Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos

Chasing a runaway alchemist with strange powers, brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric stumble into the squalid valley of the Milos. The Milosians are an oppressed group that seek to reclaim their holy land from Creta: a militaristic country that forcefully annexed their nation. In the eye of the political storm is a girl named Julia Crichton, who emphatically wishes for the Milos to regain their strength and return to being a nation of peace.

Befriending the girl, Edward and Alphonse find themselves in the midst of a rising resistance that involves the use of the very object they have been seeking all along—the Philosopher's Stone. However, their past experiences with the stone cause them reservation, and the brothers are unwilling to help.

But as they discover the secrets behind Creta's intentions and questionable history, the brothers are drawn into the battle between the rebellious Milos, who desire their liberty, and the Cretan military, who seek absolute power.

I want to write this review right after watching the movie because my experience on YouTube made me realize that people seem to 'hate' the movie...? I haven't watched their opinions and prefer not to let them influence my review. So, here is my honest opinion based on having just finished the movie.


First, and most obvious. The movie is a visual masterpiece:

It is called the "Ghibli FMA" movie for a reason. and it delivers!
Every frame of this can be a wallpaper, and I have spent embarrassingly way too long reversing and replaying the scene frame-by-frame and screenshotting it. In short, the visuals are not ... just 'good'; they embody what is meant by the term 'Art' with a capital letter. Sure, to each their own taste, but if anyone ever complains about the visuals, the animation, the directing, the storyboarding, the technical aspect of the movie that makes it an animated movie, they are Blind. (No offense to blind people)

The story:

Second, I think this is the part that people 'hate' - because it can't be the execution; we already agreed that part is flawless. If you haven't watched the movie yet, treat this as a standalone story. In anime, movies are typically standalone stories, side quests, or detours from the main plot. Therefore, yes, there are some spoilers involving one or two major plot points in the FMA movie for some series. However, if you've never seen FMA the series - Brotherhood or 03- you can still watch the movie, since all the key points needed to understand the basic plot are included in the film; you'll just need to pay a little closer attention to the dialogue.

Third, the movie's plot is complete. has a start, a climax, and an ending with no loose threads. It is a complete experience on its own. A good one, perhaps the story is nothing new if you've been on this side of media for however long, but just because it isn't one-of-a-kind doesn't make it any less good.

Fourth: The Elrics are delegated to the supporting cast and perhaps to the witness role in the story as it unfolds. Which is nothing that detracts from the movie's goodness. On the contrary, it fleshes out the world in which we followed them through in the series, and that is valuable on its own. Therefore, I understand that some viewers hoping for more of Ed and Al being in the spotlight might be disappointed.


All in all:
The movie is very efficient in world-building and providing context for the country through which we follow the Elrics. The visuals are top-notch. The self-contained story of the people of Milos serves as both a quick lesson in empathy for all those facing similar struggles in the real world and a beacon of hope for their future. Therefore, I cannot see how this movie is anything less than a masterpiece.

Mixed Feelings

I'm a bit torn on this. All in all it was a fun movie, but I couldn't help but think that with a little rewriting, this movie could've been completely standalone and wouldn't even have necessarily played in the FMA universe. Ed and Al are there and do their thing, but I can see the movie playing out more or less similarly without them. I'm not saying they were useless, but rather that the movie seemed disconnected from the rest of the story - not like an OVA episode that plays in-universe but disconnected to the main plot, but rather it seemed like the chracters ... where taken completely out of their universe and placed in a different movie script (which kiiiiinda happens on a smaller scale). Mustang, Hawkeye, Winry and Armstrong also show up, but more or less only as a cameo - which did feel rather forced at some points, but helped the story feel more "in universe" and actually connected to the rest of the franchise.

The movie was alright I suppose, but at the same time I didn't really feel like I was watching FMA. The story itself seemed shaky at some parts, too, I'm not sure if it was underexplained or actual plotholes, but parts left me confused and at other parts I could swear that isn't how alchemy worked in this universe before. That being said, I still enjoyed the story. Kind of a 6 1/2 for me.

On the technical side of things the mixing stuck out to me. I'm not sure if this was an issue with my streaming provider, but the fight scenes were super loud while the dialogue was almost inaudible at points - I kept having to rearrange the volume to hear something while not bothering my neighbours.

Also the art seemed surprisingly dated and rushed at some points, considering this released after Brotherhood and had a movie-budget. The original chracters at times looked like they were borrowed from another early 2000s anime. And Ed in particular stuck out to me as not really looking like himself at times, with the proportions being off and his eye colour (while looking really pretty) not matching up with the usual - it seemed more green than golden at times, which was a bit odd, given that his eye colour is even described in the dialogue in Brotherhood. Same thing went for Hawkeye, but that was more forgivable, given that she isn't the literal main character. It kinda had the feel of a fanfiction or new interpretation of the franchise, rather than an entry in the existing interpretation (which from the release date I'd have sorted as playing during Brotherhood).

It felt like a dream
It feels like it happened but in reality there is no such thing
Everything is somehow related and familiar or is it just a feeling? In other words what if I'll wake up and think that all of these are just a crap and a unlogical variations of conditions of my reality
And the people that I know is somewhat robotic and gives synthetic reactions in the opposite they usually give
They can look but felts me that they can not see
But
The animation, and the aesthetic of the universe is good
Basically, it is 5 out of 10 for me just because of it is ... an extension of a beautiful original series and the alive universe
