Magi isn't a perfect clone of every other shounen series, but it isn't as new and different as I would like either. By the end of this first run, I was getting tired of some things that kind of settle into the standard mold. That said, it is still much better than the average. Magi has many characters, but weaves them into its story in ways that do not feel cumbersome (like so many recent space opera anime...).

other good stuff:
fun

generally upbeat

doesn't always do the hero saving people without killing anyone thing.

has reasons for doing the hero saving people without killing anyone thing, which makes it not awful to watch

other bad stuff:
often spills into the realm of melodrama, includes many scenes of guys crying

does the thoroughly hackneyed hero saving people (often from themselves) without killing anyone thing. That was getting old ten years ago.

attitude toward slavery makes no sense. It isn't a huge problem, but it can take you out of the story. If you don't know what I am talking about, it is highly unlikely that it would do any good to explain it to you. I will go as far as saying that you may want to consider the difference between the meanings of slave and servant in ancient times, and how that situation relates to the world of the story.

fanged snake that "doesn't look poisonous". Did I mention that this line comes after pulling its fangs out of someone's arm? (seriously, I laughed out loud)

I wasn't really looking for this stuff (or even watching the show all at once), but I did notice a spot where a character knew something he shouldn't have known without reading the script.

lengths of blades seem to change based on whatever was convenient for drawing at the time
