I have a few friends who I talk about op with a lot, but they haven't seen it. They're not hardcore anime fans, and don't have the commitment to watch all of one piece. Would this be a fine movie for them to watch with me if they're interested in the series?

I would say it’s ok, but only if you tell them to start the show from the beginning afterwards. Episode of East blue is basically a “greatest hits” of the East Blue saga and cuts out very important and crucial parts to the plot. So yes it’s ok with friend

It's pretty much only to show them what the show is about. They wouldn't be starting the show after Arlong or anything if they start watching.

Absolutely. It roughly covers everything that happens before reverse mountain and the Laboon mini-arc.
