City Hunter

So similar are Onizuka (GTO) and Ryo (City Hunter) that I have to assume Fujisawa was inspired by City Hunter when he created GTO. The way the two alternate between perverted idiot mode - always making women fall for them but, for one reason or another, never getting laid - and superhero mode makes it impossible for me to think of one without thinking of the other. Nothing is impossible for them, no matter the circumstances. Boys are inspired to become men after watching their actions, and no woman can resist the duo's manliness for too long--even if they do get slapped a lot, to begin with. ...oh, and it goes without saying that banging school girls is viewed as morally wrong by them, no matter how... hard they find... it. Taking advantage is also a no-no, comedy scenes aside. Real men aim for fully-developed ladies and don't need to get the object of their affections drunk to do the deed. It's impossible to like one without liking the other. City Hunter is entirely episodic and lacks the drama of GTO, but the feel of both series is very, very, VERY similar. read more 

Both have a retro style look and both have stories that begins and ends in the same episode. Protagonists are alike, Ryo Saeba and Spike Spiegel are cool, a little lazy, little comic and use a gun as main weapon. Also, Ryo Saeba are more comic and perverted. 

Attractive, reliable, good boys, Kintarou and Saeba use to be misestimated by girls, just because guys look like rakes. But time after time main characters appear in all themselves glory. One episode – one mission – one girl. 

Both main chars "Vash" and "Ryo" are both really skilled but they avoid showing their skills in "non-critical" situations and acting complementary.=> Vash seems to be really fearful and Ryo doesn't have any interests except "mokkori" women ;-) Both anime are really funny to watch! Big Difference: City Hunter is more episode-based. Trigun more story-telling. 

Episodic action comedy with elements of detective work and lots of girls. 

TV adaptations of Tsukasa Hojo’s most famous manga. Classic 80’s anime with plenty of action and comedy, some romance, and overall similar mood. 

Both of the main characters, Lupin and Ryo, are loveable, goofy perverts who are actually really talented at other things. Ryo is great at handling a gun, while Lupin is great at stealing things. Lupin has more of a cartoony look to it's characters, while the characters in City Hunter look somewhat realistic. Despite the differing art styles, both shows end up having a very similar tone. In both shows, there ends up being many similar action-packed situations, which usually also somehow involve beautiful women, and the main character lusting over them / getting manipulated or tricked by them. 

Both series feature a male protagonist and female sidekick. Ryo Saeba/Kaori Makimura (City Hunter) and Reiji Fujita/Sara Halifa (Gallery Fake) work in different fields of business, but apart from that, they have much in common I think. There is not much overarching story. The protagonist is solving cases, with or without the assistance of the sidekick. The cases stretch for 1-2 episodes. During these, the protagonist gets to display his abilities, which are considered to be top in Japan. If applicable, the sidekick also gets some crumbs of the glory. The sidekick may become jealous in case the male protagonist gets too close to another female. There is often some banter going on between the two. He has a good looking female rival, who is head of a public institution that is also active in the protagonist´s field of business. Sometimes, the protagonist gets help from friends/allies for special tasks, occasionally even the female rival offers assistance. If you want to see a top tier professional in a huge variety of settings, beautiful women and lots of banter/dialogue, both series may be for you. read more 

Both series were made in the same time period and share the same feats: action, drama, manliness and a dose of comedy (City Hunter features more comedy than Hokuto No Ken). Also, Ryo's seiyu is the same as Kenshiro's.  

They both have the same feeling when I watch them. Kogoro Mouri and Ryo Saeba also share the same voice actor in Japanese (Mouri's VA was changed at ep553) and funny enough, both Mouri and Saeba are Pervy funny guys that solve crimes/help people. Tho i gootta say that Ryo is way more competent in his job. B Both anime also are directed by the same person what makes them feel more alike. I gotta admit they don't look much alike at first but if you enjoyed one of them I bet you'd enjoy the other one aswell. 

Despite being totally different genres they have a lot in common. 1- Both shows have a lot of comedy despite having serious plot or moments. 2- The male MC have a female partner and their relationships are pretty similar in both shows. 3- The MCs are a lazy trolls that loves to fool around (tho they do it in different ways) and their partners push them around to do stuff. 4- The "couples" have great chemistry. 5- Both partners of the MCs are kinda tsundere. 6- The supporting cast is interesting and likeable. 7- Character development it's important in both show. 8- Despite their personalities both MCs tend to close their hearts and they play dumb towards the feelings of their partners. 9- Both shows have action scenes.  read more 

It has a very similar theme to Akira, in terms of environmental design and pop culture. 

Both animes are peak 1980s when it comes to artstyle, character design and have an amazing contemporary soundtrack. 

Both are 80s shows that have a monster of the week type format, that occasionally dips into developing their main characters backstories more. Also, both antagonists of the series are people who are part of villainous organizations such as the mob or "connections". 

