Interesting what your parents like and dislike. Surprised to see someone who doesn't like FMA.

That one short romance scene though.

I don't wanna show the movie to my parents because of that.

The only anime stuff I've shown to my family are some death scenes in Higurashi and some other anime, and some hentai to my little sister.

Yea, they aren't going to watch anime anytime soon.

I showed my dad Cowboy Bebop and Ergo Proxy, and I showed my older brother Mononoke and Psycho Pass.

I mostly wanted to dispel any stereotypes they had about the medium, as their only previous experience with Anime was when me and my older brother, like everyone else, watched DBZ as a kid on Toonami. While they won't go out of their way to watch any series, they now know Anime is not all childish stuff.

IIRC I made her watch this first because she wanted her big bro to find a reference/justification for some random hentai porn she accidently stumbled upon on and it bothered her because she never saw it before, and this because I wanted to troll the everliving shit out of her (pun intended). Possibly something else.

Then she asked why anime seemed so perverted and then I showed her this because I was obsessing over goro stuffs at that age, and...

I'll say that I had quite the opposite problem in 1985, during a period when I found myself unemployed. I hated cartoons. It was my retired father who introduced me to Robotech. It took him two weeks of pestering me to give it a try because it's different. One day I gave in and, well, the rest is history. :)

I enjoy slice of life anime the most now, having left behind the space monsters and cyborg anime. If it takes place in Japan in recent times and has endearing characters, I like it. My wife and her sister are hooked on kimi ni todoke, after I spent $200 on the three sets of blu ray discs. They. Also like Garden of Words and Colorful.

There is no stereotypical anime. There is only the limited perceptions of those who've been exposed to a tiny sliver of mainstream anime.

That's really messed up. Honestly. To show that to a 11-year old, god. I really hope for her she somehow has been able to forget about that, 'cause that sure leaves one hell of a (negative) influence for someone that age.

She seems fine now. TBH she's 15 now and 4 years younger than me but she seems more mature than me the majority of the time.

The real surprise is that she still likes me after all the stuff I did to her when I was younger. Really odd actually cause I used to be a massive douche to her.

i've been familiar with porn since i got internet in 1st grade, saw goatse, and some various gore from snopes in 4th grade, and finished the Offended Challenge in 6th grade or so; can't say it affected me too much, other than the immediate shock value;
and it was the real deal too; can't imagine cartoon violence will leave that much of a lasting impression
when im looking at my cousin, i come to the conclusion that 2000's kids are stronger than we were, due to the popularity of the internet; people are underestimating kids, and overreacting when it comes to stuff like this

Ah, this is a good topic for us younglings.

It's really great to watch shows with anyone, be it your parents, siblings, or friends. If you haven't, show one of your favorites to someone, and maybe make sure it isn't awkwardly sexualized if it's their first time.

It's not like Serial Experiments Lain is something that changes a lot if you have a large knowledge of Japanese animation. I watched Serial Experiments Lain with my mother and she reacted as expected: awe-struck. She appreciated the subtle complexity.

Anime is just animation. Any other medium can express the same stories, just in different ways.

In my experience people who don't watch anime have a much lower tolerance for surreal imagery than those who do. And also, in my personal experience, those who don't have a high tolerance for symbolic or surreal imagery are often chased away by too much of it.

My father actually introduced me to anime many years ago during the first Scifi anime marathon. Roujin Z, Akira, Project Ako, and a few others hooked me into anime.

I just took it and ran with it. I'd get series online from other people, ebay, or conventions. He'd buy those $30 movies at Sunco and Media Play.

For a while there he picked a show he liked and watched it obsessively, like Berserk, Escaflowne, Nadesico, Tenchi, etc. Since he got netflix he'll watch show after show. Then complain when there's no more anime for him to watch.

On the other hand mom hates the stuff. I think the one show she's ever shown interest in was YuYu Hakusho during the retrieve Yukina arc. She really got into that one.

I know our family's obsession turned her off of it. Though I think if I showed her things like Fire Tripper, Grave of the Fireflies, or Hanibei Renmei she'd enjoy them.

Funnygames I'm going to suggest Roujin Z, Scrapped Princess, or Witch Hunter Robin for your mother. Serial Experiments Lain and Bubblegum Crisis 2040 might be other ones you can try.

Hahaha! My mom used to think that, too.

I don't watch a whole lot of anime with my parents, particularly my dad who I don't see very often as he lives far away. What I have shown my mom is Code Geass, Avatar: The Last Airbender (yes, I know it's technically not anime), and the first few episodes of Mushi-shi. She really liked Code Geass and loved Avatar. I'm not sure what she thought of Mushi-shi, as she kept falling asleep while watching it (she works like a dog, so she can be pretty tired in the evenings).

I've watched the first episode (maybe two episodes?) of Fullmetal Alchemist with my dad, and he didn't care much for it. Same with the first three episodes of Avatar. He inadvertently watched the first episode of Cowboy Bebop and liked it. We watched a couple random episodes of Mushi-shi together and he liked that, as well as the first few episodes of Code Geass, which he really liked, I think because of the fact that it was doing an alternate take on history. We also watched Kara no Kyoukai together, but beyond the animation he didn't care much for it. My dad doesn't like fantasy very much at all. With Kara no Kyoukai, he thought the characters were very expressionless, which I can fully understand, especially with the visual aesthetic of that series.

In general I only show my parents things that I think they might like, given what I've shown them before and their reactions to those shows. After all, who wants to watch something they don't care much for?

One reason I have for deciding to start watching some anime with my parents is to get them to realize that it can have substance and is a worthwhile form of entertainment and enjoyment of the video medium. Considering that I love watching anime, and that I've gotten more and more into it over the past several years, I don't want my parents to think of it as only being childish cartoons or animated porn. A lot of people I've come across who only know very vaguely what anime is seem to be unnecessarily dismissive of it (a former guitar teacher called it "Japanimation" somewhat demeaningly), so I guess showing my parents anime is a way for me to at least show some people close to me what it is in its full form, as well as a way to share a very enjoyable activity of mine with them.

My dad used to crack jokes when I'd watch DBZ down stairs as a kid like how they'd sound constipated when powering up. Aside from that they're aware of my enjoyment of it but haven't watched any and I can't imagine ever trying to force it on them which is the only way they'd watch it, it's just not their thing. The idea of parents enjoying anime still seems kinda odd to me though I know it shouldn't, I mean people three times my age or older can enjoy anime!

Both my parents always watch ghibli movies, and love them nearly as much as i do.
I think they both watch FMA (and the movie) and jigoku shoujo and liked it. I've made my parents watch Gintama episodes here and there, and they do like the ones they've watched.

My dad tends to like sports anime, like eyeshield21, one outs, Hajime no Ippo, Major, PoT, slam dunk... and i think he's a closeted shingeki fan. He also really like Monster, and Arakawa under the bridge.
(btw, if your dad like deathnote and similar series, i think he'd like Monster)

My mom doesn't watch much, but i did manage do force her to watch Mononoke (not mononoke hime, just in case) and she surprisingly like it. (my dad didn't)

It's hard to find something that my parents would like... The last 2 things that my mom watched are: SnK OVA and Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou 3/12. My dad didn't watched it.

I know that my dad is looking for something realist and short.

My mother looking for something interesting... She mentioned that she liked Attack on Titan, FullMetal Alchemist and Death note for the most. So it's easier case in here. 1 thing for sure, she don't know much about the japanese culture, so jokes and anime about japan related is not going to interest her, even if it's a comedy. (I think that's the same about my dad)

I do plan to show them both Steins;Gate, since it's Sci-Fi and it has so many real based theories.
