Relaxing yet unsettling yet calming yet somewhat creepy yet beautiful. That's what I feel after watching the first episode. Guess there's no need to rush it. In-fact, that's the message it gives, at least to me. "Life is something you should enjoy slowly, there's no need to rush.' And I am very grateful for that. Aria-level atmosphere, and I would even compare it to Shin Sekai Yori's too; in terms of greatness.

Was a great story, with the cup. Mushishi and it's best mini stories. A great start to this series tbh.

This is such a chill, relaxing anime to watch. Also, it's beautiful.

I have a huge voice crush on Travis Willingham, so I've chosen to watch the dubbed version on this.

For those of you that have seen both dub/sub, what are your thoughts on both?

This episode was actually pretty relaxing to watch! (gives me a break from all the action, gore, and sports anime lmao.) I really enjoyed this episode and I'm looking forward to the rest of this anime :)

I didn't think this was a strong opening to such a masterpiece, but it was decent!

One question:

Later on in the anime Ginko says something along the lines of how humans who turn into mushi gradually lose their humanity and ties to human world. So does this mean the granny, upon drinking the celebratory sake, will gradually stop caring for her god-like grandson? I really hope that isn't the case!!!

The anime comes off as having a slightly different tone than the manga, but that also is natural of adaptations and my perception could just be a bit different. I love how calm the story is, and Ginko is an excellent main character. He brings with him an expertise that the other characters come to respect. This episode started off the series well. I think this will be as enjoyable to me as the manga was before.

I think this episode is much more enjoyable during a rewatch since you already know a lot about the Mushi. Can't wait to see the others once again :)

Ooouuuu, noice! I like serene animes like this. It's very "my pace" but relaxing. This is like Natsume Yuujinchou C: I can already see why Mushishi has such high ratings.

Still relevant. One of the best episodes of anime ever. Fourth time watching it and I still tear up as the credits begin rolling. The closing line still hits me like a brick.

A cute little story to start off with, and Ginko is a pleasant surprise. He doesn't sound like an anime character, if that makes sense. Lush scenery and the characters look gorgeous; it has aged excellently. Also, Ghibli vibes.

i guess it's about time i start this anime, i've been keeping it off

a nice first episode, really good art considering it's from 2005

one thing is that Ginko's character is much different from what i thought he would be like, he's actually quite mischievous. so far i like him a lot

Wow! With this, I have already seen this series of anime three times, but the sensations I feel are the same ones I felt the first time: melancholy, sympathy, fun and interest in history. I think that no anime is like this, even if it is very reminiscent of the anime series Natsume`s Book of Friends.

Ah, so this is Mushishi. I'm surprised to see comedic bits sprinkled throughout, but I suppose without comedy, the show itself would be quite dreary. The rustic aesthetic mixed with the supernatural twists make for a mysterious blend of slice of life-ish adventuring, and I can see how this show would eventually become a multi-season series. There are a lot of possibilities with this setup, and I'm glad I could finally start on this monument of a show. I have huge expectations for it, particularly due to it being likened to Kino's Journey, Aria the Animation, and Haibane Renmei in its recommendations. Hopefully after nearly a decade of stalling, I've curbed those expectations enough to enjoy Mushishi for itself.

This is a very breathtakingly gorgeous, contemplative, yet slightly haunting show judging from this first episode. I especially liked the flashback with the grandmother as a child when she was with the mushi that looked like bedsheet ghosts and was introduced to the light from which she drank. I also like the interactions with Ginko and the boy. I also nearly shed tears at the end.

Watching this is a great experience.

This anime is a bit bland. It doesn't have a story or much happening in it. The fantasy elements are interesting but I just want more action.

I don't approve of 12 year old kids drinking sake.
Numbuh 3, you've got to get off the couch, you cannot sit in that tree house, girl you like Rainbow Monkeys so grab your little shit and then swing!

Hand tracks be tracking me to different doorways. In a maze, and I don't know what to do. Guaranteed though, Ima find the emeralds.

When I hear of Mushishi, the words "chill" and "relaxing" always come to mind and they were right! The situations might be supernatural but this one's got a really tranquil charm to it and it also did a great job of showing its emotional aspects. I didn't expect Gin to be the assertive type of guy but that makes things a lot more interesting. I wonder how big his collection will be by the end of his journey.

This little kid lives in the mountains, can make and drink sake all he wants, has the ability to create beings just by drawing them, and now he has his loli grandmother as his spirit guardian. That's pretty cool~

So I guess the Mushi were trying to stop the grandson from being born? Like if she finished the sake she just woulda become a spirit, with no physical body. Dunno why the boy having that life-creating power was so bad, but whatevs.

I found the first episode rather boring, yet I still, in fact, am curious about their world, these "Mushi" aberrations are intriguing. Decent first episode.

I've never really felt the desire to describe an anime as art, save maybe 3-gatsu no Lion. However, this first episode of Mushishi truly was a work of art. It felt like a painting, slowly across my monitor for 24 minutes. It was truly a beautiful experience to behold. These "Mushi" were introduced brilliantly. We were given enough information to know generally what was going on but not enough to have to think about it too deeply. As most people are describing it, this just felt like animated meditation. I wanted to break free from my typical method of anime discussions where I generally just recap to praise this first episode. It may not end up being my sort of thing, but I can already tell this will be a very unique experience.