Both shows can be considered comedies but they have real plots, tho in city hunter is in an episodic format. The MCs have a partner and they have a strong relationship. Both shows have great OPs and EDs. They have a kind of adventure feeling that really makes you want more. The supporting cast it's interesting. Both have a good amount of action scenes. Both MCs are badass af and "too cool for school" XD 

While Gintama and City Hunter don't seem too similar at first glance, theres definately traits the two share that make each series enjoyable. First, both Gintama and City Hunter are action based. While Gintama involves elements of both Fantasy and Science Fiction due to its mixture of Feudal Japan-like Samurai elements and futuristic society, with the addition of aliens. City Hunter is a bit different as it has a more Hard-Boiled, Detective story, kind of setting. On another note, both original Mangas where serialized in Shonen Jump Magazine. Both Animes are paced similarly, as they both revolve around a "Jack of all Trades for Hire" kind of situation. Episodes of each series often feature a "character of the day" kind of plot with each protagonist's various clients and antagonists within each job. There is also a series of long-term plot focuses, such as more important antagonists and significant character development as the series progresses. The protagonist are also very similar, as they are both offering their services and skill for hire. They both come off as comedic characters that don't take much seriously, but can become serious, skilled, and influential at the drop of the hat. In other word, they both obfuscate stupidity very often, and it offers comedic relief for the action-based plots. Both also feature a tough, expressive, and outgoing female character in their main cast that also adds to both the action, and comic relief. While City Hunter is a bit dated, and definately shows in its 80's style and animation, it contains many aspects that make Gintama a very good Anime and definately worth a try if you enjoy it's pacing and large amount of comedy.  read more 

This recommendation is in English and Spanish: ENGLISH: -Both are episodic. - Both are great, dealing with a cool protagonist solving problems or messing up, but never failing in a miserable way. - Both are half perverts (in a good way, as a person who likes oppais or butts), but curiously you will never fall badly, on the contrary they will be quite interesting. ESPAÑOL: -Ambos son episodicos. -Ambos son geniales, tratandose de un protagonista cool resolviendo problemas o metiendo la pata, pero nunca fallando de forma miserable. -Ambos son medio pervertidos (en el buen sentido, como una persona que le gustan las oppais o traseros), pero curiosamente nunca te van a caer mal, al contrario van a ser bastante interesantes. read more 

Episodical show about a sort of detective agency solving issues, though one is real world crime while other is youkai related. Both of the protagonists have leecherous personalities but are powerful when they are needed. 

Ryo and Cobra were more than likely good friends, or maybe even roomates during college. But seriously! These two are both explosively awesome action comedies, with some of the manliest leads you'll ever come across (and both original Japanese voice actors for the two do an incredible job at bringing their characters to life!) Beautiful women are riddled throughout both series and the two men will stop at nothing to get them! Hah! You can certainly expect some serious drama here and there too and both shows do that exceptionally well. These two are classics nonetheless, you must watch them and all their sequels/spinoffs. 

Slightly different genres, but both shows do an amazing job at summing up the awesomeness of the 80's really well. Classic stuff through and through. 

Both main characters are professionals and helping others by completing their requests. City Hunter has more of fan service, women, guns and is a shounen type of anime while Master Keaton is more serious type of anime. Both animes seems to also be episodic. I would say City Hunter is much more enjoyable to watch but it does not hurt to watch them both. 

Both represent a sort of 'golden age' for 80's anime. The storytelling are both told in an episodic manner, and both have very memorable soundtracks, characters, influence and designs. CH is more for the action fan, or someone who's into the masculine male lead who humps(or wants to hump) anything attractive that he see's. While UY is more of a comical(sometimes even dark) depiction and satire of Japanese culture in general. Both main male leads are inhumanly perverted, both main female leads beat them/electrocute them to put them in their place(But not for long!). 

They both involve main characters who use to be assassins. They then decide to become sweepers due to some woman showing them the right path. Though each story seems to have a different plot, the main characters try to take on jobs that help people. 

The plots maybe very different and City Hunter may not have any fantasy within it, but what makes these two animes similiar is the characters and comedy. The relationship between Ryo and Kaori is exactly the same between Carrot and Chocolate/Tira. The guys are always trying to do perverted things with girls while the main female characters stop them in various ways. If your looking for this type of character cohesion and similar comedy; then these two animes are what you are looking for. 

Both anime have action scenes combined with humor, and both also have similar art and animation styles. I would even say some of the characters seemed pretty similar, even though they're not all totally alike. I suppose I would say City Hunter has a bit more comedy in it than Art of Fighting, though. 

Episodical shows about a protagonist who is a goofy pervert but very capable when push comes to shove. While the plot is connected to criminal underground in both cases, the protagonists usually stand on opposing sides of the law. 

Art work is very similar. The character manners are no different than other except that in city hunter the protagonist is always being obstructed to his true desires. but in the end they both got what they wanted. Both very funny, hilarious, yet very epic.  

Both of them have a gun-shooting, badass main character, and they love women, a lot. The difference is their personalities, Golgo 13 (Duke Togo) is a stoic man with pretty much no human emotions, who is always serious, while Ryo Saeba is a fun, outgoing man who knows when to play and when to be serious.  

Watching Goku II: Midnight Eye, many things about it reminded me of City Hunter, despite being a somewhat different thing overall. The setting in Midnight Eye, while futuristic, still consists of a private detective traveling to the docks to meet a client, who is coincidentally a beautiful woman. The action scenes are also very similar to the action in City Hunter, espcially in how they are directed. Goku and Saeba, while not constantly the same, seem similar in some spots. Saeba is typically silly and serves as comic relief. However, there are many moments when Saeba gets serious, and it's those moments I was reminded of while watching Goku's character on screen. Character design as well as art design is pretty similar as well, although I feel like Goku II trumps City Hunter's animation, which makes sense since it is an OVA. Anyway, they are very similar and I feel if you like one you will most likely enjoy the other as well. read more
