Welcome to the first Special Read discussion! We'll start with Kyuuso wa Cheese no Yume wo Miru
by Mizushiro Setona, a must read for those who appreciate those unique works of BL!

Our review:

When it comes to the yaoi genre I usually don’t hold high expectations story-wise, you can surely find new twists or interesting details out of the classic stereotypes, but apart from that, it is too often that all the elements seem to revolve around only one thing: sex.

Well, this story is not like that at all. This manga is not your usual yaoi. It was beyond all of my expectations to the point that it surprised me, in a really good way.

The set-up is something I have seen before countless times: sempai meets kouhai from old days, kouhai is in love with sempai since a long time ago without telling, kouhai uses sempai actual weakness and blackmails him with the "I want your body in exchange..." demand. After that, things are not quite simple; this is a deep story where the feelings of the characters are really well conveyed to the reader, you are allowed to see their struggles, their hesitations and the implications of such a difficult situation as a homosexual falling deeply in love with a straight man that doesn’t feel anything in return. Nor love, neither sex are given facts here, everything happens after a proper development of the characters feelings or train of thought, and even those intimate situations remind you that things aren’t really simple when it comes to love between the same gender.

The dialogues are just brilliant, after reading another stories from the mangaka I would say that this one has a hint of her psychological streak. Mizushiro Setona did really well with this story, I consider this the best yaoi so far, and maybe this is the result of the work of such experienced mangaka. The characters are real, you can see their good points, their bad points and the way they improve, the way they make mistakes and go on ahead, their feelings...and you can really sympathize with them. Besides that, both of them act actually like men..you will not find the stereotype of the seme/uke here that makes you think that is actually a woman and not a man what you are seeing.

The art is no big deal, but I find it nicely done, Mizushiro Setona has her own style which has improved a lot with time, and although it looks a bit odd at the beginning, it gives kind of calming sensation later, she really knows how to portray emotions, not only in words but also with the characters expressions, my only complain about the art is that some characters look a lot like others, that is all. Everything else compensates it.

So…If you like really nicely done stories, stories that make you think, while keeping you really interested; stories that talk about actual love and its development in a good pace, while reminding you what it really feels to be in love, and the hardships of trying to convey it when it is unrequited; and besides that you like yaoi, well, this is the perfect choice for you.

So, let the manga discussion start, share your opinions so that other can know if they are interested in reading this manga, and remember to use the spoiler tags if you are gonna talk about important topics of the story that aren't in the descriptions.

I'm about to read it, it looks really good~

Love the art, it's by the same author who did After School Nightmare which is a favorite series of mine. I have a feeling I'll enjoy this one also, I'll post my thoughts after. (:

I read it and it's one of my favorite yaoi.

Usually, I prefer uke but for this manga it's the seme which I like. He has attitudes of uke as I like them ^_^

I've read an obscene amount of yaoi, but I would still put this one in my top ten. Though, I really should read it again since it' been a while. The mangka is one of my favorites as well.

Kyuuso wa Cheese no Yume wo Miru is definitely an excellent example of a 'realistic' yaoi manga. It gets down to the nitty gritty aspects of life. Firstly, that it isn't perfect. Secondly, that there will always be obstacles in love, even if it is passionate and romantic.

Kyuuso wa chiizu no yume o miru is an outstanding work which in my opinion transcends the borders of yaoi in a priorly unprecedented way.
The two main characters appear to be taken from real life. There's as good as no cliché here, certainly none that is overused. As has been stated before: the best aspect of the character development is that these two guys are seriously flawed. Perfect just isn't realistic and can't be taken serious for long. Despite all that - or maybe even because of this imperfectness the reader really gets to like the characters. I personally have been routing for Imagase from the start.

There is one single aspect of this manga that has cut my enjoyment a little bit and that was the serious drama. Already in the first volume there was this unsettling uneasiness that accompanies their relationship and problems. In the second volume I thought that this gloomy atmosphere increased and made my heart feel like being stuck underneath a steam-roller - not an always pleasant feeling altogether. On the other side, to transmit feelings to me like this confirms just how realistic the characters are and just how well the whole story is conveyed.

If there ever was a third volume it would definitely be very, very high on my must-read list. And I would like to award the mangaka with some order for an outstanding cliché-less break-through in the world of yaoi, that has become one of the benchmarks of this genre.

Haven't really read it but I heard about it. I'll get to reading it later. (will be the first yaoi to read on my read to do.)
If I'm no longer replying back, means my life is busy. As simple as that. Will get back as life settle down.

