School Days is a pretty hard anime to review. I'm sure that if you've heard anything about it, you would know that this isn't a regular slice-of-life anime. It is a bit more "edgy". Perhaps that is the only way to describe it.

PROS

This series drools in character development. Some of the best character development I've ever seen comes from this show. All the characters grow and change throughout the series. There will be times when you think a character is good and other times when you see them as bad. It's really interesting stuff if you're into great character development. By the end of the series, I didn't know who to root for.

Going hand in hand with the character development is the story. It is VERY hard to describe the greatness of the story without spoiling anything, so the best I can do is this. Don't read anything about the story. Watch it with an open mind. Don't read any summaries or plot outlines about School Days. Do this, and you will go in for a roller coaster of a ride. There are so many twists and turns that it is impossible to not be amused.

The art style for this anime is pretty good. It is above average, which is more than enough to satisfy anime freaks who love great visuals. It gets the job done. I feel like the characters are done good, but the settings are amazing (visual-wise). I was happy with this.

CONS

Earlier I said that I didn't know who to root for by the end of the series. Well, there is a reason for that. Yes, this anime has great character development, but with that comes a realization - there are no likeable characters. Sure, some characters are more likeable than others, but you don't really have a "hero" or "villain" appear. This was a problem for me at first, but I got used to it as the series goes along. I can't quite say why the characters are unlikeable because that would spoil certain events that come up later on in the series, yet, it's sadly true. If you are someone who wants to watch a series with a character you care about, this is the wrong place.

Coming with the unlikeable characters is the stupidity of them as well. Although this occurs mainly with the main character, a lot of others in School Days are just plain dumb. The choices made by those, such as the main character, are so stupid and illogical at times that it really makes you want to slap him. The main character, in particular, is basically an idiot. By idiot, I don't mean he has a mental disorder, but rather that he just makes the worst decisions imaginable throughout the series. It's so hard to root for him, although I tried the first few episodes, but after awhile, I got sick of him and decided to root for a different character instead. I know many anime lovers out there like anime shows with a likeable main character, which is why I really thought it was necessary to put this in my review.

OVERALL

School Days is a show that is rich in character development, although many of them are unlikeable. The story is unpredictable and is a good indication of how more anime dramas should go. It is not your regular anime, so try to have an open mind about it before checking it out. I would say it is a must see for those looking for a new and unique experience in the anime world. There is nothing quite like it.
