I think the first yaoi i saw was some ridiculous molestation or kidnapped-then-forced-to-be-in-an-AV shit from the 90s that made me go "WTF"

I'd read slash before I was even into anime or yaoi though, but I don't remember my reaction. Probably something like "This is weird...no, this is hot."

Yuki_Saga said:
Have you ever watched Junjou Romantica or Sekaiichi Hatsukoi? .-. Their pretty much the top and well known.
Hm.. I think there's a lot better out there than JR and SH. There's at least 3 couples from those two worlds that blossom as a result of rape or repeated molestation garnering feelings, and a part from that I think the storyline and conflicts are pretty superficial.

So they might be popular because they've both had anime adaptations made, but there's much better manga out there.[/quote|

Ya I know, I've read better mangas and I liked better, but they are pretty popular. I just havent found a better ANIME than them, but I've seem better manga.

Anyway most yaoi are made by females so it makes sense since most guys likes the other one.

Yup. And lol I don't know why people thing if you watch Yaoi you're gay....-. I wonder if any straight guys watch it, if any did I'd be happy. `-`

A shōjo manga magazine I used ton read when I was like ten always included a glossary of terms with a 'shōnen ai' entry and sometimes advertised BL manga from the same publishing company, so I was at least familiar with a little bit of boyxboy fluff before I was exposed to yaoi.

I saw an episode of Junjou Romantica on YouTube because a tumblr theme maker I respected had mentioned it on her site I think. I was like

but I still watched the whole thing in one setting.

I've gotten a little picky about my yaoi since then. Uke characters like Misaki I rather stay away from.

I was disappointed. I am talking about BL manga, as the quality and quantity of BL anime is too small to even discuss. My main quips are the bad character designs, stereotypical seme-uke relationship and wannabe dark stories. However, I have found several shounen ai manga that break this mold and inject humor and energy into their stories, and enjoy them as I would any other kind of manga.

My first Yaoi Anime, that I was by the way forced to watch, was "Boku no sexual harassment" and as bad as the title makes it sound, I didn't hate it that much.
I actually laughed a lot.

Gravitation was probably the second one that I watched, this time of my own free will and I actually didn't think it was that bad.

The dudes tend to be shocking under-objectified, if anything.

A lot them focus on romance themes and leave a lot to the imagination. And it totally different from a lot of hardcore yuri. It's as if there's two brands of yaoi hentai. The ones geared towards guys, in which either traps or bara dudes are more common, nothing in between, and is basically like your generic creepy tentacle rape but just with a girly boy replacing the generic feminine woman. For people who really need to get psychological help and stop fantasizing about rape. And then there's the extremely psuedo-porn stuff that makes up the majority of the stuff made by women for women.

You can just feel the sexism and internalized misogyny in what would otherwise be a fantastic expression of homoerotic desire. Women are taught not to have a female gaze and objectify men, and are sexually repressed to the point that women aren't going wild in drawing porn like men are. Of course this isn't all female mangaka of hentai yaoi. But a strikingly worrying amount of them. While dudes are going free range and making oppai pads with androgynous boys replacing the busty women and their genitalia replacing the breasts. While on the other hand, it is common in women's yaoi hentai to completely replace genitalia with white circles and multiple things are done to unsexualize the characters, of all things. Worse yet, people are re-establishing this gender role with excuses like "men are more visual than women", despite no neurological evidence for this idea.

Another negative evidence of internalized misogyny is that for much of hentai, not only is the concept of "uke" and "seme" a sexist and problematic concept. But the thrust to try to get female characters to put themselves in the position of the uke being dominated by the seme shows another aspect of society teaching women to be sexually submissive. If there's anything that could be more romantic in hentai, it is the sex. Perhaps a little more vanilla, a little fewer fantasies of being dominated by a bigger man and uke characters being a self insert. But most importantly, how about more vanilla and less creepy bdsm sexuality? Nobody has to be a dom or a sub in a relationship.

Softcore yaoi and yuri is more the close to the same, though. There's a lot of emphasis on romance in softcore yuri anime. Sorry for going on about the hentai. I just find there to be the most problems in the hentai sector of yaoi.

I watched No.6 on Crunchyroll without knowing that they were going to end up together, and yeah, it was pretty good. I liked how the fact that they were both dudes was not played up or gimmicky, and it just happened like a straight love story.

That was perhaps one of the best things about the romance in that show, but I could go on forever about how many things I thought No.6 did right. Moving on..

First yaoi was Sensitive Pornograph. I don't think that was the best thing to start with, but it happened, my reaction was a mix of "what the hell am I watching" and "why do I think this is hot".

Overall though I don't have much of a problem with yaoi, though I'm not a huge yaoi watcher. I can enjoy it when I just want something cute/mindless, but I like my yaoi like I like most of my anime: with a story I can get into, characters I get emotionally invested in, and a lot of things that make me fall on my knees crying about how much this anime is ripping out my heart and stomping on it.

Call me a masochist.

First Yaoi was doujins.

My first impression of them were that they are trash, disgusting abominations that turn character derisive, mere shells of their original selves for the uses of one's sickening fantasy and sexual perversion without a hint of resemblence of what the character was. Should be disposed trash that should be burnt in hell. After all, if they are going to make that kind of bullshit up, might as well write their own characters, it is unforgivably offensive that they desecrate other people's work like that.

Yeah, I didn't take it too well.

Oh well. I admit at first I was a little disturbed. Probably because I was still a pure little girl... I don't even remember what my first yaoi (manga, that's a given) was, probably a doujin... But my interest kept rising after I read Houkago Hokenshitsu, that technically is not a shounen ai, but almost. I timidly began searching for yaoi manga by the same author, and I became more familiar with the genre. Now I don't have any problem with yaoi, I play/read BL visual novels too. I don't have problems with hentai or yuri too, but I prefer yaoi. Anyway I don't consider myself a fujoshi.

Haha sounds like a yaoi plot. It's so interesting to see everyone's reactions because it didn't affect me that much in the beginning. Reading shoujo gets me depressed so I just stick with yaoi. It never fails to give me fluffy feels although I do agree with the seme uke thing mentioned before.

That's probably everybody's real reaction, or just a simple "oh, this is yaoi.. *exit*"

But to preserve the all important image of a straight guy, we must make it incredibly apparent that we hate all that has to do with homosexuality, and must act as if we are scarred beyond repair for having behold witness to the utter terror and appalling sight that is the ungodly abhorrence of *GHASP* yaoi.
