Without giving too much info and spoiling, both female protagonists are somewhat going through similar circumstances. What is quite interesting is they have the same first name... Yuuko Kanoe and Yuuko Amamiya (ef - A tale of melodies), and similar features (hair/color, body) NOTE: However this recommendation is a SEQUEL so it is suggested to watch the prequel first (ef - A tale of Memories) and understand the story.

Both approach adult conflicts in a very human way (Clannad AF: aftger episode 8). Both are drama + romance + slice of life and both will probably make you cry...XP

Both stories have characters that have a dark past and a protagonist that loses their loved one and meets her again.

I think the feeling while watching was similar, and both have 'other words' and school stuff, so if you like one, you will probably find the other one nice. Epecially, If u like shoujo type anime, drama/school/slice of life.

Both contain a character with painful memories and them dealing with it by avoiding some sort of art, whether its musical or visual. The same mood gets sent whenever both shows start digging into the past and each give hint by hint to what happened.

Both animes are mostly based on romance, although Ef is also mystery while Romeo x Juliet has fantasy.

In both at first it's hard to understand how all these characters and their stories are connected to each other but in the end they all become one big complex story. Also both have a little bit strange fantasy story with romance in it - Mekakucity actors is a lot stranger than Ef and Ef has more romance though! Both stories also leave you with lots of unanswered questions. In both the story still somehow works completely fine. Both are made by Shaft so both have the same typical style. And also both have the same nursery story style in it explaining the original background story. And  read more

-Both have musicians who quit/want to quit playing -Both have a girl who inspires to keep on -Both have ill violinists -Character that has been physically abused by guardian -Both have a character who has to deal with the death of a loved one -Both have exquisite "scenery porn" -Both have characters who must confront past ordeals and move on -Drama/Slice of life/Romance ef: a Tale of Melodies deals with older more adultish characters and is more dark, while Your Lie in April deals with middle schoolers and is more upbeat but still just as dramatic.

Both main female characters (Yuuko Amamiya and Sakura Matou) share similarities in their background, with each series exploring their complicated emotions regarding those events as well as how it affects both of their romances. Both girls also hold a grudge on individuals for their inaction to certain events (Yuu Himura and Rin Tohsaka respectively). Do keep in mind that neither of these entries are the first to watch in their series.

Both are stories that focus on unresolved trauma and how tragedies of the past influence the current generations. I like the fact that none of the characters in either are artificially made to make them likable (or unlikable) but rather that act like humans in front of adversity. Both are also stories of loss and the meaning of true love further than the romantic type of love. Finally, if you love unconventional animation, you'd love how both are directed.

Watch it, you'll love it as some of the characters you think boring are actually not.. Worth giving it a shot though its a bit slow.

They are both love stories that have a bit of dimension to them. One dealing with complex love issues between the main character helping others with their relationships (Sukitte Ii Na Yo) The other dealing with the fact of two main love stories that tie in together at some point (ef: A Tale of Melodies) ef: A Tale of Memories is also a good idea to watch.

If you like the 'realistic calming' and maybe sad ending of Kimi No Na Wa, you'll like EF series too. Also the person who made the story of Kimi is the same as the one who made EF.

Both anime have dark undertones, with Cossette's being more apparent most of the time. While ef is more refined in artwork and storytelling, both are conceptually very well executed, and deal with dualism of relationships past and present.

Same music, similar art. Great twists, nice romance. Just except this is a movie.

A lot of experimental animation and similar usage of artistic elements to convey plot progression.

Both stories are full of romance and pain and are intended for a more mature audience

both series deal with the more serious and painful side of high school romance

Both anime depicts romantic relationship with a seriously ill person, who can literally die at any moment.

Similar style, Ef- a tale of melodies is slightly more artsy while Air is more fantasy, however they both have a very like feel to each other

While ef - a tale of melodies has mainly the love story and the drama genres, Sankarea can't be complete without its zombies. Even though the anime are not similar in terms if the context of their story, I can only point out the likeness of two characters from each of the anime. That is Yuuko (from ef - a tale of melodies/memories) and Rea Sanka (from Sankara). I don't want to spoil any of the details, but let me just hint out that both grew up the same way. Either way, both are excellent anime. Enjoy.
