As someone who's fervently anti-Light Yagami, this was great. The smug bastard finally gets rattled.

L is pretty cool, though.

it obiously gets better... this is where the psychological war between the two masterminds.... the one behind Kira and the other one behind Justice, L, is one of the best you'll ever see in Anime... My my... I'm really impressed by Light's reactions, ability to keep his cool in front of the real deal, and L's boldness to solve the most difficult case he would ever be involved in.... My I'm also surprised of the apparent perfect flow this anime has... plus the animation is top notch.... I'm totally loving this animated version :D

Excellent episode! I knew L would reveal himself but practically every scene was done flawlessly.

I don't really know how school works in Japan though. Is it really like that? Just take a test, and bam, you're in college O.o

episodes are starting to get even better than before.

OMG! L and Light attend the same school!
Gotta hand it to L though. He sure follows through only if there's a 5% chance of success.

L has good gut instincts, he stated something just didnt feel right about light, he was too perfect. As far as i can tell L wasn't originally in japan so i guess he just entered school and performed the exam with 100% marks, he must really be a genius

Well, usually you're taking one entrance exam for each college that you apply to. Keep in mind that competition can be insane - getting into Yale or Harvard is a breeze in comparison - so some students don't get into any college the first year out of High School (Hideki from Chobits comes to mind).

Also, the entrance ceremony was in spring - I'm pretty sure the entrance exams were late fall/winter, so there's a bit of a time lapse there :)

That he presented himself to him was surprising but not unexpected. And now that they will be classmates friends this might make it more difficult for him to make his moves.

This episode remained me of Code Geass when Lulu found out of Suzaku.

When he said "I am L" at first i thought he said "i am hell" i was like "wtf?" anyway, L just pulled a great move, the episode was really suspensful and good. but if there is only a 5% chance, i can see looking into it, but WHY put in all the effort? why not put more of the effort into the other 95%? L sure has a strange way of working.

Light's evil laugh, I was like: O.o

Obviously, brilliant episode! As soon as L revealed that he's L, Light will put the suspicion upon himself as soon has he would kill L, that is, even if he can somehow get his real name. brilliant! xD
In the end Light's being a little bit too optimistic, in my opinion.

I just watched the first 9 episodes in a row, and this is looking to becoming my favourite anime of all time. L is a genius, but so is Light. Both great characters, going back and forth on who I'm really rooting for, just can't wait to find out what happens next.

Compared to the manga, the anime really makes Light seem megalomaniacal. He seemed more introverted and more in control of his emotions in the manga. I also don't recall the Death Note making him go crazy. It's been a while since I've read it. Anyone else have thoughts on it?

At least he don't belive that Kiro iS Light.
That L,he is a wild guy, look at him he is very strange, istead of Light who looks like a elite student.

I simply lost words. The way L thinks, makes me think what Light should do. Because I'm me, in Light's place I would probably flip as he did but wouldn't really be able to stop myself from writing L's name in the death note. Something really strong would be needed to keep me away from it.

Which reminds me, L is like his name. Isn't that enough to kill him? (In the case where a criminal survived because Light got wrong information on the criminal's name. The criminal was able to escape -or so did one of the police members say-; but in this case saying L to L is like his name/nickname. I would have experienced with nicknames too)

Can't wait the next episode.

the way he sits makes me uncomfortable
"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."

The part where Light had his villainous breakdown has got to be one of the best scenes in DN.

Calm and controlled throughout the journey home, he even had the right mind to lock the door and take seat at the table. But the moment he sits down, he completely flips. And then he regains his usual devious self. They even had time for his evil laugh.

Extraordinary. I loved this episode. I like both of the main characters the same.
L sits so cool. Light is so calm. They're basically identical. L's move with revealing
his identity to Light was an act of a genius. Their mind-boggling thoughts are so
interesting and keep me watching this brilliant show. ^__________________^

The problem I have is that I think it's ridiculous for L to put this much effort into investigating a few people whom he admits have no more than a 5% chance of being Kira. The fact that Light is Kira is irrelevant, because L doesn't know that; "detective's intuition" is not a good enough excuse to focus on something so insignificant. Kira continues to kill countless people (23 a day?); I'd think this would be an urgent enough situation that L would put more effort into an investigation that has more likelihood of turning results than a measly 5%.

Which brings me to my next point: L and the police force are curiously lackadaisical about this considering the urgency of the situation. As I said, huge numbers of people are dying, and each day Light lives, a lot more people are going to die. Why, then, are they so relaxed? Would they press harder at finding Kira immediately if it was innocent people being killed instead of criminals? If so, it's easy to assume they view the criminals as lesser humans whose lives are worth less value anyway, and that completely negates the purpose of their investigation to begin with - if they believe the lives of the criminals are worth less than the lives of the innocent, then they are essentially agreeing with Light.

And that completely ignores the fact that no one has even bothered to question how Kira is killing people like this. The methods of death and the fact he controls how they die and what they do before dying to the levels he does is more than enough proof that he's using some type of supernatural means, something that would typically be questioned.

He doesn't have any other leads and everything he learned about the situation thus far led him to that 5%. Now obviously when that 5% is the only thing he has going for his case he would focus on it. Throwing it away because it's a small number is not practical from L's point of view especially considering the wasted effort if he starts over.

And how exactly would he go about finding a higher likelihood if this 5% came from Kira killing FBI agents that targeted a small group of people from the police; something relatively specific? If that only has a 5% chance then anything else he might try to get a lead would probably not even be 1%.

I'd say chances are this 5% is just bullshit and he's more than 50% sure at least though.

But they are doing their best. It's just that what they can do is very limited, especially when there are so few people working on the case.

I don't see how that helps them in the investigation. They figured out that they have to hide their names and faces to not be killed by this mysterious power or person, that's all they need to know for now. They can get the details when the case is over; no point in wasting time trying to figure out the method.
