I just found out that this anime is actually a remake of an anime called Mahou Shoujo Pretty Sammy. I've never seen it, so I can't compare this with the original. This was just as good as season one, or perhaps even slightly better. It's still no masterpiece, but it was a really fun ride. This season goes much more in depth with not only the actual magic, which, as I said before, was hardly used in season 1, but introduces an interesting plot involving prejudice between humans and demons. It's not the most thought provoking I've ever seen, and I did have some basic

issues with its execution, but considering this is a magical girl anime from 2008 it was better than I could have expected it to be. Which is to say, it wasn't complete garbage. It's those few additions that might raise my opinion on the sequel ever so slightly above the first season. The biggest problem is that, like a lot of anime particularly of the time, it doesn't fully commit to its themes. It seemed like the idea was that the witches felt slighted due to discrimination at the hands of humans over the years, but the way Washu Kozuka was acting, still arguably my favorite character by the way, I was thinking that maybe that's a lie or something. Either that or she just felt that it was best to move on from the past. Either way could have been interesting, but neither is fully committed to sadly. I was also confused by the direction that Misao Shinohara's character was taken. She briefly betrayed her friends, and I'm pretty sure the idea is supposed to be because, out of all of the main cast, she was "hurt" by humans the most because of the isolation she previously felt. Even though that arc was already completed in the first season. And even though the final straw was not being noticed by the boy she likes who has a crush on her best friend, Sasami Iwakura, (the main character).
That may seem like a lot of complaints, and it kind of is, but at the same time there is a lot to enjoy here too. Like I said before there's more actual magic and fighting in this season than in the first season, which makes it feel more like a traditional magical girl anime. The animation, while not overwhelmingly amazing, is still better than i would expect from an anime like this. The characters are mostly fun, even if it is missing a lot of the humor that I enjoyed from season 1 it's not completely absent. I wouldn't have minded if this got a third season, although I don't think it was absolutely necessary. I had issues with it, but I don't think there were any major unanswered questions from what I noticed. I'll probably forget about it pretty soon, but it was still fun in the moment, and sometimes that's all you need; just because an anime isn't incredibly unique and endlessly memorable, life changing even, doesn't necessarily mean that it's not a worthwhile experience. In some ways this season reminds me of Pretear, although I'd probably recommend that one over this, (although I haven't seen Pretear in many years). I also like that they told us the difference between witches and magical girls. In season 1 they used the terms interchangeably, but in season 2 they explained that witches are full blooded magic users, but magical girls spawn when a witch has offspring with a normal human. No clue what happens if that baby born is a boy, though.
