Lordcrab86's Blog

Hey guys lordcrab86 here with my first rant/blog in a LONG time. It’s about something that’s been talked about (on youtube) for a while and I thought I’d give my 2 cents in on the matter: biased anime fans, or those who refuse to buy anime on dvd and stick with fansubs and manga with scanlationsand make up exuses for not doing so. That sort of thing.

I wanna start this off with anime fans that keep to themselves about their hobbies. Most of them do this basically for the fact that if they tell their friends/family/loved ones that they like anime, they might not except you for what you enjoy, Which I find very petty because I for one find it stupid that they’ll turn your back on you over a Japanese cartoon. That and that’s their problem if they refuse to except you over that. I mean if your friends to that to you, then they’re not really your real friends, a real friend would except you for what you are and what you like, same goes for your family and boyfriend/girlfriend. I can understand if your afraid of being excepted over all that, but take it from me, I don’t care what people think and neither should you. Still though I rarely bring up anime in a conversation because the person I talk to will look at me as if I’m speaking in a foreign language like WHAT? So I only bring that up when needed.

Now onto buying dvds. Now most reasons people refuse to buy anime on dvd range from understandable to fucking stupid. One of the dumbest reasons is the English dubbing. i'm not so sure if you guys know, but most anime dvds have DUAL AUDIO TRACKS, meaning you can choose which language you watch the anime in. that aside, There are some reasons why people don’t buy anime is not only most are broke, but also, the pricing. Prices for anime dvds tend to vary like: what stores or websites that price them. Some range from good to pretty ridiculous. Some dvds tend to be expensive mostly apon release like around 50-60 dollars. Regardless though. Funimation and adv films (before they became section 23) started re-releasing their titles again in slimmer packs and cheaper prices. Adv released thinpacks, funi released the virididan versions; hell, media blaster would release their titles 3 times! And the third release would be the cheapest. So because of this you can still buy the dvds you want without breaking the bank. I’ve also heard that some say that anime dvds are more expensive than video games for that I say:

i really don't know what hole these people live under, but it’s the other way around since you can find anime at much cheaper prices.

And now manga scanlations. Most anime fans tend to read manga online, myself including, instead of reading it physically. There’s many reasons why people would do this type of thing: not just involving money but because it’s easier that way. That’s what I think. Think about this, most of the manga I read have never been released state side, not yet at least like yokohama kaidashi kikou, touch, and change 123. But also because the ones that are released here, I can’t find in most stores, that or some volumes are missing. A good example would be blood alone, it’s been released but i can’t seem to find it. I don’t buy manga as much as I do anime, but I occasionally do when I have the chance.

Now downloading. First off, I never download anime, I always watch them streaming but I’ll get to that in a moment. That and I happen to be against downloads and torrents mainly because I refuse to do so and it doesn’t do the anime industry any justice, I’m sorry that’s just how I roll. As for streaming I can openly admit that streams can be a double edge sword, for many many reasons. Some video players can have messy picture quality and can come off as blocky for few like veoh. Then you have those like megavideo that not only has a 72 minute time limit but you have to join and pay to watch all the videos you want, which is why I detest megavideo but digress. Then there’s the buffering, now this I think depends on the internet connection you have mostly as well as the video player itself. Sometimes the buffering will stop and you have to refresh the page so you can watch it again, I do this sometimes but I have a bit of patience for this so yeah. Regardless though I do this because I wanna see if the anime itself is worth my time, if I like what I see I’ll go out and buy the dvd.

I now would like to end the video with this: I buy anime and manga to support both the industry and it’s creators as well as my hobby as an anime fan. I say that just so I can say this: if you really love anime and have several favorites, buy them. Buy them and be happy and stop being a dick.

that's all i have to say, i'm done here

later.

Again Lordcrab, I must ask; are you . . . me!?

The only place I've ever seen anyone slander a person for being a fan of Japanese pop culture was on the Something Awful forums. I personally have never been slandered for liking anime, (I have been slandered for liking animation in general, but the dipshits who insulted me for that can go fuck themselves) and I've never seen anyone in person being made fun of for liking anime.

You forgot another reason why certain fans don't buy official releases; because R1 companies are "evil", and they love to "butcher" otakus' precious animes. By not buying official releases, they're sticking it to the man! Or they're just being a bunch of stupid assholes again, trying to think of another reason to not support the industry they claim to love so much. I'm glad DVDs usually have dual audio, because God knows I wouldn't have bought Rebuild of Eva if it was only in English. (On the flipside, I would never own Trinity Blood if it was Japanese-only.) Also, yeah, video games that aren't downloadable games are WAY more expensive than most anime packages.

Personally, I find it very hard to read scanlated manga. Clicking a web browser to turn the page just isn't the same sensation as holding a real physical book in your hands, turning the pages, et cetera. Not to mention most scanlated manga I've read had shitty image quality, and sometimes questionable translations. I will read a scanlation if I have no other way of reading a manga, but gee, I wonder why a "dumb poser fan" like myself would buy the official manga . . . I wonder.

I, like artist_for_hire, will also watch a downloaded anime if said anime is legally unavailable in my area, but again, I could see why you would prefer a DVD to a video stream.

Man, our thoughts are so similar, I feel like sending you a friend request.

Whoa... Did you copy and paste my thoughts onto yours? LOL joking aside I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said.
Though I'll admitt, I do download anime, but only if it's not licensed by any english companys, and when they are I delete them and wait patiently for the official release.

I totally agree with you with everything you said here. I used to hide the fact that I'm an otaku from people who I know in real life but I'm opened up about it now. Everyone in my family and even my friends know that I'm an otaku and don't hold anything against it. It's my hobby and they're cool with it. There's nothing to be ashamed about being an otaku. And no one is too old to watch anime. I have friends who are in their 30's and still watching anime ;)
