The characters are not complex, but they do not need to be. They are a boy and a girl in love, separated by that which makes relations at once more intimate and more mundane: the ability to touch one another.
The detail and sheer scale and scope of the landscapes contrast with the simplicity of the animation of the humans and youkai who people the world of Gin and Hotaru. Theirs is a beautiful simplicity of soft, gentle eyes and hands that serves its purpose well in conveying the poignance of this film.
