How should we know? Do we look like we live in Japan to you?

Most schools do have pools. Do you live in the slums of California?

I thought most high schools had indoor pools. My middle school had one as well.

Some countries actually spend money on schools, instead of planes that immediately get sent to boneyards or tax breaks for multibillionaires.

But despite being in America, my high school in a working-class/suburban neighborhood did actually have a pool.

In America, few high schools have their own swimming pools on campus. Usually they are reserved for the more wealthy schools (such as private schools). However, general anime-watching seems to show that almost every high school in Japan has their own swimming pool.

Are real high schools in Japan like the ones shown in anime?

rrexyl - check out this article: http://factsanddetails.com/japan/cat23/sub150/item830.html

as it turns out, just about every school in Japan does indeed have a swimming pool, and swimming lessons are mandatory

The schools I studied in don't have a swimming pool. Or an indoor basketball gym but there are outdoor basketball courts. I guess only the wealthier schools have those. I think it's cos in my country, sports are seen as only hobbies and not as career choices.

And wow, a person from Japan actually answered. That's really cool..

I wish my school had a pool. It would maybe make P.E. at least remotely interesting.

Nooooo. For me, no. I'm self-conscious about my body (as are at least 40% of the females in my grade) so I'd rather not swim with others.

Japanese ghetto.

Ghetto school with pools.

My high school had an indoor pool as well and it's in a more rural area but still close to the suburbs.

The only educational institute in Swansea with a pool that I know of is the University.

But by god it's a quality pool..... It's used to train Team GB olympic swimmers.

Can't speak for Japan but I would guess no.

Pools in anime are usually only there for cheap shots of cartoon chicks in bikini's.

We have swimming lessons, but so far as i know, schools just rent out the pools of the local leisure centres for an hour.

Our school never had a pool :(

I don't think every single school would have a pool anyways, the upkeep for that is kinda expensive and there are usually local facilities nearby.

My school even way back had a pool , but it was reserved only for those on the swim team. My son's Middle School and High school both had pools, his high school one was actually rather large.

I'm pretty sure most schools in anime are private schools. Like, you have to pay to go.

And my high school had an indoor swimming pool. I don't think its really that rare..

Wow, now that I think about it, most anime that I've watched that takes place in a Japanese highschool setting had swimming pools in their campus...
I'm going to bet that it's actually common, not that it's really surprising to me.

The richest Public Secondary Schools in the world are actually in the Toronto Suburbs

e.g. http://www.bondfield.com/portfolio/schools/000130billcrot/lightboxes/bill-crothers-secondary-school-01.jpg

This school above has a Semi-Olympic size pool and its not a private school

The OP implied that swimming pools are a rarity when that is obviously not the case.

Who cares about actually answering the question anyways?

None of the high schools in my district had pools either. The only schools that had it were those for filthy rich kids...you know people who actually have a pool at home.

What I want to know is, do students really go to the school rooftops in Japan. I just don't see the point of having one :/

Never had a pool in any school I ever attended. My high school barely had enough rooms and desks for everyone and some of the classrooms were in double wide trailers outside the actual school.

As a kid I went to a Japanese elementary school for a day. The school had a huge swimming pool, pool toys (noodles, floats, etc), and a walk-through shower. It was awesome.

The school I used to go when I was in my 2nd grade had a pool but I don't think that every school in that city had one as well. Later I got transferred to another city and my new school didn't even have a playground of it's own.
