What do you identify yourself with most? * POWER METAL The protagonist arrives riding a white unicorn, escapes from the dragon, saves the princess and makes love to her in an enchanted forest. * THRASH METAL The protagonist arrives, fights the dragon, saves the princess and fucks her. * HEAVY METAL The protagonist arrives on a Harley, kills the dragon, drinks a few beers and fucks the princess. * FOLK METAL The protagonist arrives with some friends playing accordions, violins, flutes and many more weird instruments, the dragon falls asleep (because of all the dancing). Then all leave…….. without the princess. * VIKING METAL The protagonist arrives in a ship, kills the dragon with his mighty axe, skins the dragon and eats it, rapes the princess to death, steals her belongings and burns the castle before leaving. * DEATH METAL The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon, fucks the princess and kills her, then leaves. * BLACK METAL The protagonist IS the dragon, dwells in the heart of the night with in a castle full of hellhounds and eternal flames. He kills the sassy knight, fucks the noble steed and sacrifices the princess to Satan. * GORE METAL The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon and spreads his guts in front of the castle, fucks the princess and kills her. Then he fucks the dead body again, slashes her belly and eats her guts. Then he fucks the carcass for the third time, burns the corpse and fucks it for the last time. * DOOM METAL The protagonist arrives, sees the size of the dragon and thinks he could never beat him, then he gets depressed and commits suicide. The dragon eats his body and the princess as dessert. That’s the end of the sad story. * PROGRESSIVE METAL The protagonist arrives with a guitar and plays a solo of 26 minutes. The dragon kills himself out of boredom. The protagonist arrives to the princess’ bedroom, plays another solo with all the techniques and tunes he learned in the last year of the conservatory. The princess escapes looking for the ‘HEAVY METAL’ protagonist. * GLAM METAL The protagonist arrives, the dragon laughs at the guy’s appearance and lets him enter. He steals the princess’ make up and tries to paint the castle in a beautiful pink colour. * NU METAL The protagonist arrives in a run down Honda Civic and attempts to fight the dragon but he burns to death when his moronic baggy clothes catch fire. * GRINDCORE The protagonist arrives, screams something completely undecipherable for about two minutes and then leaves… * Gothic Metal The princess in a velvet costume starts singing soprano. The protagonist completes the duet when he shows up, they sing while the dragon plays the flute. Suddenly the dragon swallows up the pipe and accidentally scorches the beauty and the protagonist, and then he suffocates to death. All their souls are damned in hell for eternity. * Industrial Metal The protagonist arrives wearing greasy overcoat, makes an obscene gestures towards dragon, and gets escorted out of fairy tale land by security guards. * Speed Metal Suddenly there is a short solo, the dragon is confused; someone’s screaming weird stuff; the princess realizes she’s been deflowered; the dragon and the princess are still looking for the one who caused this. * Christian Metal The protagonist rides in on his way home from Church and sings a mushy power ballad to the dragon about how much Jesus loves him and that the dragon should turn to Him. The Dragon is immediately converted, and when the princess wants to 'thank’ the protagonist he replies, “Sorry, but I don’t believe in having sex before marriage.” * SYMPHONIC METAL The protagonist enters the lair of the dragon with a full choir and orchestra, and the princess sings notes so high-pitched that she makes the dragon go deaf. The dragon tries to burn them all to death, but all of the members of the choir sing so loudly and unified, that it creates a protective bubble, which only grows in strength from the lead guitarist’s solo later in the song, and the flames bounce back and the dragon ends up killing itself while everyone escapes. I'm a mix of folk, power, black, viking metal. |

From those descriptions, I'm symphonic. Prog metal is my favorite though. Real prog metal scenario: In his search for his ideal princess, protagonist travels across several dimensions and story lines, visits his past, witnesses his own birth and the death of every great hero throughout history. The history of all life passes before his eyes in the span of a second. He awakens to a barren, post-apocalyptic landscape. He had been dreaming in cryogenic slumber. As he wanders, he finds the bones of what surely must have been a dragon outside a castle. Inside, there's a note from a princess thousands of years ago. She took her own life after realizing that her perfect knight didn't exist in this world. This was before his time, but only by a hundred years or so. He walks through a large field of broken down windmills, under the perpetually cloudy sky. This scene looks somewhat familiar to him, but his memory is hazy, and he feels like he has lived lifetimes since then. He finally ends up at the sea. As despair is about to take him, a light appears in the water. The remains of humanity have taken refuge from the uninhabitable surface. Some of the technology still works, so no one goes hungry, but there's no telling when the machines will break down. Most people have 'plugged in' and escaped into their own fantasy worlds. Our hero looks upon the withered bodies and decides he has had enough fantasy. He chooses to stay in reality and pick up the pieces of human civilization, and begin again with the few that have the will to carry on. How did the world end up this way though? All that is known is that no one who explores too far on the surface ever comes back. What is this unfathomable menace that has forced humanity beneath the waves? Maybe you'll find out if we feel like doing another concept album. |

