired of all these characters basing the entirety of their actions and existence solely on their emotions, even more so when they're weak. these types of characters have no regards for the consequences. i mean, are their heads made out of wooden blocks?

A "good" character should have :
- a authentic background story about his/her past
- a intelligence level that is acceptable (getting obvious things like the girls/boy that did fall in love with her/him)
- a unique ability

I think it is important to know the character's backstory, what has led them to behave like they do now, and what motivates them. I also like characters who have development throughout the series, in a believable and realistic way.

If they have a three dimensions, and particularly the third dimension (read: depth), that helps a lot. Being something other than a stereotypical/cliché character or being a stereotypical/cliché character that's deconstructed is also important.

Dynamic characters can be fun, but there are plenty of rounded static characters that are also interesting.

Other than that, it's generally on a subjective basis.

for me, unpredictability and depth makes or breaks the character.

It depends on person to person I think sometimes people like a character they can identify with sort of like having a favorite song. A deep back story, personality, and an interesting current story are all important.
