I won't enter in much details, I'll only say that the story is invented, they're not adapt nothing of the novel, well, a bit maybe, but the whooooooooole anime of ZnT can be described in one word: Fanservice. Yeah, Fanservice, that and an invented story, and invented personality for the characters (Saito is my favourite main character! And in the anime he's just a fool boy! In the light novel he's a boy who fights for what he cares about, and have an adult mentality, in the anime he's just a fool teenager who loves to be surrounded by girls, how pathetic)
I will only say you one thing, if you're interested in the plot of Zero no Tsukaima: Read the novels, you can find them easily in baka-tsuki or in nyaa torrent, no worries, they're translated into english so you can read it without problems. J.C Staff it's an unique studio yes, all the good works that they touch are inevitably turned into pure shit.

To finish the review I'll say that Zero no Tsukaima is my favourte light novel and my favourite "otaku thing" to somehow call it, and yeah, i think that Yamaguchi Nobura is the people most closely to God for me XD. They are really good and if you had watch the Zero no tsukaima's "anime" and was deceived for his plot, don't worry, it's completely different of the light novels so read it anyway.