I don't care if people listen to them. But they aren't metal. They are just another j pop group with metal as a gimmick. It's a fabrication. I don't care that they are females. I listen to metal bands that have females in them so it isn't the issue. the issue is that they are a misrepresentation. I'm not being an elitest. I listen to different genres as well. Classical and electronic music Just to name some. If someone is a metal head and they like to listen to babymetal that's fine with me. It doesn't make them any less of a metal fan, but they should realize it's not metal. This is a thread about metal genres and that is why baby metal doesn't belong here. BECAUSE ITS NOT METAL. that's really the only thing that irks me. Also Vikings metal is a combination of two genres so it's just easier to call it Viking metal. And death metal got it's name because of the lyrics From the old school bands were about killing stuff like that. Of course now it's different with a wide variety of lyrical content. Black metal is called black metal because the old school bands sang about evil and Satan and so forth. Hence it was deemed black. And that is now different too as lyrical content expanded. I hope you are happy with yourself. You made me type all that out on a freaking phone. ヽ(`Д´)ノ |

offmodel said: I am a fan of metal, and that is it. I hate these sub-categories. I couldn't agree with Lips from Anvil more: Songfacts: Looking back at the '80s, I always find it interesting that some bands tried to stay current, tried to follow the trends a bit. You look at a band like KISS, they suddenly started sounding a bit like BON JOVI and those types of bands. And as far as fashion goes, they were also dressing similar. It's interesting how certain bands did that, and then there are other bands, like I guess you could say MOTÖRHEAD, that did. Lips: That's right. Absolutely. And it put a big divide in it and a big explosion of genres and sub genres. Songfacts: Would you say ANVIL was caught in the middle there between those two? Lips: That's right. Because our first albums had aspects of all of those things. It's just that it all fragmented, and it was no longer cool to have aspects of all different things. It was either you're this or you're that, and it was about labeling and dividing and separating. It went through an era of that. But we survived it all, because we basically and fundamentally stuck to our guns and did it the way we wanted to, how we wanted to do it, when we wanted to do it, and didn't really care about how we were labeled or not labeled. Longevity and history speaks for itself. Songfacts: That's interesting, I've never really thought of it that way. But if I think back to the '80s it seems like that was maybe like suddenly with metal, there were all these different sub genres and categories and things like that. Lips: And look at where it is today, completely fragmented. How do you know what to listen to? What is good? You've got to start asking yourself, "What do I even like anymore?" All the things you did like you don't like anymore. So then what is new to like? A lot of people are asking themselves that. Having said that, there's lots of things to like. It has to do with the listener's preferences and how open-minded you are or how close-minded you are. And that's what it all comes down to. http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/lips-on-anvils-early-days-we-were-trying-to-do-something-that-no-one-else-did-or-tried/ Sub-genre's exist for categorical purposes. Because its obvious we won't just call it metal. Because Heavy metal will not sound at all like Death metal and so forth. So I think sub-genres are necessary if you are looking to find a specific type of sound. In regards to this thread don't take it too seriously. I simply posted this because I though it was funny how he described the genre's through fairy tale scenario's, and wanted to see what most people associated with if they listen to metal. Wittmann said: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJL6_JtrzVU Martial Black Metal If it ain't underground it ain't for me. Not that hard to be underground. Just have lyrics that are extremely controversial. Not one major record label will even touch you. Satanic lyrics won't work these days since it isn't the 1960's. You gotta have anti-Jewish, anti-black, and anti-Muslim lyrics. In any case I found it kind of funny that the band was NSBM from France. Considering history and all. I don't even agree with the political ideologies of the bands but some of them are pretty good within that genre. |

I was also big into stuff like Finntroll and Wolves in the Throne Room back in high school though I haven't listened to them in awhile. Kyzix said: In general, I tend to like a lot of progressive, avant-garde, tech death, etc. Stuff along that vein. I'll just post some favorites: SikTh UnexpecT Follow the White Rabbit Beyond Creation Cyclamen Vildhjarta Hunab Ku Gojira Psykup Dir en Grey I also quite like sludge metal and various other stuff of course as well. I was also big into stuff like Finntroll and Wolves in the Throne Room back in high school though I haven't listened to them in awhile. Also, since it was the first thing that I ever learned how to play on bass, and I also happen to share a birthday with Geezer Butler, I'll post this: Also, this might be of interest. This is 鬱P (Utsu-P), a vocaloid producer who does metal music complete with Hatsune Miku and the gang performing screaming vocals: I like a few of the bands you posted. Sometimes I feel that prog./avant-garde bands can get too carried away and then the albums sometimes become difficult to listen to. I have a love/hate relationship with avant-garde. |

They are all stereotypes, that's why its funny. You do know that in every stereotype there is some truth. Regardless, I like both prog and black. |

Its just different names. Funeral doom isnt there though I consider drone doom stuff like this and drone metal stuff like this. Having different names for basically the same thing is kinda redundant tho. Also most nesbm stuff isn't on Youtube anymore but the best things from it are Battle Lolis and Loli Waffen SS NESBM Also I make stuff here LOLIGRIND (also closely tied to grindcore's punk routes so not all is metal related) Also I make stuff here EDIT: Added loligrind |

Oh wow he used my song as an example. And yeah it's ridiculous but is a real thing since for whatever reason grindcore subgenres are mostly by theme |

[/quote] Yeah that's why it's nintendo entertainment system black metal. The name is a joke on nsbm but also fits since most of it has nazi themes and is a subgenre of both chiptune and black metal. |

Battle Lolis has some solid stuff out there though. Namely 전투는 내 인생이다 and his split with Loli Waffen SS and The Guanosan. |

It sounds like old school video game music or something along those lines. |