I've read it a while back and I didn't rmember too much about what went on in the series, so I re-read it the other day and what I have to say it that it was pretty good. I had really enjoyed After School Nightmare and I think this is why I liked this one too.

I was going to read this once the scanlation for the sequel's been completed, but now I'm in two minds >.< It caught my eye from the beginning, but waiting for the next chapter would be torture.
Let's see how long I can hold up.

I think more BL needs to model off of this work. The club mass message mentioned a BL being tagged with josei and I say that needs to happen far more often! From what I've seen, the main publishers of BL don't focus on this kind of presentation or even age/content group. Stuff like Asuka Ciel, Be x Boy, Aqua etc tend to either be more childish, themed (like Arabian Prince time!) etc. But this is just a good BL work about regular men published in a josei magazine and if Judy does more of this, I will stalk them with fervor.

Shortly, I love both the characters and their interactions. They are real and dynamic. If you include the sequel, there's even more change inbetween the two.

I felt the same way, it gives mixed feelings to me, that is why I tagged it like gloomy, I think this is something that comes with Mizushiro Setona's style, I felt the same with After School Nightmare and I am feeling the same with Kuro Bara Alice..and in spite of not liking drama that much...I still love the way she manages to get to me XD. The most of the times I just try to get away of that sort of thing, but with this series is very realistic! and yeah, the sequel is even deeper in that way..I felt so sad yesterday after reading ch3, it reminds you of your own experiences..that is why this is a must read :D

I voted "I haven't read it yet, but plan to". I'm mainly interested in this series since it's by the same mangaka of X-day and After School Nightmare so I'm sure that the storyline is unique = )

I only read "After school Nightmare" but I agree with you about the style. I feel like it's always revolves around real life issues.

Yay, I finally finish reading it. And got to say it is a Masterpiece. It's very good to read something like this.

I totally agree with you on that. Maybe then the BL, will be more enjoyable, but then there are other that I would also disagree.

I honestly couldn't say I liked this manga much due to this very reason. Half the time I felt like my heart was being pulled out, and every happy moment was drowned out by the depressing material that inevitably followed. I wish the drama would have been toned down a bit... after awhile it felt too ridiculous to be realistic in my honest opinion. I do appreciate that this is a yaoi manga with an actual plot and good character development though, I just don't think it suites my taste.

WOW this club is AMAZING!!!!! I'm finding so much good manga and this is definitely one of them!! I read this so fast and I loved it. Now I'm waiting for the last chapter. So excited to see how it ends!!

Emotional tension-filled yaoi manga is what I love the most. That usually comes with a gay guy/straight guy couple so i'm so happy that I could be introduced to another great manga that was so my "style."

It also helped that I'm a huge fan of Mizushiro Setona already <3. Thank you so much AGUY!! Can't wait to see what's in your next "Special Read Section."

Wow, I can't believe that I read it back to back :D. I can just say its a beautifully written Manga and shows that no love is flawless. Every time Kyouichi & Imagase got back together I thought they will remain together forever...and then there was a "bombshell" thrown by the author. Sometimes it becomes so difficult for straight people to imagine that even "homo" harbor the same feelings. They also have the same level of insecurities and faults, they also get jealous and annoying at the same time. With Kyouichi & Imagase I can truly see the trials and tribulations of being in love. And that's what these series is all about. Thanks for the recommendation and I recommend reading this Manga to all Yaoi readers, (even if you are not, just give it try, you'll love it)♥.

I can honestly say I didn't care for this one. Kyouichi annoyed the crap out of me and there was just too much drama for me. I think the trials they go through is somewhat realistic, but not Kyouichi's "go with it" attitude

lol cuz of this thread, i just re-read it... it was one of the first i read. i usually don't like drama, but this one was pretty amazing. the reversi was pretty crazy.

the first time i read this + the sequel, i think i did not finish the sequel entirely, cuz i thought it ended with Imagase abandoning Kyouichi when Tamaki seemed to be a better future for Kyouichi, and I was so pissed I wanted to throw my iPad at the wall... but I just re-read it, and it seems I missed a few chapters or something. =x so I'm a much happier camper now. =) *moves MAL rating up*

This manga (and its sequel) is my absolute favorite. It was brilliantly realistic, beautifully depressing for the most part, and for me, just wonderfully touching. I adore this manga, and really wish there were at least a few more like it. The artwork was beautiful as well.
