Beck (Anime) add (All reviews)
Aug 6, 2008
BECK is one of the best anime I've seen like ever. At first I didnt know what to expect at all like the intro sequence is all fast moving with a cool chorus that just sticks in your head while the show itself starts off pretty slow.

So what's BECK about you ask? Well have you ever felt like your life is going nowhere and everything is just the mundane and nothing's changed? Well Koyuki feels the same. That is until he runs into an odd looking dog named Beck and it's owner a 17 year old named Ryusuke who's a guitarist for a band called Serial Mama.

As the show moves on Koyuki joins a band named BECK (named after the dog) started by Ryusuke with Taira (Bass) and Chiba (Vocals) and later Saku (Drums) and how they try to deal with their musical aspirations while living their lives. Another story which is intertwined into the progression of the series is Koyuki's ongoing and building relationship with Maho, who is Ryusuke's younger sister and his troubles with a school bully (who also plays the guitar).

Anyway one of the best reasons to watch the show is the constant references to real bands past and previous (though they do occasionally slightly alter the names) like Nirvana (watch the credit sequence) and The Beatles (The Deatles?). Than there's the music. What can I say it's pretty cool and I love the way everything just meshes together. Just watch the Greatful Sound concert sequence for a totally different yet cool take on The Beatles.

The animation is by MADHOUSE who also worked on Gungrave and Final Fantasy: Final Order. For most of the show the animation isn't anything amazing though I wouldn't call it bad either. The show does have its moments, especially when BECK's on stage and the way the animation is synced with the music, it just gets to you.

So would I recommend this show? Yes I highly recommend... No I order you to watch this show if you have any interest in anime or even music. Truly one of the best, most unique anime I've ever seen.
