“Durarara!!” is a little hard to rate. It's a very good anime, but it's also very strange and confusing. You have to be patient in the first episodes so you can understand the plot later.

The story is very original and contains some of the most unique and fun characters I ever saw in an anime: Shizuo, a suppa strong blond guy that gets angry easily (sounds common, but it isn’t); Simon, a black Russian who sells sushi; Izaya, a detestable manipulator; Shinra, a doctor who works illegally to criminals; Mika, a girl who does anything (anything!!) for her love and... Celty, a headless motorcycle rider (?!). Her name is a reference to the Celtics (not the team, the people), because of the Celt legend about a headless knight.

The construction of the personalities of the characters is great, although they could develop some of them (namely Shizuo and Simon) a little – or much – more, because we see only the main personality, but not all their thoughts, feelings and wishes, as with the main characters. I think Simon deserves more importance than he got in the whole plot.

The story doesn't have exactly one main character. It is about the city of Ikebukuro, where anything can happen. The anime starts focusing on Ryuugamine Mikado, a boy who comes from the countryside to this big city. However, with the story development the focus gets constantly changed between Mikado and his friends and two or three other main characters, as well as some secondary ones.

The plot has many intelligent twists you could NEVER imagine, and the main characters, who looked normal and unimportant compared to some side characters, will prove themselves much more important to the story than they look like.

The art is clean and beautiful, I liked it a lot. Pretty dark sometimes though, but that’s how it should be to fit in the story.

About the sound… I loved all the songs in the anime, specially the two opening themes. However, some serious parts of the plot, which asked for serious and calm type of music, were (for me) affected because of the background music, that was, let’s say… a little more flamboyant than necessary.

What I mean is that I thought the music sometimes doesn’t fit well in the situation in which it is placed. However, the voices of the characters are great, especially Shizuo’s (the strong blond guy). Shizuo screaming “IZAYAAAAA!!!” before chasing him and throwing stuff on him is one of the most enjoyable things to hear in the anime.

In the end, “Durarara!!”, although it’s confusing and a little slow in the start, is definitely worth watching. It’s fun, intelligent and passes a kind of message. More or less like “Live in peace, do good things, life is still worth living”. Something between “Live long and prosper” and “Don’t Try Suicide”. Well, watch it!
