As the title says. I'm just looking for anime that not only have a lot of action but also take place in a world that has lots of history behind it. Thank you ahead of time for going out of your way to help.

This is a new airing series, I think about 8 episodes are out but it's really good but not much history.
Akame Ga Kill
And one with also action and history that has been twisted,
Nobunaga the Fool.

Oda Nobuna no Yabou could be interesting. Its all about the Sengoku period in Japan with a little twist, by which where all the generals are now females instead of males.
Hope this helps.

Both adaptations of novels by anthropologist Uehashi Nahoko take place in detailed fantasy worlds. Seirei no Moribito has a bit more action than Kemono no Sou-ja Erin, but action is not the primary focus of either story.

For a story set in the Sengoku period, I'd recommend Hyouge Mono. It starts some time before Oda Nobunaga's assassination and follows one of Oda's vassals as he navigates his way through the conflicts that follow. Again the focus is less on action and more on politics and scheming.

Junni Kokki is a classic about a girl who is magically transported to another world where she learns her true fate. This show probably has the most action of the ones I've mentioned, though it takes a while for the story to get really rolling. If you stick with it, you'll be richly rewarded.

Seconding Juuni Kokki

Fullmetal Alchemist is a must. Both series have slightly different world building as the worlds are slightly different. I personally prefer the 2003 series, it seems to be about 50-50 among fans from what I've seen.

Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star are both scifi with lots of planets and space outposts and whatnot as part of their world. And they both have good amounts of action, both space combat and hand to hand or with guns, etc. Though the tone of the two series is quite different.

Not anime, but if you haven't seen Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel series Legend of Korra, they're must watches for a request like this.

Seirei no Moribito (Guardian of Sacred Spirit). I haven't finished it yet but from what I've seen, it has quite detailed and deep lore.
